Saturday last. She made a sort of ropt, of

the iron bars in her cell, but her eouiiition

some of the inmates before life was extinct.
The application of restoratives soon brought
her round agiin, and, strange to say, from
that moment all traces of insanity seem to

but more generally form abase of operations
for the angler's art. On what is known as
Griffith's dam is to be seen a sort of a mon

not a new cruft. On the contrary, it was

There are, those who claim that it could be

sad cas of Mrs. Jos-ph . tartz, who had tor
a considerable t i nt- b -ti im arcer.ite 1 ; r. -:t r
county jail on th ch;;rge of assault and bat
tery, with nrestiued lnsavity Pstiie cause of
her conduct. Her loud t..'tk, her violent be
havior, and the perstj.fej'ey with which she
adhered to the story that she had been roll- j
iied of her children, had enlisted for berjibe
attention and sympaihv of the public. In
some of her ever-varying moods she told a
distressing story of desertion on the part of
her husband, with poverty following iu the
wake, ami her children being scattered i
amongst the neighttors. She saitl that she
had ben foully wronged by those w ho bad
placed her inside the cells of a prison, and
that, after awhile, the corrupt motives of
her persecutors would lie made manifest.
So far as the desertion of Ler husband is con
cerned, as well as in some minor particulars
of her story, she is corroltorateil by trust
worthy witnesses, but it is as yet too early
to say that she should not have been put un
der restraint. For a time she ami her three
or four babes were inmates of tlie Poor
House. Subsequently the children were ta
ken charge of by her husband's relatives,
an.l, in an effort to repossess hciself of her
own onspring, she committed the assault j
for which she. was committed to jail. Iu j
the estimation ot many, tender treatment
iustead of usage so harsh would more fully
have met the requirements of the case. At
any rate, as she herself frequently saitl, she
was no common character to be cooped up
in the company of a gang of desperadoes.
Mrs. Martz's maiden name was McGough,
ami on Friday of last week a brother and
sister of her's appeared before Ksqutre Kin
keatl, aud, as required by the nature of the
information in the case, entered bail iu a
nominal sum for her appearance at the
next term of Court. She was thereupon set
at lilrty, an.l is :ow in all probability at
her former home. Her future career will
lie followed with interest by many conver
sant with the history here narrated. Jos.
Martz, the husband, has failed as yet to
identify himself with the misfortunes of his
wife, though, so late as six we-ks ago, he
was seen at Gallitzin, ibis county.
