Among the flying representatives
of the monkey race the largest and
K-st known is the flying Lemnr, also
called the Colugo, or Cat .Monkey. J
'I here are several genera ;f the family, j
ranging from the size of a rat to that
of a cat, all inhabitants of the East
Indian Archipelago. The body is sur
rounded ly a hairy lateral membrane,
extending from the side of the neck to
the base ol the feet, embracing the ;
wrists, continued between the legs and i
inclosing the tail, as in many bats, j
neu exieii'ien una serves as a para-
finite to s ir,tain the animal in its as-
touting leap, often of 100 y:."ds,
from live to tree. When traveling.

genera and a multitude of species.
Their common characteristic consists
in their being provided with wing like
meinbi anes extending along the flanks
between tlie anterior and posterior
l:m!s. These meinbi ances are covered
ith hair, like the other parts of the
body, and constitute, when outspread,
veritable parachutes, which enable
tiiern to sustain themselves in mid air
longer than the commonality of
animals, and to clear from 50 to 100
yards at a single bound. Of them
the Tagttin is the best known species.
AVhen the creature wants to take one
of its marvelous leaps it stretches its
four limbs to their fullest extent and
is up-borne through the air on the
i i i t
luraenuie-iiKe expansion which ex-
tends along its sides Its total length
is neauy mice leei, me tail measuring ;
about one foot eight inches. The
color of the animal is a clear chestnut,
dtcpeniiig into brown on the back, and
becoming more ruddy at the sides.
The little pointed ears are covered with
short, soft fur of a delicate brown :
tlii tail is heavily clad with bushy,
yrayir.li black -hair-s. The paraehuto
like membrane is delicately thin, and
covered with long fur, chestnut on the
upper side and beautiful silvery gray
ish white on the lower. The Taguan
belongs to the genus I'teromys, whose
members :ue much larger than thoe
of tlin other two genera and inhabit
Southeastern Asia and the Indian
Archipelago. The Sciuropturus are the
smallest ol the family. They inhabit
the northern parts of the globe, in
clding 0111 own country ; and intei
mediate in size are the Anomalures,
dwelling on the west coast of Africa.
K ef.pino Rats from Harness.
Almost every person who uses a har

having it injured by rats. We gave

ntfects to know, what is best. The
recipes here given are collected from
ditlerent souiees : Take about a tea
spoonful of Cayenne pepper, mix it
thoroughly with a quart of oil, and
rub the harness with the mixture.
That, it is claimed, will not only
prevent rats and mice from gnawing
the harness, but it will also prevent
horses and colls from chewing the
lines or halters. Take two quarts of
green leeks, pour over them one gallon
of oil, and let it stand a few days be
fore using; the longer- it stands the
letter. A little lienzine rubbed over
the harness after it has been oiled is
said to be a sure preventative, but it
is not recommended by many, on ac
count of the idea that it injures the
leather, One ounce of aloes to one
gallon of oil will prevent rats fiom
destroying the harness. It 'is also
claimed that by mixing a small quanti
ty, say a tablespoonful, of pine tar to
one quart of oil, harness will be most
il'vctually protected from any injury ;
but if too M.uch is put on, the leather
will not absorb it. It will collect dirt,
besides making tin: harness unpleasant
to handle. l-'ireiyn Ej-vhunjc.

Dr. Chrichton, Medical Superin
tendent of tLeCrichton Royal Institu
tion, contributes the following orni
thological anecdote, which is published
by Xalcre :
"Two or three years asro," lie states, "in
accordance with our priueiple of encourag
ing 1'irils to become lifiiiztMi.s of the groamls,
we put up a few boxes for starlings. One of
these was phiceil on tlie wi mlo w-still of the
writer's bcil-rooni. Two years ago one of
lhe.se binls took possession of the. aforesaid
box. Kvery morning, for about two or tliree
hours, he perched himself on an iron rail
ing, erected to protect (lowers, within two
feet of the window, and there executed a
comic medley with all the precision and
eti'ect of a finished, artiste. The attention of
Ihe writer w;is first called to the extraordi
nary performance by having his window
surrounded by what appeared to be a general
assemblage of the whole tribe of Aves, wild
and tame. The. quacking of the duck, the
screech of the lapwing, and the notes of the
moorland plover, and many o'.hers, were
imitated with a precision worthy of Mituos
himself, tie failed, however, to secure a
mate tor that year. Last year he was more
successful. lie revisited in spring his for
mer collage, and brought a mate with him.
The usual family arrangements were made
with Ihe greatest care and despatch, when,
in tine time, a brood of young linguists mado
their appearance. During the hatching
seas .n our linguistic friend, every morning
at dawn, resumed his perch within three
feet of my bed-room window, an-l for two or
three hours he repeated his extraordinary
performance. The birds imitated always
with the greatest precision are the hen,
duck, goose, lapwing, plover, heron ami
gull. The song or whistle of many small
birds is also imitated. The only human
note imitated is the whistle of the boy.
This is frequently heard. It always begins
on the same pitch, and pp.sses downward
throuph a major third, forming a beautiful
musical curve. He is gradually adding to
his vocabulary, During twelve months Le
has certainly added the cry of the heron,
t he gabble of the goose, aud the cackle of the
hen'
Mr. IT. O. Forbes sends the follow
ing instance :
''In the grounds of a friend in the neigh
borhood of London, a colony of starlings
had for many years built their nests in the
trees, in boxes placed hre and there for
their accommodation. Tlie children of the
house all quite young then, a few years
ago at whose presence the birds showed
not the slightest, alarm, constantly playing
about close to the nests, and of course con-
; staiitlv calling each other by fame. There
j was only one girl in the family, called
i Maggie ; and she was a great pet, perhaps
Kber name was oflener mentioned than the
others. I!e that as it may, her father was
greatly astonished at hearing his daughter's
name pronounced in exact imitation of the
voice of one of her brothers, who he knew
could not hi near. For a moment he was
puzzled ; but close at hand, on the bough
of an acacia tree, he detected the morkiiig
biril a common starling in the act of i!e
ception, which he continued to practice
often afterwards.
