2o Suppress Running Weed.
A gentleman whose door-yard had
become infected with the running
plant commonly, known as "money
wort." an I to ho nnists as Lyeimaehia
nummularia, remarked to us : "I
would gladly give two hundred dollar3
to be rid of that weed, for it is driving
the grass from fhe lawn, and I cannot
kill it: Hoeing it up only increases
the growth."
Another owner of a handsome resi
dence said that one of the worst weeds
lie met with was the Vinea minor, or
periwinkle, often called myrtle, which
gradually spread over his grounds
without his being able to check it.
These arc botli running plants, which
root freely from their prostrates stems,
and thus the whole surface is gradually
covered by them to the exclusion ot
erass anil evervthinrr else. The own
ers have asked us for a remedy, and
we propose therefore to give a few j
general and particular directions, ap- j
plicable to these and all other weeds
of a similar character.
All plants are killed if excluded dur
ing their growing season from air aid
litilit. With nearly all, a few months
are sufficient If kept constantly bur
ied they are ell'ectually destroyed in
cue season. JJut most people do the
work at the halves; they are kept well
u.uier mo-t of the time, but occasion
ally allowed to peep above ground,
take breath, and start off again with
vigor. A very few small leaves are
euUicicnt to send new life down through
all the roots. This was the reason the
gentleman above mentioned did not
kill dispatch of money wort by hoeing.
This is the reason that so many fail in
attempting to destioy patches of Cana
da thistle.snapdragon and quack grass.
The plants are allowed repeatedly to
recover what they have lost. Canada
thistles turned under deeply with the
plow, by the 1st of June or sooner,
and afterwards often enough to prevent
a single green point from coining to
the surface, will be forever and effectu
ally killed by the 1st, of October, as
we have satisfactory proved on more
than one occasion. We have seen
farmers attempt the same treatment
on quack grass, but they entirley
tailed for want of thorough work.
Hut those who have taken hold of this
weed and kept it always under have
succeeded without difficulty of which
some interesting instances might be
tit A.
Uut in established lawns and door
yards the plow and harrow cannot be
introduced. Tlu work must be done
by hand. The owner ot a lawn wishes
advice how to treat a patch of an in
veterate i uuuing weed which has taken
possession of a portion of his hand
some grounds. Probably the easiest
way would be to trench under the
whole, so as to throw all the plants
with every portion of their roots, deep
ly under tlie soil, and then turf the
surface. It willed course be absolute
ly necessary not to allow a single Irag
ruent of the weed to escape, or else the
trouble will soon be as bad as ever. If
t e roots run too det p to be thorough
ly tieated in this way, a few inches of
the surface may be removed and carted
to some place where no harm can be
done, and then the whole surface ef
fectually cov r.d with tarred felt,
such as builders use. The tar will
prevent the weed from pushing thro'.'gh.
Then over this a coat of earth and a.
covering of turf may be laid, it may
be that roine kind of coarse paper or
pasteboard, not tarred, might be used
m sufficient layers to exclude the pass
age of the plants, and to rot by the
Second year and prevent the drouth
which would occur with an impervious
stratum a few inches below the sui face.
In the early part of the present cen
tury, when the Canada thistle was
spreading into some of the states where
it was unknown before, it excited
great alarm, and laud-owners very
properly attempted to extirpate it be
fore it obtained large possession of
their farms. Thcv began by dig'Mijf

and the estilt was failure. It would
have 1k.ch immeasurably easier, and at
the same time ttlectual, if the weed
had been S'notliered at the surface.
Flowing under is better than a tempt
ing tooestroy them with the hoe, be
cause when turned in deeply, some
weeks are retpiired to reach the sur
face, and if the plowing- is repented in
time, they are kept continually smoth
ered. With the hoe, the suiiace only
is reached, and the plant cut otr to day
uihv be again above ground to-morrow,
and no progress at all made in killing
them. We have never found any dif
ficulty in destioying completely in
ne season, at a moderate cost, any
pafclies or whole fields ol these or
oilier running weeds, provided the
"work was thoroughly performed.

tnretl man or woman, it m:;kesno di tierence
in wliat j'art of the body tlie rupture is situ
ated, to tend me a three cent postage stamp,
ami 1 will tell them wbat tliey should do
and liow to get lehet or a cure. I have a
plied trusses and treated rupture for a period
of over forty years, and have no doubt what
ever that I can give relief in every case ami
when a cure is possible I can effect a cure.
If those afflicted ca.i make it suit to come
nd see me it. is always, best, Invi if they can
not lo tins conveniently they should write
to me. Tlie fault in most cases of rupture is
in improperly applied trusses. Every day"s
experience makes I his more plain to tne, and
I am sure that my experience justifies me in
promising better terms ami a more complete
retention of the rupture than can be obtained
anywhere else in the United States. Visits
at a distance made when required. Address.
