M r. Timothy Slieehan, of Allegheny
township, prides himself ou having raised
four and a half bushels of potatoes last year
from two seed weighing one pound and a
half. The potatoes are of a new variety,

can lay claim to a better yield from so small
an Investment we will be glad to bear from

Constable Wherley says l:enever un

A man named Sweeny was shot nt bnt
fortunately missed tin Monday evening last,
at Fast Cotiemaugh. but whether David
Farner or Wm. (ionghnonr did the shooting
is not definitely known, though Farner wa
subsequently prosecuted by Sweeny for as
sault ami battery wilh intent to kill. The
shooting is said to have been in retaliation
for alleged defamatory remarks made by
Sweeny about Farner and some young lady
to whom he is paying attention.
It was the unfortunate lot of Tiobert
J,ott, of Huntingdon to cast his lot for a
sho rt time among a lot of Pittsburgh thieves,
to which city he repaired a few days ago
with a lot of money, amounting in all to
about .2o0, in his pocket, ami from whence
he returned to Altoona to find himself minus
of every Tent, the thieves aforesaid going
through' him verv effectually and then bnying
a ticket, for the latter place and sending him
on bis way oblivions if not. rejoicing.

W. A. Tl. Little, Kq., of Allegheny
township, who had Thought of being a can
didate for Kecister and Recorder before the
coming county convention, but. who for want
of time and other circumstances found it
impossible to give the matter the necessary
attention, has requested us to withdraw his
name from the canvass, whie), we do with
the firm, conviction that if he had gone
through the "Hint mill" and came out suc
cessful the office would have secured an In
cumbent in every way fitted for tire duties.
We are under obligations to Mr John
F. Smnll. Resident Clerk of the House at
Harrlsburg, for a pamphlet containing a list
of the acts passed at the last session of the
Legislature. They amount to 2GS, r.lwiut
one-half of which had Iteen approved by the
Governor up to the sixth of this month.
Kstimating the expenses of the session at
seven hundred thousand dollars, each of
these acts cost the taxpayers of the State
over two thousand rive hundred dollars,
which is paying pretty dearly for the legis
lative whistle.

Francis Joseph, Emperor Jof Austria, was

ing np his chances for legislative honors.
