a rxa tzfel ertst.. Andrian Jeftichjevthe Hairy Man. A rprrrfirtfiVilj inntincp nf f lip Ir.nns. f mission of anomalous tharacteristics , is (omul in the case of Andrian Jef- tichjew, who three or four years ago j was exhibited with hi- eon, Fed or Jeftichjew, in Berlin and Fans. They 1 were called in Paris leg homme chine, r dog men, the father's face being so covered with hair as to present a strik ing resemblance to the face of a Skye trrricr " Anririnn wns thus npsnilied: . , . .. - Jle 13 aUOllt nity-live years Of age and is said to be the son of a llussian toldier. In order to escape the deri sion and the unkind nsogeof his fellow . villagers Andrian in early life fled to j the woods, where, for some time, be ! lived in a cave. During this period ; of seclusion lie was much given to drunkenness. Jlis mental condition does net seem to have suffered, how- j ever, and he is on the whole of a kind- j ly and affectionate disposition. It; may be of interest to state that he is an orthodox member of the Ilnsso liieek church, and that, degraded as be is intellectually, he has very definite Dotions about heaven and the hereafter. He hopes to introduce his frightful countenance into the court of heaven, and he devotes all the money he makes, over and above his outlay for creature comforts, to pnichasing the pi avers of a devout community of monks in his native village, Kostroma, after his mor tal career is ended, lie is of medium btature, but very strongly built. His' excessive capillary development is not J true hair, but s' in ply an abnormal j growth of the down or fine hairs which usualiy cover nearly the entire surface of the human -body. Strictly speak ing, he has neither head hair, beard, ! mustache, eyebrows, nor eyelashes, j their place being taken by this singu-, lar giowtli of long silky down. In I color this is of a dirty yellow ; it is j about three inches in length all over j the face, and feels like the hair of a j Newfoundland dog. The very eyelids are covereJ with this long hair, while llowing locks come out of his nostrils and ears. Or. his body are isolated patches, sliewed but not thickly with hairs one and a halt to two inches long." Dr. 13ertilIon, of Paris, compared a huir from Andrian's chin with a very hue hair from a man's beard, and found that the lalter was three times as thick ns the former ; and a hair from An drian's head; is only one-half as thick us an average human hair. Prof. A'irchow, of TJcilin, made careful iuqury into the family history of An drian Jejtichjew. So far as could be learned, Andrian was the first in w liora this wonderful hirsutcness had been lioticed. Neither his reputed father nor his mother presented any peculiar ity of the kind, and a brother and sis ter of his, who are still living, are in no way remarkable for capillai r devel opment. The son Fedor, w ho was ex-! hibited in company with Andrian, was j illegitimate, and a 'jout three years of J age. Andrian's legitimate children, a Son and a daughter, both died vounsr. ' Nothing is known of the former; but the daughter resembled the father. '"Fedor ; i- a spiightly child." said ",he account t from which we have already quoted, Vn '"uiul appears more intelligent than the j V father. The growth of down on his face , ('" i not so heavy as to conceal his fea- j tures, but theie is no doubt that when j the child come3 to maturity he will at j least be as hirsute as his parent. The j hairs are as white and as soft as the fur j of the Angora cat.and are longest at the i outer angles of the eyes. There is a ' thick tint between the eyes, and the nose is well covered. The mustache joins the whiskers on each side, alter the English fashion, and this circum- ' stance gives to accurate pictures of! the child a kulicrous resemblance to a Well-led Englishman of about filty. As in the father's case, the inside of J Fedor's nostrils and ears has a thick crop of hair. "Uoth father and son are almost : toothless, Andrian having only live' teeth, one in the upper jaw and four in 1 the lower, while the child has only ; lour teeth, all in the lower jaw. The tusks of the boar, flgair., are greatly reduced under domestication, and the reduc tion Is accompanied I13' a correspond- j ing diminnntion of the bristles. He mentions also the case of Julia Past- J rana, a Spanish dancer or opera singer, i vrho had a thick masculine beard and j a hair3 fore head, while her teeth were so redundant that her mouth project j ei, and her face had a gorilla like ' apiearanee. It should r ill er lie said I that in general those creatines which ; present an abnormal development in : the covering of their skin, w hether in 1 the way of redundancy or deficiency, present generally, perhaps always, an j abnormal dental development, as we ! see in sloths and nrmaddloes on the one hand, which have the front' teeth deficient, and in some branches : of the w hale latnily on the other, in ' which the teeth aie redundant either in numWr or in size. In individual i members of the human family it j certainly is not alwnvs the ease that. the development of the hair and teeth aie directly correlated ; for some who are bald when quite young have ex cellent teeth, and some who have lost most of their teeth while still on the right side of foit, have excellent hair ,' to an advaneed age.
