The Catholic World. With the pres
ent, number opens the twenty-seventh vol
ume of the Catholic Would, and w con
gratulate so able a magazine on its already
long-, most useful, and vigorous career.
There is no fallingoff in interest or strength;
on The contrary, these qualifies seem to in
crease with each number. The April is a
timely and a happv number. It opens with
"A Soul's Holy Week," a sonnet of sweet
music and deep religions thought turned to
each r the sad days of Holy Week. "The
Preparation for Christianity it; the six cen
turies iH'fore Christ" follow". The Catho
J.IC World has bad several articles o the
"Beginnings of Christianity" of la'e. This
last may be taken as, in a sense, the sum and
substance of them. They are of vast, impor
tance, and display in every page deep
thought, illustrated by large k now ledge and
extensive reading, A sweet little sonnet,
with a quaint ring in it, to "Sr. Ceadda'"'
cotnes next. This latest instalment of "The
Home-Kule Candidate" is better eyen than
its predecessors, and ends in a most exciting
manner. "Beligionalism vcrsis Political
Unity in Italy" offers a better insight into
the secret workings of the Italian mind ami
the Italian Parliament than we have seen
anywhere. "Among the Translators" sd
mirablv closes an admirable and exception
ally brilliant series of papers. A charming
sonnet, to "St. Cnthhert" follows this. "Pi
late's Story" illustrates the season. It is
one of those clnssical stories that when well
told, as this one is, have a charm all their
ow n. "On Calvary" fittingly follows It a
noble poem that will be read and read again
and treasured up in the heart. "A Bishop's
Liberty of Conscience in the New German
Empire" gives ns the experiences of Dr.
Conrad Martin, the heroic bishop of Pader
born. In prison and exile, under the new
German Ecclesiastical Code. Tho tiarrative
is at. once touching and sprightly. "Mont
serrat" is a beautiful travel-sketch of a holy
and romantic spot. "Ralph Waldo Emer
son" needs t.o more than tlie title to attract
renders. "Papal Elections" is a continua
tion of the timely and learned nrtic'es on this
subject. "Palm Sunday" is another poem
in keeping with the season and with its pre
decessor already mentioned. "The Late
Mr. T. W. M. Marshall" is a touching and
render memorial of that disiinguishod writer
by his no less distinguished countryman.
Mr. T. V. Allien, author of Th" Form;in
of dirUtcixloni. ' Strictures n an nrticln
entitled 'Political Rapacity of the Rotirsh
Church'" are strictures indeed; yet more
than strictures. They contain a "very full
and clear account of ihe whole question at
issue betivcen the monarch and ihe Church
in the Middle ngeS regarding the right t
investiture, etc. An interesting letter from
Lome, ilewcribiug Ihe death of plus IX., the
meeiiuc of the Conclave, and tho election of
Leo XIII.. 1st ho last article. An unusually
large and brilliant number of literary criti
cisms closes a luiiliant istitnber.

A Bifi Blast from a Bra Bcole. The
communicuiioii ,,f "I. Lilly, Appointee,"
otherwise Steward of the Poor House, pub
lished in hist week- Ihroll, req ui res on ! v a
brief notice from us. We never claimed
Unit there was any law requiring the Poor
Board t j publish an annual statement, tho'
we have said, and no.v repeat ir. that when
the Directors publish such statement the
Democratic papers in the county, by long
and uniform precedent, a re cnt i t led to'charge
for its insertion the lull lates established
among prinierN, ami thai it is a tie-?,jise
business, in 1 he p. t of 1 he aforesaid "I . Lilly,
Appointee. ",to ask them to.lo it for any b s's
and particularly so in asking it to be done
for ne htf the p-h-e paid lor publishing the
Matemeiit for Ih7i5, ami for more than oie
a.'r.I ionk than was paid for the. same work
in th following year. The Directors have
a perfect riebt -o pioctire its publication In
the two Bepnblican papers at "starvation
prices," if they can, but ihey must not expect
that their arbitrary sliding scale wiil be
adopted by the Jh-mornit and Fkf.kiian,
whoso editors have asked for nothing but
what is right, and will submit tn inching
that is manifestly wrong. The Steward of
the Poor House may make the most nut of
bis sudden attack of economy at the expense
of the Democratic papers of the county and
may atiempr to make capital out of it in his
eff u ts to attain the higher position to which
be is said to aspire. That he organized this
contemptible raid on the Democratic press
for his ow n ulterior purposes, is made very
plain from ihe fact that the two Directors
longest in office disavcxv any responsibility
in the mailer, nnd we are sure tlie other
member would not soil his J-u,ls with it.
If the gentleman who has suJdenly grown
so gn at lus taken upon his broad shoulders
thneioire and absolute management of the
Poor House, even to regulating t he business
of Democratic newspaper publisher, the
Directors are of no earthly use whatever,
and should at onci: resign in order to give
"I. Lilly, Appointee," full s-.vay and ample
scope to display his ability as a bogus re
former by closing the spiggot while permit
ting the bung-hole to remain wide open.

in the vicinity, the remainder, who barely
escape with their lives, immediately move
back upon the half-cooled lava, ami there
live in constant fear of another eruption,
foolishly fancying that the only tenautable
portion of the cart h rests within the shadow
of the great volcano. This fairly illustrated
the force of habit, and the persistency with
which people ding to opinions when onci:
formed. For example. Dr. Pierce's (iolden
Medical Discovery enrea incipient consump
tion, coughs, colds and all affections of th
liver and blood, yet some still depend Upon
tihysician ami remedies that have naught
but repeated failures to which Ihey can re
fer. And although Dr. Pierce's Favorite.
Prescription is sold niuler a positive guar
antee lo cure those weaknesses peculiar to
women, ami notwithstanding that thousands
of women hear testimony to Its ettlcaoy, and
the truth of all statements made concerning
it, many vet submit, to the use of caustic
and the knife. Again, Dr. Pierce's Pieasant
Purgative pellet, no larger than mustard
see. Is, will positively cure const pi I ion, where
it is dependent upon dyspepsia or torpid
liver; yet some stiil depend f ir relief upon
the "blue pill" or huge doses of drastic
cathartic modicine. In the face of such
facts, can we wonder a: the blindness of the
poor Italians ?
