Professor Hitchcock, of geological fame, is now engngeil in securing euine of the celebrated losail bird tracks of the Connecticut valley from a spot which has never been worked for that purpose, namely, the shore ol Wetli ersfithl Cove, about three miles below Hartford. The spo; selected is nt the south-eastern part of the cove, in the haly and crumbly freestone formation that underlies the soil, at the depth of from six inches to several reet, uccord Ing to the distance from the water. It ia the same kind of stone tln.t is oh- i tained from the Portland quarries, I twelve miles down the river, ni.tl fa- Tnous as tlo Portland and Connecticut . freestone, out of which many fashiona- j ble "brown stone fronts" are made;! only, this formation on the eastern i bank of Wetherstleld Cove, being so ' Dear the surface and indeed often j actually exposed above the soil, is far ' from friable. V e condense from the Hartford Times these details uf Pro fessor Hitchcock's discoveries: Wetherslield Cove, as many readers In other btates may not know, is a large and beautiful sheet water j formed by the Connecticut rier, with j which it is connected by a narrow inlet, j and from which it is distant from ten i to forty rods. The stones t which j the famous geologist is at ork are embedded in the bank of the cove be- I tween that water ami the river. The ! bank rises gently to the southeast, j perhaps fifteen feet above the present i stage of water in the cove. The exca- j rations thus far made arc only about j two rods from the water, which indeed at the beginning of the work was at the actual point oi comaicijcement, but lias receded since. Here he has unearthed a great many tracks that were broken in the attempt to remove the crumbly stone, and opened to view onestratum of coft red freestone which discloses aline f four fossil bird Hacks of giant size, and made, evidently, by one and the same individual, walking in a southerly di rection. Other tracks, of birds and animals, cros them in various direc tions We say bird tracks, for the argument in favoi of a fossil giant frog or lizard seems not to be so well supported in this ! case as the theory that the li:cUs first ! mentioned are tho-eof some enormous fossil bird. The joint, rutui'itr, spread and swelling of the toes are unmistak- ably of the r&;rich f.imii . but far larger , than those of any !i 'i g ostiich Though not so largo as some of the ! fossil tracks of t!io Connecticut vr.lley, j these footprints, Professor Hitchcctk Pays, must have been made by a bird i that was twelve fte-t high nearly ' twice as large as an ostrich. They i measure about a foot in length, from ; heI to toe nail, and have a correspond- ' mg spreaa and cmpaasis. tome are still larger. In the soft silt and ooze of what was then a muddy shore of the primevaf nea these great birds, walking on a surface that became rapidly sun baked between every returning tide, made a deep, sharply defined and clear cut impression at every step, mid these tracks were fi!h:d up wiih silt and clayey mud by ihe nex'Vdo to vnry ing depths. These depths are now marked by the thin but distinct strata of the freestone into which tiiis mini was in due time convert d. It is really astonishing to sec what minute crea tures, even li tie bugs, not bigger ap parently than small horsetlks, have here left the enduring and mdeniablo evidence of their hasty running on the soft and smooth surface of the ancient sta-beach. in lines of little tracks that ire as clearly marked ("though of co'irse not so deep) as the tracks of' their giant feathered cotemporarics. j It iras indeed a scene of teeming life j on these ancient shores ; a life of won- I drous variety in its for. in. as in the J sizes of the creatures in w hich it was manifested. Here ar great bird j tracks, crossed by the smaller and sliafp-clawed prints of some saurian ' creature, probably some extinct lizard, j Thia fellow u.ust have had not only ' long sharp cl.iws but long heels. Other forms indicate a variety of creatures, j some large, some minute. One mark ! tng looked like the close-Stting joints of a snake. The big bird tracks are j separate! by a stride of about three ' and a half feet, indicating a Ieisuicly ' walk by the feathered b;ped who made j them; probably he was hunting for soma of the myriad of small creatures which abounded on the ancient shore. ' Professor ' Hitchcock, who has se cured specimens at Portland, at South Ha lley, Mas., at Turners Falls, Mass., and other places iithc valley, ' has in his possession or has feen a track measuring fourteen by twenty, two inches a web footed creature, probably of the lizard tribe, whose j stride was three feet seven inches. At Battersou's granite and m.trble work", ; on Main and Pleasant streets, there are freestone slabs from the Portland quarries containing very dearly defined tracks, which meat -.ire twenty inches or over. Professor llitchcoc s ascribes them to a mammoth foss.il fng r liz- -ard. called the Otoz um. This fellow was evidcn'Iy one of a very nuimrons ; brotherhood in this neighborhood. Compared with his basso -profundi) ; note the bellowing of the bulls of. Dash tin must have been mild and nrd- : low music. The worst croakers of these "hard times" could have taken ! valuable lessons of the Otozotim. ! Those were Ihe days of a hot and nruky air, the days when the cooling n hardening shores of earth bristled with endltss ines of roaring voh an es, whea the pter dactyl was yet a living creatine, winging his duky way through a warm, murky atmosphere, and the megatherium, for more com ifortatl dinner, r idled don h rue- J culent trees on which he dined. Ilnjre I creatures, bigger than the largest living .elephant, and whose skeletons are still j occasionally unearthed from the sites J of ancient marshes, which, at some later period, became peat be.ls. were in those tiroes abundant on these once tropical shores, it was a period of tremendous rains, and one of the most curious relics among the fossil markings on these ; red clay sandstones arc certain smooth tablets, unearthed here at the Cove, on j which are clearly impressed the mi- i ' mistukable records of particular show- ers which (in Professor Hitchcock's! opinion) must Lave made their impress ! 2,000 000 ye:4-s ago I In one instance ; the crowded drops betoken a pouring rain ; probably a momentary shower, '. which wa3 insufficient to wash out its own record. In other specimens the seal tered drops plainly show which way 1 the wind was in the particular shower which, in a few passirg moments of a year uncalendared, made the impress on the glossy tide-washed clay mud. ! "Here is one," said Professor Hitch- j cock, "which shows that the wind, ; when that rain fed, was from the j northwest." Neuralgia and Rheumatism A very simple relief for neuralgia is to' boil a small handful of lobelia in half a pint of water till the strength is out of the herb; then strain it oil and add . a teaspoonfid of fine salt. Wring' cloths out of the liquid as hot as pos eible and spread over the part a tree ted. It acts like a charm. Change the cloths as soon as cold till the pain is j all gone; then cover the place with a soft, dry covei ing till all perspiration is over, to as to prevent taking cold. Rheumatism can often be relieved by application to the pairful parts of cloths wet in a weak solution of sal soda in water. If there is inflamma tion in the joints the cure is very quick; the wash needs to be lukewarm Cor. Country Gentleman. n i: uAn vi: n ris ; .1 ; ,v 7s. A FA B M a sn! ISO l5 OF YOUR OWN.
