The frauds practice I upon farmers ,y '"unprincipled nurserymen are well pointed out in the following Irom the Western Farmer : "There i no great er humbug practised upon the credu lity of the people than the offering of new fruits bv tree agents and nursery men, as the'Ust thing that was ever discovered or planted. Nineteen out of every twenty of all these new fruits are entirely worthless. One nursery man hi til apple that U superior to all others, another a pear no one can do without, free from blight and an immense bearer, and the fruit of the finest quality. Another has a currant, n straw lierry, or a raspberry, all en tirely indispensable to the unsuspecting farmer. And still others have grapes i . If that rioen early, are very large, cien- eiotn, and ju-t the thing to supp.y aw others lor all purposes. One has a cherry that will take the place of the Karlv Hiehmond and the Knglih ;lorello. All these will do, according to the opinions of the several owners of the hu.nbug. in any and all climates nud localities, like the patent medicines that are warranted to cure any and all diseases. One man, whose almost ex clusive stock of evergreens is the Ku- . . . . iii ropoan larch, recommends its planting j without limit. Another has supplied j -himself abundantly with the L tali j " .2 hvldid Hifrry, which U really not a p. cherry at all, but a very interior email pltnn. and that is the cherry that ev ery body must have. 0'ir common wild plums are transplanted and nursed Mild a large stock propogated some significant name given them, and then heralded to the world as indispensable, high quality, lai'tre size, cureulio proof, and indeed possessed with more good qualities than any and all other plums combined. Now the result of all this is, the farmers pay out thousands ofj dollars every year for stock that is not only worthk ssF and known to be worth less by tho venders, but important time is lost in waiting for the results that are so boastingly promised, arid only, alter several years waiting, lo find how thev have been swindled." Smat.i. Animals Gnawing Trees. Every winter the agricultural jour nals contain inquiries as to a remedy to prevent mice and rabbits gnawing trees and we are nearly annually an swering them. Our remedy, which wp have tried with success, has proved effectual in eveiy instance in which it has been pronely applied. It is to bandage the trees with an old cotton or woolen clo'.h; or veiy stiff paper will do for mice eight or ten inches high will answer; for rabbits not less than two feet. The latter standing upright will reach uj very ne.ulv two f-c t. and as far as they can reach they will gnaw. The same cloth, if put away, will last for several years. Of course hand a sing must be well done and tied to the tree secure! v. fn rr.inl,.ni tr lir.i-. v.. 1 .1 .; I o in t u( iiiu h i, it lucre are any in the vicin ity, a good protection is to feed them with cabbage stalks, or decayed heads of cabbage, offals of ruta bpgas, cni mt", etc., a supply of which is to be found on every farm. One of most rem irkable races that evrr the in- habited the earth is now extinct ' They were known as the (uanches, and were the aborigines of the Canary Islands. In the sixteenth century. pestilence, slavery and the crueit- ol the Spaniards succeeded in totally exterminating them. They are de eetibed as being gigantic in stature, but of a singularly mild and gentle nature. Their food consisted of barley, wheat, goal's milk, and their agricul ture was of the rudest kind. They bad a religion which taught them of a future state, of rewarls and punish ments after death, and C good and evil spirits. They regarded the vol cano of Teneriffe as the place of pun ishment for the bad. The bodies of the dead were carefully embalmed, and deposited in catacombs, which still continue to be an object of curiosity to thoo who visit the Islands. Their marriage rites were very solemn, and before eiaging in them the brides were fattened on milk. At the present day these strange people are totally e x ti nc t. Jtoidon G lohc.
