VSCLK SAM'S CLOCK
At the Navy Observatorv, in Wash
ington, standstill clock that regulates ;
lime for the whole country, it is not .
Leaut'tt'ut, like many lovely French
clocks that noiselessly lick uion the j
p.alor mantel ; in fact, it is large and j
tall, with plain face, and body of dark i
wood, and without ornamentation. It i
is much like the old fashioned clock
that stood in our grandmothers kitcii J
ens. It nowhere touches either the .
floor or walls of the building, but is ,
securely fastened to a stone pier, which j
rests upon a solid stone foundation, so !
that it "may not be afTccteed by any j
motion of the building or ground.
Kains may descend, floods come, wind :
Mow and beat upon the house, but the J
clock feels it not, for it is built upon a (
reck.
It is a si.lcndid timekeeper.
the present time it gains at the rate of .
.48 of a second per day. j
In order that people all oyer the ;
country may have uniform time, so
important fo- railroads, steamboats,
mid other public conveyances, at thiee j
minutes before twelve each day this j
c lock is connected, by means of a g:d-
vanic batterv, with the wires of the
Western Union Telegraph, which ex-j
tend into the room containing the j
cluck. All other messages, however j
impoitant, must give way for these,
three u.inutes, and in ever' town and ,
nation from Maine to California, whore
there is a telegraph operator, as the
pendulum of the clock ticks, each sec- ,
t.nd a click is recorded bv the tele-
1 i 1 . . . n .. - 1111 il lit fill

twelve two clicks are given.
At the same time a huge black ball
which is drawn up a few moments be
fore descends upon the dome of the
Observatory, and hundreds all over;
the cit v stand, with watch in hand, to
see il drop, to keep as we say, ' ball !
time." Thus, when this drops a click j
in every larce town in the land tells j
the hour of twelve. j
This clock is also connected with the j
Tire Alarm in Huston, and the time is i
sent to the central ollice, and then j
sounded by the three church 1x113
thai ive the lire alarm.
o while the clerks in Washington
are watching the ball, the restless
school boy of Minnesota is waiting to
hear the big clock upon the town
house sound its merry peal, the signal
of dismissal, and the tired factory
girl of Lowell listens eagerly for the
same sound.
Ibit you must remember that only
places "on the "same meridian with
Washington, have after all, exactly the
frame lime. The sun, in passing
round the earth, which is divided into
thiee hundred and sixty
' j" -J - ' -
loniritude. everv twentv-foui
llOUrS '
must pass through ona degree, which
is about sixty-nine miles every four
minutes. So, if the sun rises at seven
o'clock, it w ill not rise in New York,
two hundred miles west, till twelve
minutes alter it has reached IJoston.
Neither will it be twelve o'clock till
twelve minutes later than in lioston.
Take the Pacific railroad ai.d travel
west, with your watch correct in Hus
ton ; when yon reach Omada you will
be an hour and a half ahead of their
time; and when you airivc at San
Francisco your watch will be three
hours and a half fast, becau-e old Sol
is still on his way. When in lioston
on are going to church at eleven
o'clock, the boys in San Francisco nre '
just taking then breakfast at ha'f past
seven. j
So, while I toll you that nil the
town? receive the click at twelve at 1
the same time, you must remember ;
that in places situated in longitude
last or west from Washington, the ;
number of minutes it takes the sun to
pass thoce degrcs mut be added to ;
or abstracted from twelve, to give j
them cornet time. j
Another thing in the room where;
the clock is would inteiest the boys j
who are delighted with everythii.g i
that pel tains to a ship. This room I
may be termed a government depot, j
for here are some two hundred ship j
chronometers. These are simply j
large sized watches, and are liunishcd i
to every government sea going vessel, j
Here they are kept sevcial months to
le regulated, and their accuracy tested j
by this clock. The oflicer in charge;
examines thetndailv at a certain hour, j
ami carefully rates the time kepi by
each.
When a aovernnunt vessel is order
ed to sea. this oflicer takes them with
nil possible care to the vessel, pro
tecting them as far as possible from !
sudd nt jars or violent joltr.ig. J
When on his cruise, the eapttin also
rates daily the time kept by the
chronometer. lie maiks the time'
ln-twccn the moon ami some star by j
his (uadrant, which he verifies by his j
nautical almanac. One was seen at !
the Observatory that had been absent j
three vears with an Kastcrn siiadion '
and had varied during the who'e time
bill A few seconds Wiih; Aintke.
Straw for the Farm. If I" could
have my entire farm covered with
boards I3 ing flat on the ground a whole
year, says a correspondent, I would
expect, more K' 11 flit than from twenty
five loads of barnyard manure to the
acre. Now so far as the straw goes it
has a similar etrect. I believe the very
lcst use of straw, except as litter for
the stables or barnyards, is to spread
it on the fields. I put straw on my
wheat last season with manifest im
provement to the clover, but in that I
was disappointed. I noticed small
spots wl ere the straw had ldi in
bunches the clover was out, having
Ix-en smothered apparently. I took
up boaids from a space alxnit twenty
feet square, after they had lain two
vears, and planted potatoes, the sur
rounding ground being also planted.
Where the lards had laid 1 had three
times as many ousLe's as on a like
plot adjoining.
