no one but the thieves were astir at the time.

The Hollidaysburg Sttitxtfirtl learns from
those who have their int'ttrtiiation direct,
that seme of tlie niiM-rs ct" that county are
in the habit of adulterating their Hour in
the following manner : They purchase white

half Hit itml of wheat. This is a cheap
swindle, but a very mean one, ami the miller
who will allow his avarice to overcotn.i his

AVOTHKR FlUB AT ClfFST SPRINGS.
About 2 o'clock yesterday (Thursday) morn

Esq' , at. Chest Springs, this county, was dis

as k lie beyond the powerof human eftort lo
save it. The H um s also ex tended to a foun
dry near at hand, owned by Messrs. F.&
W. Hart, ami it loo, with all it contained,
was speedily wiped out of existence. The
steam saw mill of Messrs. E. H. Nutter, no,
far distant, was also in great danger,
but through the almost superhuman exer
tions of those present, it was saved from the
burning. The fire is supposed, and no doubt
correcllv, to have originated in the boiler
room of the nidi-el mill. Mr. tt Bn -ti

THE WANDERER'S DREAM.
BT EUGENE.
A youth whor retles tbouKMs betrayed
A tnin.J or discontent,
rom home and duties path had strayed
On wild a.lventtue bent.
He left a fstl er's wise restraint
A mother's loving cure
And wanrterinjr fur, he felt the taint.
or sin a alluring snare.
At lentrth sin's irlowinir pleasures, till,
Keen me a barren waste;
The proffered cup seemed turned to gall
He could no longer taste.
Heart pick ami weary, sn1 and lone;
He lays him riown to sleep.
Where win.;s above the forest moan
And birds their vigils keep.
Krlirht visions In his mind arise.
IMi re dreams or love and home.
Like holy angels from ihe skies,
Bade him no longer roam.
He sees the humble cottage where,
In innocence and jov.
He once had dwelt with sisters fair,
A merry, guile less boy.
He fees his mother kneeling there,
He besrs her breslh to Heaven bis name
In earnest humble prayer,
Tho wanderer to reclaim.
Ho thinks, while gssctng on her face,
She comes with outstretched anna,
To clu-p bitn in her fond embrace
And shield him from all harms.
The sort wind lirts the tangled hnlr
From ott his dust stained;brow.
And like a mother's kiss left there,
It thrills his being now.
Dear mother! kiss me once again,
He murmurs in his dream.
While blessed tears, not tears of pain,
Through his closed eyelids stream.
How oTt that mother's kiss of joy
Hud left lis Imnress there.
When he, a helpless infant boy.
Her home und love did share.
Ah ! well might ansrels long remain
Near such a scene as this.
To woo slid win him back again
To Innocence mid bliss..
A heavy sitrh his slumber ends.
The tilissrul dream is o'er.
But Ootl bis blessing on It sends
And sweet the trulv It bore.

Mr. Diogenes. This singular man lived
in fireece. He was distinguished for his
eeoMttricilies, bad manners, and bad dispo
sition. It was his chief business to find
fault. For example, he took a lantern one
day when the suu was shiliic.g brightly ami
went onl to search for an honest man, there
by insinuating that such persons were ex
ceedingly scarce. When Alexander, a dis
tinguished military gentleman, paid him a
visit ami iuqnied w hat lie could do for him
he hat! the impudence to tell him to "get out.
of his sunshine." To cap the climax of his
oihlitties, he dressed like a beggar ami lived
iu a tub! He was a sour, cratded, crusty
old bachelor. We infer that he hail no wife;
llrsi, because history does not mention her ;
second, because no woman would take kindly
to one of his habits, drosa, or manners, or
aspire to become mistress of his mansion.
"There was an old woman w ho lived iu a
siinc," it is true, hut the woman who would
live ri a tub, and especially with such a coin
pnuion , has not been heard from. The mis
anthropic spirit which possessed this man
was doubtless due lo disordered digestion
ami a billioiiHiies, one of Ihe prominent
symptoms if which is a morose, fault-finding
disposition. The tongue is heavily
coaled, giving rise to a bad taste, the appe
lite is not good, ami the patient feels dull,
sleepy, or dizzy, ami is apt to be fretful.
Unfortunately, Mr. Diogenes lived several
centuries before Dr. I'ierce's Pleasant Pur
gative IVl lets were invented, a few doses of
which would have relieved him of his "bile,"
and enabled him to find scores of 'honest
men" without the aii'. of his lantern. U.uler
their magic influence, combined with that of
the (lohlen Medical Discovery, to cleanse
his blood, he might have been led to take a
more cheerful view of life, lo exchange his
tub for a decent habitation, to "spruce up"
in personal appearance, and at last, have ta
ken a w ife to men. I bis clothes ami his man
ners, bolh of which were in evident need of
repairs, ami liecome the happy sire of little
Diogenescs who would have handed down to
prosterily the name, not of a cynic, philoso
pher, but of n cheerful, healthy, happy ,rirtuous
