The Courts of this county, tinlike those of any other, we venture to say, in the Stale, are presided over by three Johns Hon. John Dean, President Judge, and Hons. John Flanagan, and John D. Tbere is another john, too well known, alas ! as demijohn, that furnishes the greater part of the criminal business which these other Johns are from time to time called upon to take cognizance, of. On Tuesdav afternoon of hist week, a little child of Mr. J. J. In its terror the uufortumirn child rushed into the street, where a gentleman named Klmgeti smiili succeeded in extinguishing tbe flames after very severely burning his owu bands in the effort. Mr. John C. See posters for further particular. We learn br a letter received a few days j ago from Hon. James J. Thomas, one of the memlters of Assemoly from this county, thar owing to sickness he was unable to attend the sessions of the Housn for two weeks pre vious to Monday, the 5th instant. This will account for any apparent neglect on the part of Mr. Thomas in attending to his official duties. He also informs us that Itoth him self a;id his colleague, Mr. Downey, opposed and voted against the Purion Digest swin dle, which, we need scarcely say, redounds greatly to their credit. The 0-reoia Rn-eiUtt says that white some men at Whitehead & Co.'a collieries, on Goss Kim, were at work driving in a mon key drift thrt other day, they came upon an almost perfectly petrified stump having threw distinct roots. All portions of the Hilltop had Iteon entirely changed to stone, axeppt a small portion of the center, which still remained in its original sta'e. This curiosity was found between five ami six feet behtw the surface, and beneath the smut through which the men were working, and has, we are informed, lieen removed by Mr. Whitehead to Huntingdon. On Friday evening last, while reveral parties were engaged in making tlmir pur chases at the m-at market of Mr. Jus. Whence the hnllct came is a mystery, but as no re port of a pistol or gun was heard at. the fine the presumption is that it was thrown from a gnm simg and either by accident or design took the course already indicated. Who did the mischief has not, we lielieve, and proba bly never will be found out. Two gentlemen from the norMi of the comity visited the new jail on Wednesday las', and while there concluded to try how it would look to sport a pair of handcuffs, and with this object in view each of them select ed a set of "Jewelry" and inserting their wrists therein ihe lock closed with a spring. Tbe offence is alleged to have been committed on the night of the 25th nit., while Miss Bennett was on her way home from church, and it isalleged that five other parties not yet arrested were con cerned in the hellish work. Distort Of a Pictcrk. Two 'of the most celebrated artiats the world haa ever t known dwelt in the same city. One: de j lighted in delineating Iteauty in all its graces of tiut, form, and motion. His portraits ; were instinct with the charm of physical -vigor. The graceful, half-voluptuous out line of form and feature harmonised with delicately blended tints. On his canvas, the homeliest faces had an almost irresistible charm. The other found pleasure only in depicting weird aud gloomy subjects. Above all, did he excel in painting the portraits of the dying. The agonizing death-throe, the ghastly face and form, were all depicted with ; marvelous fidelity. There existed between : these artists tlie most intense dislike. At : length this dislike culminated. The Iteauty- , loving artist had been engaged in painting tlie portrait of a beautiful woman. Connois- ' seurs pronounced it- the most wonderful ! piece of art that had ever Iteen produced. ! His brother artist was jealous of his fame ami sought revenge. By bribing the keeper ' of the studio he gained access to the picture ' each night. At riist he was content to only deaden the brilliancy of the complexion and eyes, efface tho bloom from cheek and lip ! and paint a shadow on eithercheek. Later, : his strokes grew bolder and freer, and one i morning the artist awoke to find the entire Letter from California. TCRfXCK, Stanislaus Co., Cal. I March ft, 1S77. On last Wednesday morning alotit. 2 o'clock, as Mr. Michael Breckner, of this place was returning from New Germany on horseback and wasjpass ing down Main street opposite the extensive hardware store of George Huntley, he lie lleved from a strong smell of smoke perva ding the atmosphere, tlrat tbere was a fire in the building. He dismounted, walked to the front door, and Indng satisfied tnat such was the case promptly gave the alarm. In a few minutes several of tbe residents in Ihe neigh borhotd Were on the ground and altout the time of their arrival a small flame of fire was seen lo burst through the weather-boarding next the alley way on the wes tern side of the store room, only a short dis tance altove the ground. In a few minutes the fire engine was at the scene, and the hose was attached to the nearest plug. The source of the fire at that point was very dif ficult to reach, and in a brief period the window in that part of the room waa broken in, and through it the hose poured a constant stream of water. This was kept up for nearly an hour, when tbe fire was extin guished. The front door was then opened, when the full extent of the damage could lai seen. The destruction wa complete, more so on the western sideof the room than elsewhere. All the articles, many of much value, in two show cases on the counters were destroyed. In a word, for we cannot go into details, tho room was a blackened, charred and total wreck, showing that -the fire had Iteer. in progress a very considerable time before the alarm was given or the water applied. Of course all the hardware has Iteen badly damaged and much of it totally destroyed. How the fire originated is a mystery.
