next couple, and so on in the same
manner to all Uie pirty. The com po

part simply horrible; one or two very
lair and one V3ry good. These hot

classes of people, and are considered a
very great compliment. J have never
heard of the ctitoni elsewhere. Hera
it has existed a- f;ir back as the mem

ged lisherwoninn, who has been inar

that at her wedding there were sev

Another old wedding usage seems
conlii.ed to Yoikshire. In remote
pails of the country it is a custom to
pour a keltleful of boiling walei over
the doorstep just after the bride has

A Yorkshire wedding is by rights
wound up by a race for a ribbon. In
("It veland this ribbon is given by the
bri-U groom as he leaves the church,
and all who chose run for it in sight
of the house where the wedding feast,
i held. All the racers, winners and
lowers alike, aie entitled to a glass of
spirits each ; and accordingly a9 soon
a- the race is over, they present them
selves at the house and ask for their
'lowance without any particular invi

near Darlington, and in the adjoining
oi-trict, the bride was formerly placed
us a winning post, holding the ribbon
in her hand, and the winner chiiined a
kiss on receiving it. Oil one occasion
it is said that the bride, being a Meth
odist, refused to give the ribbon.
There . was much dissatisfaction
through the place, and the youths re
venged themselves nfier the tradition

The chin chel-la, or papoose, when
born, is taken by the mother to the
nearest ! tinning stream, immersed and
well washed in cold water. On her
ret urn to the 1 jdge the proud mother is
presented by her husband with a mare
i pony for his heir; the fatted dog is
killed, coffee boiled, bangs cooked and
the birth feast prepared. The hf.ppv
i father invites nil his male relatives and
friends. The tom-tom, with the medi
cine rattle, make the music; the guests
chant a lively melody, and dance until
the feast is served ; the pipe is passed
mound, and when all are helK?d the
father proposes a toast to his wife.
Each guest in turn congratulates the
parents, and then altogether say, "We
are all friends," and drink the health
of the little stranger. After the feast
ing the dance :s lenewed, and at inter
vals the w arriors will count their coups,
the number of horses stolen, etc., and
present their gifts to the parents for
their child. Any thine from a dog to
a horse w ill satisfy the purpose. The
medicine man, who winds up the feast
by i-bak'ng the rattle, demoniac yells,
contortions of his 'axly, and shooting
off his gun to drive the evil spirits
away, receives a pony in fee for his
services, and all then retire. The in-,
itial services are over, and the papoose
starts in life a debtor to his tribe, as
each article, animal, or other gifts pre
sented him must be returned in kind
sooner or later in his life. Sojouwill
perceive that Indian gifts are actually
time loans, and must le paid by the
receiver, or be considered a bankrupt
and dishonored man. If a white man
ie Jves a gift he is charged heavy in
tv est, anil, after lieing initiated never
a.-cepts a second time.
The child is w rapied in skins, ami
put in a kind of elk skin coffin ami
laced around w ith a lariat, as they say,
to keep his limbs straight. His mothei
slings him on her back, starts to the
timber after wood, pickets her ponies,
gets her meals, and attends to all her
duties.
Papoose after leing weaned is pro
moted from his coffin-cage, and decked
out in a blue cloth shirt, ornamented
with elk teeth and Iroquois shells. It
reaches to his hips, and has no sleeves.
Attired thus his wardrobe is complete.
In this condition he roots around the
lodge, makes mud images, and swaps
gray backs for fl eas with the puppies.
"Ride for Your Life." In the
fixtecntli century there were no post
utlices in Knghuxl. (Jovernnient car
riers were the only boareis of letters,
cxcejit the common carriers, whose
principal business was the conveyance
of paivtls. These couriers were un
ilcr martial law, and in the time of
Henry VIII. weie subject to the jien
s'lty of lianginq for ilelay upon the
road wilh their dispatches. The let
ters of those days were consetpunlly
sometimes ornamented with a cheerful
sketch of a gallows with a courier there
on supended. Underneath was the
admonition "Haste! Post I Haste!
Haste for my life!" Post offices su;
relays of hordes were then r VnaUihliti'
at the principal town .-'n .ie hih
roads, and th' l,i u.ia indorsed
on the ifn.. . ni,i. -nt iipatch(fi the day
aud hoto oi their, arrival in transit.
A letter dispatched from Plymouth to
London in K'23. "For His Majesty's
special service," bears nirie indorse
ments. The distance, two bundled
and fourteen miles by (he route taken,
was accomplished in fifty-seven hours
a rate of about three miles and
three-quarters jmt hour. On part of
the route the speed was greater, though
six miles was the highest sjx'ed made,
and on the heavy portion of the road
the rate was two miles, and even less.
From the penalty attached to slow
riding or halting came the proverbial
saying of '-ride for your life," which
saying is uual'y supposed to refer to
Hying from an enemy. From the tak
ing of private letters by the barersof
(Jovernnient dispatches arose the won
derful conveniences of the modern
postal arrangements. 1 1 whs from this
circumstance that the transmission of
the m.iils has come to be a portion of
thi duties of Governments. The
transmission of (jovernnient dispatch
es by special messengers offeicd facili
ties to the public, which, aft cot respon
dents increased, were more and more
valued ami improved, and the advance
of civilization and commercial inter
course is largely due to the facilities
of mail transjortation.
