A reward for Ihe arrest of the young scapegraces who committed the vandal act ought to bo the next thing in order, and we doubt not if done it would result in bringing some very bad lioys lefore the bar of justice. Ex-Sheriff Myers of this place has, or bad a few days ago, an ear of corn, grown on his farm near town, which measures only about seven incb.es, bnt which contains twenty-two rows, in each one of which there are forty -five grains, making a grand total of nine hundred and ninetv kernel-, to say nothing about n few strangling privates. If any nf our farmer friends cm trot out an car of likediinensious which excels this a-mnize-ing production we are the very Iwiy to "ac knowledge the corn" as readily for them as any body who has ever dealt at the cheap cash store of Myers & Lloyd is willing to acknowledge that better goods and fairer prices are nowhere to lie met with in the county of Cambria or parts adjacent. All which should induce parties wishing fo pur chase dry goods, groceries, etc., o give slid firm a call before fooling their money away at some high-priced establishment. Mark Turner, the man whom we noticed last week as having been arrested on sus picion of lM-iig the murderer of Mrs. Maria YVaple, of Walla.-etown. Clearfield county, is sa'd by the Tyrone Herald to have lieen guilty of several acts of incendiarism some I wo or three years ago, but sie-ceeded in fixing the fcnilt upon the husband of the murdered woman, who was sent to the peni tentiary, his own wife and the man Turner appearing as witnesses against him on his trial. Vap!e'8 term of imprisonment re cently expiring, he returned to his home, and it was at first supposed that he had killed bis wife in revenge, bnt if seems that since his return Mrs. Waple informed Turner tliat unless he gave her a thousand dollars she would "blow" on him, and he killed her. As Turner has been arrested and is now in the Clearfield jail, the trial will show whether or not these are the facts. At all events it was a cold, delilwrate murder in broad daylight, on the public highway, and not over a fourth of a mile from I ho resi dence of two families. KKTjT SUITS ntul SASH COA TS. IIoRRim.r. Affair. On Friday evening last a little eight yeir old girl named Shee han, whose parents reside at the .Johnstown ore hank, near town, was sent on an errand to the house of a family named Markey, re siding near by. The entire .Markey family, with the exceptio i of three dogs which they man.igo to provide for in spile of the hard times, were absent. One of the dogs aliove alluded to is said to lie a large, ferocious an imal. The little one, havingdiseovcred that nolKxly was at home, turned to retrace her idcps, when she was attacked by the dogs. Of course she was frightened, and, as many a one of larger growth would have done, tried to escape by running. She was soon overtaken and thrown to the ground, the larger dog literally chewing her legs up from thoRnee down. CJreat strips nf Hesh were torn off ami the little girl was horribly mu tilated. Doubtless she would have been killed had it not ben for the timely appear ance of a man whodrove the ferocious brutes away and rescued (he little one. The larger animal seems to have done all the damage, the smaller ones contenting themselves with drinking the bloid which tlowcd from the little gill's wounds. We learn that the father of the child requested Mr. Markey to kill the large dog, but that, gentleman abso lutely refused to do anything of the kind, evidently considering bis dog of more value than many children. Had we been in Mr. Mil li.tn's olare we would have made no re quest of the sort. The dog is not fit to live and Mr. Bhcehan should kill him Jitor.ce. The man who keeps such ferocious animals abont him and is careless as to whether or not they maim or kill bis neighbors littlo ones, is not a good citizen. Ilollirlaysburg .Standard. The funeral of the late John Kinney, son of Mr. Charles Kinney, one of the oldest citizens of Hoi'tzdale, took place yesterday (Sunday) forenoon. The deceased was aged about 21 vears. and was beloved ami esteemed by nil hisassoci ! sts and friends, of whom there were many. Pontage, Fn., Nov. 21, 1ST6. ErtTTon Frfemas-In the last weekly issue of ihe Johnstown Trihune I notice a communi cation from Sonman, signed "Justice." in which that "talented bugger" undertakes to describe a polo raising which the honest, bard fisted Democrats of this village had Jitsi prior to thc election. This scribbler, no doubt la boring under the decision that clcctricit'i In spires trif. tries to rPc't if j thc " trooly loil" by a dose of that commodity. He snys we lailed o get our polo up on Salurd.iy, "been use the most or ihcir number had too much reform whiskey nml were laid out, etc." Now, for a fact. Just about the drunkest man nt thai pole raising was n Heputdiean ; anJ I am of the opinion that there was no Kepuhlionn there who wn. not inspired more by a desire to get the drinks than to assist in raising the pole. It Is true wc did not get our pole upon Saturday, for the rca3on that we did not have it hauled from the woods until the afternoon of that day, and had not time to perfect our arrange ments: and the pole being very heavy (hickory. It is leet long,) wc concluded to defer t he raising of it until Monday. On Monday we did "raise her np" without difficulty or mishap, and with out ti man from Lilly's being present, or a Re publican either. It is true I here were several persons assisting 119 who had heretofore votisi with the party of fraud and corruption, but who now well they d.in't take any Orant, Kellogg, Chamberlain, or Mitik-ln their's not ant), thank you I If t hero wasjiny Republican assisting let u hHve the afiUlnvit, gentlemen ! Bye, bye ! Benin, i Chest Sprinos, Nov. is, 1ST6. Mr. EnrTon -At a teachers' examination last summer the lollowiug sentence wns submitted tor nnalysis : "Sweet vale ot Avoea ! how cilm could I rest In the bnsutn ot shad with tho Iricn.ls I love best." Now the controverted ptirf Is the principal sentence, namely, "how calm could I r.-st." To straighten this it would rend "I could rest how calm." "I" the subject, "could rest" the predicate, nnd -'calm" hii adverb modil'vii.ft "rest," tir an adjective It, predicate; and these two eases arc tue two horns or thc dilemma. "How of course modifies "rest." Xow your humble scribbler thinks that aim is an ail verb mrvi.l t inir i he verb -"rest ." wh;le others maintain that "rest" is an adjec- tive in predicate. Clark's Practical Oratnnar, P'lge, 240, snvs that "It will be noticed that the .iijt?el i ve in predicate does not mnrliiu the verb. It des cribes the subject by thetiid of the verb.' Now if "calm ' is tin adjective in predicate it des cribe, the Ktil-jfct ity the aid of the verb. .lust ask the question, "How could I rrt 7" ne answer is. - could ivst rufur --or culuily it sh uld be when correct ly writitn. the lortn "calm" In itigfdiowed bv poetic license. "Cum" here evidently modifies the verb "icst"uc-C'.rd-ici'r to ntiy i.ne's common sense. V.'e will just place Iwo similar sentences to-fc-her : Ifovr ci'in eonhl I restI pot.1,1 rest hnw calm. How swevt eouhl I fleepI eon id rest !iuw sweet. Now any one n-ay see that I hese t wo sentences nre similar : nnd b y may also see thenbsurdi ty of the position lhI eit her "calm" or "swc t" is an dj.-ctive d.-scrilliuig "I," for It would be absurd to say I being how sweet could sleep. "f?woet" here does not, describe'"!;" neither does "enhn" describe"!." "Sweet," orswectiy it should be. evidently modifies "sleep," nml as "sweei" bears the same relation to "bleep" that "Oiilm" does to "rest."' therefore "calm" modittcs "rest"' and isau nuverb. A. D.
