its vocation, in order to break the force I
of the victory, made haste to proclaim
that tlie Democratic Legislatureof that !

the Senate of the United States. Of!
course the purpose of such a Mim

no vacancy in the Senate from Missis

Senators, will not expire until lo77,
and the term of the other (Uruce, col

place, Davi3 is ineligible, for the rea

could not be elected for the plain rea

as required by the constitution, but is

Knowing all this, it still euitsthc base

knowing all this, what is called the

broken at the election in Mississippi
and enough of the negro vote united
with the conservatives to Rccure the
State from the clutches of imported
demagogues. A new and prosperous
career is thus opened up to the op
pressed taxpayers of that plundered
State and future good government as
sured. The election passed off peace
ably and without the least disturbance.
This was not the programme marked
out by Ames, her carpet-bag Governor.
Twice he importuned (j rant for military

United Htte goyernn.ent w.,u!d remove . P"b,'s lelac whe e.nain.ng Thursday,
Governor IIartraxft has issued
his annual Thanksgiving Proclamation
sion, as shown by the inner door of the
vault, which was bent neatly double.
The latter was mat'.c of half-inch iron.
The theory is that after the explosion the
burglars descended'to the vault, and ran
sacked the contents of the safe, which wan
successfully blown open. Uut they found
liUle for their pains, as nothing was dis
covered but a Io. ofcuriency and a ipianti
tity of mutilated bills. A bag coniaiinng
about $KM iu nickles was discovered and
the w hole was probably removed at once to
the roof, as it was Mibseiineutly discovered
there.
The thieves now proceeded 'it is sup
posed) to the work of opening the second
safe, for when the vault was opened next
morning the outside covciing ol the lock
was found blown ofT. It is thought that
the second explosion awoke the proprietor
of the boaiding house next door, for he at
any rate sprang out of bed and informed
his w.fe that he believed that something
wrong was gr.ing on inside the bank. He
hastily put on his pants, and with an open
kerosene lamp went down stairs in his bare
feet and around the rear of the bank.
Wheu he got there he was confronted by a
man w ho escaped from the ladder, who In
turn was quick 1y followed by another, and
still another, the latter having jumped
from the roof. An aiann was raised, but
the thieves had made good their escape be
fore assistance ariivc-d. Information was
at once made to the president and cashier
of the bank, who arrived subsequently and
made an examination of affairs. In the
sudden Might of the burglars they were
compelled to leave almost all itheir para
phernalia, such as jimmies, screws, bits,
braces, fuses, bar iron, putty knives, rope
ladders and skull caps. Oi,e ,f the latter
was an elaborate affair, woven or the finest
silk ana or many colois. All tlie tools left
gave evidence that none but the most skill
ful professionals were engaged in the rob
bery. The money lcmoved to the roof
was left of course; together with two com
plete suits of overalls of dark blue stuff
Money was subsequently found about the
building, but in very small amounts.
The officers of the bank state that their
loss will not exceed $."30; but had the
thieves succeeded in getting into the other
safe, w hich was partially blown open, they
would have found notes and oapers to the
amount of nearly $000,000.
