But then he is wealthy, and that accounts for Grant's strong at tachment to him. Another reason why Grant loves Chandler is, that the Republican Legislature of Michi gan last win'er repudiated him and indignantly refused to re-elect him to the Senate. The election in that city is regulated by a special act of the Legislature, and according to the regis tty of this year, made out by radical assessors, there are 171,000 citizens qualified to vote at the coming elec tion, which is an increase of 49,000 votesover the highest number ever cast in that city. This is admitted to be equivalent to 30,000 illegal votes, re presenting anything ami everything, but especially names taken from tombstones. During last week, Judge Lcdlow, acting under the provisions of the law, struck off from tlie registry list 3,135 fraudulent names. The same judge was engaged at the same busi ness this week and will continue it dur ing all of next week, and by the time be gets through it is lielteved that 20, 000 names will be stricken from the list. Can any honest Republican read the following from the Philadel phia Ttnws of last Saturday without a blush of shame ? The efforts of the Democracy to purge the registry lists of ficticious uamen, and thus guard against the possibility of fraud by the opposition nt the November elec tion, ban resulted thus far in striking from the list 8,133 names. This is the fruit of the past week's labors, and a-t the counsel propose to continue at the same rate until tho day of election, it is probable that they will rcaliie their expectations of sti iking 20,000 names off the lists. Such a figure was given to Judge Ludlow yesterday iu resuotiM to his inquiries, and from the Character of the proceedings immediately following it is likely that these calculations have some basis. Lewis C. Cassidy, Esq., On behalf of the Democrats of the Twenty ninth ward, took rules on ussessors to show causa whT 7i"!' names should not be strick en from the lis Ht waul. Iu tho First ard 703 n:t'nc have been maiked otl with only thirteen out of eighteen di ui" purified, and in no V"" retailed up for examination it is alleged that there are 118 fictitious names thereon. In the Second waid 441 names have been marked off from the lists of twe'ity-throe divisions. Iutwelvedivisionsof the Twenty-sixth ward 320 names have bev" stricken off, and In fourteen divisions of tiie Thir tieth ward thera have been 341 names expunged: It will thus bo seen that in tho n.-t Senatorial distiict, where Hon. Geo. Handy Smith is the Republican candidate, there were t,8t4 names struck off, and not quite two-thirds of the lists of Republican sessors hae been rectified. The Demo crats claim that the proportion of removals Is small in comparison with the names marked down from houses and streets that re met mj ths. Tlie lists outside of the First Senatorial district bare not bceri tbirmih!y scanned, but in three divisions f the With ward there wero 124 names marked off; in Biueunww""' ""'DB'U 917 names: iu four divisions of the used by the treasurer caie ,liat no one should suspect them of rsonil i.rofit iml the ' wi,h tl,eir correspondent, for in '! , a,"'e the same issue of the paper they inserted an explicit statement, founded upon per sonal knowledgeof tho fact, that the Dem ocratic nomination for State Treasurer sought Piollet, not Piollet the nomination.
