We learn from the Johnstown Tribune
a rather indirect, medium through which to
obtain news from our next door neighbor, so
to speak lhat the saw-mill, grist-mill, chair
factory, etc., that is now being erected by a
stock company iu Carrollfown, will lie under
roof this week. The building is quite large,
ami the stock holders teel confident that the
industry will prove a remunerative invest
ment. Kinployment will be given to a large
number of workingmen as soon as all the
machinery is placed iu jsisition. Although
removed ten miles from railroad communi
cations, C.irrolltown is a very thriving town,
ami the farms in the immediate vicinity are
among the most productive in the county.
A Barr township correspondent writes
to say that, on Saturday morning last,
whilst silting a: the breakfast table, he ob
served something Hying past one of the win
dows of his house, ami at. the same moment
heard a heavy thud in the room in which he
was seated. Turning atiout, he saw what he
conceived to lie a hawk falling to the floor,
but on examination it proved to lie a pheas
ant, w hich in its headlong flight had passed
through two oen doors and was flying in
the direction of the window, the lower sash
of which was raised tit the time, but failing
to make the curve, struck against the win
dow frame aud broke its neck. The same
gentleman assures us that he is the possossor
of a "big sunflower" which measures forty
five inches iu circumference. How is that
for a hefty helianthiis ?
It is with sincere sorrow that we chron

gloom over a community in which she was
known ami appreciated by nearly everylnsly
for her amiable disposition ami her great
kindness of heart. She was a fine, robust
looking woman, ami gave promise of a long
ami happy life. Her age was only 23 years,
ami as may lie supposed the three children
thus suddenly bereft of a mother's care are
tjnite young, one of them being a mere infant.
Thn remains of th deceased lady were this

RIOURAPHICAL SKETCH OF SAMUEL H EN-
siiF.r.
Samuel Henshey was liorn
in
Sinking
alley, alMiut. ten miles from Altoona, on the
17th day of July, 1.SJ0. His parents were of
German extraction. Samuel was one" of a
family of eight children, four sons and four
daughters. He has one brother living ami
three sisters, all of whom are married
ami reside in this section of the State. The
family originally came from Lancaster coun
ty and settletl in Huntingdon in 1K15. Snl
scqnelitly removing to Sinking Valley, they
remained there until a few years later, when
they removed to Logan Valley, where Sam
uel remained until he was seventeen years
of age. His life up to that time was such as
was experienced by the sons of all farmers
in that stage of our history. At the age of
seventeen years Samuel expressed a desire
to learn the trade of a millwright, and he
mtbsequeutly began an apprenticeship with
Jacob Struck, of Bedford county. With him
be remained for one year after his time had
expired, in the capacity of an employe, when
he liecaine a partner iu the concern, ami so
continued until Mr. Strock's withdrawal
from the business. From that time to the
present he has followed his ticcupation per
sistently in this and adjoining counties. In
18-l'i Mr. Henshey watt married to Miss
Louisa Stvoojie, of Huntingdon, by whom
he has hail nine children, eight of whom are
living. He has four sens, three of whomare
voters, ami they will all give their fatheran
affectionate "send off" on election day . Mr.
Ileushey h;ui alwaysbeeti identified with the
Democratic party, and it may lie remarked
that he is the only ineinlier of the family
who docs belong to that organization. He
has never lieen a politician, but has always
lieen a hardworking, earnest member of his
party, and his nomination is a fitting reward
for bis labors. Mr. Henshey is possessed of
more than ordinary intelligence. His edu
cation was confined to such as was obtain
able iu the common schools of his earlier
days, but he has had much experience, has
Wen a close observer, and is fully capable of
doing justice to any position to which he
may tie called. The highest praise that cau
be awarded, toany man may bejustly given to
him, thai of nn honest man, and in his nom
ination the Democrats have reason to feel
proud, and his opponent, Senator Lemon, has
a foemau worthy of his steel. Altoona Mirror.

Attempted Suicide. To many of our
readers the following from the Pittsburg
Iitth of Monday morning last will need
no elucidation : "A-bout eleven o'clock yes
terday morning a young man named W. II.
Maguire, while under the influence of liquor,
attempted to force death upon himself by
cutting his'throat with a razor. He is alsmt
twenty-seven years of age, and has lieen
stopping temporarily with a friend 'living on
Forty-fourth street. For some days, it is
said, he ha. len drinking more heavily
than is safe for one desirous of maintaining
his reason, and when he committed the act
was undoubtedly insane. Under the im
presssion that Le was being pursued by
I mune unknown enemy, he seized bold or the
' instrument ami gave a quick gash across
the throat, fortunately not deep nor or great
length. He was placed nnder the care f
Dr. Ilanna, and after the wound wasdressed
expressed much regret at what he hail done.
Maguire is said to be one of the postmasters
of the United States Senate, and had ar

we say plainly thnt no person in this world

Costiveness, Sick Headache, Sour Stomach,
Heartburn, Palpitation of the Heart, De

your Druggists, Lemmon & Murray, Ebens

and get a sample liottle for 10 cents and try

Messrs. Baxter & Son of this place have
fully made np their minds to retire from the
mercantile business, ami with that opject in
view are determined to get rid of everything
iu their store as soon as possible, no matter
what, the sacrifice. They ven pledge their
words to sell goods cheaper than they can
lie, or rather are being, bought at auction,
and will take butter, eggs, and other mar
ketable produce, in exchange for merchan
dise allowing the highest price for what
they buy and accepting less than cost for
what they sell. Go and invest now while
there's a chance for first choice. 10-8.-tf.
The Tradesman's Indi-striai. Insti

exhibition of B. L. H. Dabhs' photographic
works of art. Our friends visiting Pitts

rooms, 4 Sixth street, and examine the
splendid pictures that decorate the walls of
his establishment. Every picture taken Is
true to nature. His prices are reasonable,

highest terms of his ability. Don't leave
Pittsburgh without calling on Mr. Dabbs.

fJeAR Frkeman. News of importance, like
'currency." or coin either, has been exceeding--I.
v scarce ror some time past In this section.
Hence my silence. Stili as my scribbling is
poor at beet, there was nothing lost by my reti
cence. A somewhat serious and what migrht have
protcd a fatal accident occurred at Pnrtaire
Station on Tuesday last. The facts as I have
harried thera are that Mr. Mathias biter and
son while in t hp act of crossing the railroad
with a team of horsesjn ttached toa wairon load
ed with bark, aa inline westward bound struck
the wnifon and very badly demoralized it. The
en ir ine also came in contact with one of the
horses land injured It solas to cause its death.
Mr. Ititvr's loss is serious, although he should
feel irratef ul that he and his son escaped unhurt.
Dentil hr.s been unusually busy in this locali
ty durinji the past week, the first of its victims
bein Mrs. Kllen McKlnzie, who died on Thurs
day last, at her residence at For tan e, in the
TOth j car of her re. The deceased had been
greatly afflicted for several years, but bore her
suffcrimr patience, 8he was the mother or a
htrtre family, and was a kind friend and obliir
I nvr neighbor, and her many ifood qualities will
not sHon be rorg-otten. Her remains were in
terred in the Catholic cemetery at Wllinore on
Saturday last. On the same day that her re
mains were consigned to the tomb, death airain
appeared in our midst, selecting- as its victim
Mr. James McGough who succumbed to the
droad visitor after a brier but painful illness.
Mr. M.was about tW years of ajre, and was a
peaceful and upriirht citizen. He had been
throughout his long and eventful life a devo
ted member of the Catholic Church. In which
t emctery at Wilmore his remains were yester
day consigned to their last resting place.
I Understand that the coal bunks thnt have

benefit to miners ami others who have hud lit

I propose the following simple question! to

lie replied:, "Ir I had lis ninny more, and half
as many more, and two tiifhel anil a half. I
