Mimical Kites. In Central Asia
the jmiusenient of flying kites is as
po'miai as in F.urope and America, but
it made to yield a double gratifica
tion, it delights the ear by an emis
sion of sofi melodious murmurings at
the same time that it pleases the eye
willi its graceful birdlike motions.
;u!i kite is so constructed as to pro
duce tlie etlVet of a floating vEolian
inti p, ond thus the flight and the sound
of winged warblers are both imitated
in the winged plaything. -Major Ab
bott gircs a description of these kites
in Li ''Narrntire of a Journey from
3I?ita to Khiva": "Each kite is a
square formed upon two diagonals of
It -Lt wood, who?e extremities are con

vibrates this tight cord, and the vibra

sonorous frame of the kite.
The Scirnfijir American describes
a nvthod of putting any rooster into
a state of catalepsy. Select a dark
colored table wi h a smooth top ; place
it so that a narrow stieak of sunlight
w'.!l f.JI across the surface. Then set
the rooster on the table, and hold his
head down so that his beak comes in
contract with the wood. Now, with a
pk-e of chalk and in the sunlight,
draw a line straight from the bird's
K-ak. .Move the chalk very slowly,
rind by tlie time the line is a couple of
feet i ii length tlie rooster will fall into
:i cataleptic or trance-like condition ;
r.nd although the hands are removed
from his body, he will remain perfectly
rigid for a minute or two. It is said
that a black line on-a white surface
will produce the same effect. Hens
in jv Ik.- similarly treated, but it takes
mnch longer to get them in the trance
state, it being necessary to hold the
head down several minutes before they
come under tlie influence.

AN AMtIS.JHK HEM PLATED.
A gy party of ladies and gentlemen, rfr
reiving some fifty answers to aa "advertise
ment for a husband" which they had in
serted in a city paper, wrote a letter to each
and every applicant, stating that the lady
(represented as being yonng and beautiful)
wbshed, previous to bis being introduced to
her, to see him, at the same time request
ing each to be in a certain place in a certain
fheatre on the following evening, dressed in
a blue coat, white pantaloons and a scarlet
vest, and immediately on the conclusion of
the first net to flourish a white handkerchief
in one hand, and apply a glass to the right
eye with the other. Everything succeeded
so well that, H9 soon as the curtain fell,
about fifty individuals of all ages, from the
smooth-chinned Adonis of eighteen to the
slee'i, portly, self-confident widower of fifty
and the emaciated ba'shelor of sixty, dressed
in uniform according to orders, in the gay
est style and the utmost nicety, with studied
action flourished the handkerchief and raised
the glims to the eye. But who shall paint
the astonishment, dismay and rage, which
were depicted ki every countenance as they
gftzed upon each other and discovered th8
sudden failure of all their hopes ! With al
most incredible velocity they descended from
their unenviable attitudes to Uide their
diminished heads" among the crowd. The
amusement of the originators of the hoax,
who took care to witness its consuniaflonj
may be imagined.
WHAT A HOAX DID.
The Chicago Time. lately inrlulg-ed in
sensational hoax ly petting up a column
with glaring head-lines, giving a detailed
account of the destruction of a theatre in
that city, to which it added a litt of the
"burned alive." The proposed object of
the hoax was to show what wonld reeult
were one of the theatres in that city reallj
to take tire. This was one of the results:
A gentleman jut out of Chicago left "hit;
home the nu,"ht before for the purpose of
attending this theatre with a friend who
was visiting him. They were to stay in the
city over night. The next mom:ng, at
breakfast, the wife of this gentleman took
up tlie morning paper, and was greeted by
the display head-lii:es of this infamous
hoax. In horror t-he turned to the list of t
"killed," and found the name of her hu
band. She thrieki d and fell to the flooi.
The man's mother, who lived withiiim
immediately seized the pnter to tind tlie
cause of her daughter-in-law's dletress. On
tiuding it, sho fell to the floor teside her,
and expired. The wifu liewms a raving
maniac. Surely, there must le some
form of retributive justice that will reach
the causes of calamities such as these.
l:iSKS HIS L.IFK ON HIS FAITH.
Professor White, a champion swimmer,
recently consented to drown himself in order
that his theory of resuscitation might be
tested for the benefit of the London Humane
Society, who were present to witness the
experiment. After laying down certain
rules for holding a drowning person in the
water, he plunged into the river the Ser
pentine, probablj', in Hyde Park and re
mained long enough under water to be
partially drowned. His son then dived
after him and brought him to the surface in
an apparently lifeless condition, adhering
strictly to the principles laid down by his
parent. The breathless body was then
turned over to one of the Humane Society's
officers, and put through the course of treat
ment recommended. The Society had the
satisfaction of seeing Mr. White revive, and
in a short time return to the water without
apparent unpleasant consequences, thus
proving his theory ly illustration at the
risk of death.
A KI'SaIAN I'lASCK.
Tliey have a singular kind of dance con
ducted on the greens of country villages in
Russia. The dnn.-ers stand apart, a knot
of young men here, a knot of maidens there,
each sex by iinelf, and silent as a crowd
of mutes. A piper breaks into a tune, a
youth pulls olf his cap and challenges his
girl with a wave and a bow. If the girl is
willing, she waves hr handkerchief in
token of assent, the youth advances, takes
a corner of the handkerchief in his
hand and leads his lassie round and
round. No word is spoken and no laugh is
heard. Stiff with cords and rich with
braids, the girl moves heavily by herself,
going round and round, and never allow
ing her partner to touch her hand. The
pipe goes droning on for hours in the same
Fad key and measure; and the prize of
merit in this "circling," as tha dtnee is
called, is given by the spectators to the
lassie who, in all that Summer rovelry, has
never siwken and never smiled.
JAIWNKSE MOKAUTY.
The Japanese seem to be a moral sort of
people, judging by their census, which shows
only three thousand criminals in n popula
tion of over thirty-three million souls. Per
haps a Japanese definition of crime would
put a new lace on this exhibit. In th
Island of Great Britain the classification of
criminals varies in different localities. In
the Highlands of Scotland almoserery crime
excrpt murder is regarded with comparative
indifference, and criminals, when convicted
frequently have the option of leaving the
place, never to return, rather than being sent
j til. In the Orkney and Shetland Islands,
also, when persons are convicted, they are
sent across the Pcntland -Firth, to the ruain
land of Scotland, aa a punishment, whereas
the same class of criminals in England would
be transported or sent to ienitentiaris.
Probably the Japanese are as mild in the
treatment of certain offences as the Scotch.
Jaues Docqau, a boatman and lumber
man in Wisconsin, while rawing tie trunk
of an oak tree into lengths for staves, was
attacked by a panther, that sprang upon
him. Dougall was alone his assistant be
ing temporarily absent but his strength
and pluck were equal to the occasion, lie
seized the panther by the throat, and
though fearfully torn by the animal's claws,
he crushed it down in tha snow7and broke
its back, and choked it to death. He was
so badly hurt that he had to be carried
home, but his wounds were cot dangerous
