then the whole herb garden might be fring

wholly devoted to flowers, will afford more
pleasure than an herb gsrden well furnish

thing growing and doing iu it.

: nfvfewt.lx' Iroo.lihp in it. lirfllicllillfrs.
An engraving is shown of similar
' markings on the inner surface of the
Lark of a tree struck by lightning.
Mr. Tomlinson docs not doubt, howev
er, that actual impressions of metallic
objects may be transferred to the hu
i man body by electricity, and cites two
j instances in which the image of a rus
j pended horso-shoe is said to have been
,; thus imprinted, and a third wherein a
sailor was marked witn the exact re
production of the number 44, attached
in metal to the rigging near his cot.
Lightning-burns of this kind are com-
l pared with the observed fact that in
i an electrical machine "lines of force
exist between the two poles, by means
of w Inch we may telegraph through the
air from the negative to the positive
pole," and for their explanation "all
that is necessary is that the object
be plus to the horse-shoe, brass number.
etc., the discharge being a
negative
one.'
About Sick Animals. Nearly all
sick animuis become so by im'proier
feeding in the first place. Nine cases
out of ten the digestion is wrong.
Charcoal is a most elTicicnt and ranirl
correction. It will cure a majority' of (
cases, if properly administered. An
example is of use. The hired man
came in with the intelligence that one
of the finest cows was very sick, and a
kind neighbor proposed the usual
drugs and poisons. The owner being
ill and not able to examine the cow,
concluded the trouble came from over
eating, and ordered a teaspoonful of
pulverized charcoal given in water. It
was mixed, put in a junk bottle, the
head held upwards and the water and
charcoal poured down. In five min
utes improvement was visible, and in
a few hours the animal was in the pas
ture quietly eating grass. Another
instance of equal success occurred with
a young heifer which had become body
bloated by eating green apples after a
hard wind. The bloat was so severe
that the sides were almost as hard as
a barrel. The old remedy, saleratus,
was tried for correcting the acidity.
I5ut the attempt to put it down always
causes coughing, and it did but little
good. Half a teacup of fresli powder
ed charcoal was given. In six hours
the bloat was gone and the heifer bet
ter, yes well. Live Stork Journal.
Protect the Crows. Over in York
county, Pa., a war of extermination is
waged against the crows, a reward of
three cents being paid for each scalp.
Instead of condemning it, we are as
tonished to see the papers of that
county publishing the murderer of the
most crows as a public benefactor.
The only crime charged against the
crow by his most malignant enem' is
that sometimes in the spring he pulls
up a little of the farmer's corn. Yet he
spends all the rest of the 3-ear in hunt
ing up and destroying tire worst insect
enemies the farmer has. Crows will
even eat potato bugs, and a farmer who
planted his potatoes last year on the
edge of a woods had his vines kept
lcifectly clear of the bugs by the
crows.
In addition to this testimony the
Western Rural relates how a tame crow
which had the run of the garden kept
it free from the striped cucumber bugs,
scaiching for them closely leneath the
leaves; and not finding stiflicicnt em
ployment at home, cleared the neigh
Ihjis' gardens for a distance around.
If one tame crow could thus usefully
employ its talents and time, of what
use would the whole family of crows
lecome could we happily enlist them
in onr present hostile manner, of which
they certainly have caws to complain.
Sweet Corn the Year Round.
You mar have sweet corn on your
table the year around by following
these directions : Shave from the cob,
then put in a stone jar or other earth
en vessel impervious to light, !egin
ning with about half an inch of salt in
the bottom of the jai, then pack closely
from thrt-e to four inches of corn ; then
another layer of salt from a quarter to
half an inch, and so continue until you
have reached the top of the jar, where
you will put about one inch of salt;
then cover the jar with anything that j
will keep out the dirt, feoak the corn
in cold water a short time efore us
ing. Xew Method or Kekping Yeast.
The way to have good bread every

white potatoes as your number of
loaves. Make your sponge in the
usual manner over night ; in the morn-
