The alwtnee of Kev. We congratulate ottr good old Ik.ss Traugh on the attainment of his thirtieth year in the harness as editor and proprietor of the "ft ay and incomparable" Hoi lid ays burg Standard a congratulation which we extend with special miction inasmuch as we rooteil it around town as the catner boy ot ; the initial as well as many succeeding ntim- ' bersof that sterling sheet, then as now under-' his control, having entered the venerable and venerated O. S. O. as "printer's devil'" on Tuesday morning, Aprill.'5, 1S45. There fore it is that we take particular pride In recording the long continued success of the Standard and its editor, the latter of whom we hope will for many years yet be spared from the burning no, the turning of the last leaf in his eventful life history. Many act of heroism were performed during the recent tire at Osceola. A young man named K. le Beck, formerly a State policeman, heard that a woman who bad just been confined was lying helplessly in a "A CK"TrrRy ArtEh." The first unm ber of this elegant memorial book has just been received in advance of regnlarpublicrU tion, and we cannot withhold onr tribute to its peifectness as an artistic or literary work, or as a specimen of typographical leanty. Among its many large and exquisitely en graved illustrations are "The Old Swedes' Church, 1700;" "The State House in Mid winter ;" "Observatory at Fairmonnt Park;" Christ Church, 1727;" "New Public Build ings;" "Independence Hall," and many other equally interesting. MoWj should some enterprising book pnl lisher a century hence be fired by a laudable ambition to demonstrate the superiority of the American of 11)76 in scientific attain ments, art cnltnre, mechanical ingenuity, and all the improvements and appliances known to an advanced civilization, over his less fortunate relative of to-day, and with this end in view prepare an illustrated book, every page perfected under bis careful and loving supervision, we are possessed of just sufficient curiosity to desire to live long enough to ascertain how far the old fellow (a man must be old to be alive in 1976) would succeed in the difficult; task of im proving on the surpassing excellanee dis played iu this first number of "A Century After." We put on record here our want of confidence in his ability to do it. The purpose of this work of art the art of the literatciir, the artist, the engraver, and the liookmaker is to depict in its pages the picturesque features of Pennsylvania scene ry, landscapes, and other views in Phila delphia and environs, and fac simile repre sentations of venerable edifices and locali ties, hallowed with memories of the past, which yet remain to us, and, as a contrast, the architectural improvements of the pres ent day. The engravings are supplemented with a running commentary, written in a style at once graceful and entertaining, on the men and events of the century which draws to a close with the fourth day of Jnly, 1876. About two hundred and fifty superior en gravings on woid which will equal any thing of the kind heretofore produced in this country will be contained in the completed volume. The Work is deserving of all praise, and a rrpy of It should have a place in every home lb our State. Published in Philadelphia, at No. 233 South Fifth Street, by Allen, Lane At Scott, and J. W. Lauderbach, and to be completed in fifteen semi-monthly parts, at fifty cents each. For 6ale only on subscription. r.ct.rs for Pardox Applications. The Board of Pardons has iSSneil a series of rules which it would be well that persons applying for pardon for convicts should un derstand. The sum should have been stated at SI, 500, him self and two sureties being bound in the sum of $500 each. This correction we deem due as well in behalf of truth as in justice to our good friend James Condon, Esq., whose presumed acceptance of S500 on part of the man who did the shooting and the requirement of 51,000 from each of the Johnston brothers, who are charged by Mr. "Liiiton with assault and battery with intent to kill, and by Mr. Myers with assault for a like purpose, might seem like favoritism in the dispensation of justice. Her disease was sonsumption, her death se rene and tranquil, cheered as she was by the assurance of a blissful Immortality beyond the tomb. Possesinjr all those excellent qualities which ennobles the female character, her loss will be sincerely lamented That mother's heart, so sad and weary It Is achimr at her loss; She la bowed and nearly faintiny 'Xeath the heavy, crushing- cross 1 For she dreamed not that her Magpie Would so soon be called awav. She has left a world of sorrow. Full of foil, snd grief, and psfn. And our loss, thou-rh deep and heartfelt; Infinitely is her gain.
