Our branch railroad was ttownl up

one of the Trees awd various other marks T11

nerve in the vain attempt to prolong life.
When found, an ugly gash in one of his

recapitulate his principal points :
Kirs' aiK-unicnt in favor of compulsory edu
cation "That the want of education -ts the
cause of indolence, poverty and crime." This
assertion, fal&e as it was gratuitous, was met
and refuted. ...... . .
Second. Some person cni led Dives, no donbt
thd man in tho fiospel was meant, contributes
freely (?) to the common schools, and accord
ir.g.v he considers it riht that the children of
tho Commonwealth should have tl.e benefit of
his ireporosity (?), and in this argument is insti
tuted that a compulsory Jaw shonld be enacted.
The Trrftes of 1nierriiratiin I have put in the
above sentence would refute it. In my latter
I showed up the folly of said argument.
Third. An argument was drawn from a sup
posed ease of cruelty on tbe p:irt of a parent
towards his child. " When -n psrentv' says
Patronus, "cruelly whips his chfid until he
blackens his bo.:y whh s( i ipes, surely then the
State has a right to interpose in behalf of tbe
abused child ; and Is It not (renter cruelty and
barbarity to let u child grow up without edu
pa'tion?" And Patronus s!at-d ou ono occa
sion that more than half of the children did
not ko to ijcliool, and by implication he accused
their parents of heinir like the monster he
descrilcs. This I characterized as nn insult to
the parents of those children, nnd pointed out
the otner nan consequences i-nat woun
