How to Raise Fi.ax At the lat session
of the Farmers' Chd, tlie stiti ins and
directions conve'-nin!?; tits eiii;inic?l aim ist
everything except what is absolutely neces
sary for a tiller of the soil to know before
he can rtisc a cro of flax in a satisfactory
manner Tiiese ia.li-pensable requisites it
is proposed to snpnly This will be the
'ipoloiry for snvin brief Jireetions for mis
ing !li with satisfactory profit.
It is of eminent importance that a flax
rrower shoi'.U unilen-tanJ lioforehaml what
is to be done, how it shmill be performed
and what should he avoided, in the manage
ment and preparatioa of the soil. When
flax is rnNed for the fibre chiefly, nothing
bat flax should lie allowed to occupy the
ground. Hence, grass, weeds and other
crops growing among flax must he avoided.
A sin-oth and even surface of the ground
where flax grows, is of great importance
when harvesting the crop. Hence, elids,
pods, tussocks of grass half decayed, r.nd
numerous hollows should be avoided. The
seed should bo of prime and uniform quality
and be put into the s,i! at a shallow and
uniform depth, so that there may he satis
factory uniformity in the length of the
tems. When a part of the scsd is barely
covered another portion is buried by the
feet of a heavy team several inches deep, the
flux will he of unequnl height and will not
mature uniformly. Hence teams should
never be allowed to travel on land whero
flaxseed has liecn sawed, unless the surface
he so compact that the seed will not be bur
ied more than one inch in depth. The seed
must lc sowed with uniform cieaness or
the fibre will he of variable quality. The
foregoing are the chief essentials. Now
then, the all-important question is, how to
do the work. The cultivator lias leeii told
what to do times without numlicr. Rut
how to do it is a part of flax raising which
has never seemed to lie worthy of the notice
of writers on Rax culture.
Most writers have told us to choose a rich,
loamy soil for flax. R.it when a fanner has
not a square rod of loam on his entire farm
such counsel will tend to bewilderment.
Fl ix can Ie iai.-s;d on any soil w here fair
crops of the cereal ia, red clover and gra-s
will grow. The primary desideratum is n
mellow and smooth seed bed. This must
he prepared with agric.ilt.iral skill. It will
neer do "to hog oer" a lield ia the cut-and-c
ver style of ploughing. If the seed
is to sowed on sod ground it mast he
ploughed in a neat, smooth and ploughum:--like
manner. Then the surface shuul I he
rolled to press the furrow slices down evenly,
after which it .sliould ha harrowed two,
three or four times, or until there is a depth
of two or three inches of mellow soil. The
seed inny then !e sowed and covered with a
brush harrow, drawn hy one or two men.
If the gro-.ind is heavy and dNpo.-cd to lv
imnj.y, let it he ploughed in late autumn,
v. that every clod will he red.avl to a mel
low eoii'liti-m before spring. When the
hind is sulli i-'iitly dry to be worked in the
spring let it be harrowed sm-wthly, rollc 1,
if at all lumpy, the seed sowed and covered
with a brush harrow. Let the surface of
the field be made as smooth and mellow as a
carrot bed before the flaxseed is put in.
Then, if hushed in, the crop will be of a
uniform growth, and will yield much mors
of both seed and fibre per acre.

A New Paint. A new ceonornieal paint
tvith the oxi-chloiide of zinc has just been
discovered. It nitty be made in two ways.
The first is by taking chloride of zinc, pre
p trod hy the ordinary process, and free of
acid, concentrating the solution, so that
when col 1 it marks fifty-eight degrees
Reamne. Then prepare a solution contain
ing 1 1-2 pounds of carbonate of soda for
eeiy 3 gallons, and mix the two solutions
in the proportion of 9 pints of the first for
. gallons of the second. This liquid is mixed
u ith the white of zinc to form a paint of
ordinary consistence, whieh is to be applied
immediately. One equivalent of chloride of
zinc for one equivalent of oxyd is found, by
analysis, to Ik- in the above proportion. The
?eond method of making this paint is by
using the sulphate of zinc. In this case, it
must be a solution marking 10 degrees
Ren nine, adding, for every gallon, 1 ounce
of borate of soda. These solutions may lie
kept for quite a length of time, but the
wiiite of zinc must be added only when the
paint is to be used, and then a quantity only
sufficient to last one hour is to lie prepared.
The white which it gives is very line ; it
colors as well as oil painting; it is very ad
hesive and solid ; its price is half that of the
oxyd of zinc; it is inodorous and may lie
used on wood, iron, or cloth. It docs not,
however, mix with coloring matters, and
must be applied only as white paint.
Steel Tens.
The prowth of pens has kept pace 'with
oar fractional postage, our locomotives,
and our steamships. The quill would
never have sufficed, and so pens of steel were
brought in. They were first sold in England
that is, when they could be got nt five
shillings each, and wien they were, at the
best, of indifferent quality. They were
very gradually improved, and in time flexi
bility and softness were given to then, by
the addition of two side slits The demand
increased; machinery was employed in the
manufacture, and the price -was reduced to
one shilling. A constant lettering and
cheapening have since lieen going on, and
now steel pens are used nil the world
over. They are manufactured in innumer
able kinds and qualities, and sold at from
three-halfpence to twelve shillings a gross.
At the low average of half penny a dozen,
more than three thousand pounds' worth
are made weekly in Riniiingham, and near
ly fifteen hundred pens are sold for the price
of one fift 3" years since. Rut they may be
had at three half-pence a gross, or twenty
four for a farthing, and each pen will have
passed through at lco-st twelve different
processes !
A writer says : I planted early and
late peas at the same time in the same
drill. The early sorts, he says, "came
up first, caught hold of the stakes,
supported the others until they got hold
of the same, and the result was he had
a beautiful crop of peas three weeks
Ix-fore the late varieties were ready to
gather, thus giving a double crop off the same
ground with the same sticks." This will do
well for persons having nuiull gardens.
