and says he feels just us young a-s he did
a half century ago. Father Ross says he
was not in the Revolution war, but was an
eye witness of the battle of Guilford Court

claim to having been a member of the

of even hav ing e ver seen tho General. I la

oent snowed a power of talking in swallow-
language ajid a power of sympathy
and of planning to work together.
A ease of sympathy without the talking
and planning happened recently in Newton
Mass. Some pet hens and pigeons are fed
together daily, and have become good friends
and well ac.uainted. One day a cat spran
from a Mace of ambush on the piacons, and
.seized one m its claws. The pigeon strug
gled hard to escape, and dapped its wings fn
terror, but in vain. Its doom was sure if
utd.clpcd. Help came from an unexpected
source. The hens looked on in surprise at
the suddenness of the attack, but at length,
as if comprehending the situation, Iwo
roosters and three or four hens rushed at the
eat, and by vigorous pecking compelled it to
give up the prey and tike to its hecLs in solf
defense. IJefore a spectator, who saw the
whole scene could roach the spot, the pigeon
was free and had Gown to his house.

A nut dropped by a squirrel fell througn
the opening in the middle of an old mill
stone which lay upon the ground, and, Kin"
thus protected, grew into a thriving sapling
that shot up through the opening. In a few
years it had inercasod so that it filled the
space and was firmly wedged to the sides of
the heavy stone. Still it grew, and in a
few years more, little by little, it lifted the
entire weight clear from the earth, so fhat a
man coId sit Kneath it. All was done
ly atom after atom, borne hy the sap to the
growing trunk. Think of this, my little
man, puzzling over "long division" in arith
niet.c; little by little of thinking and work
ing wnl take you through fractions, rule of
three, and those terrible problems at the end
of the book, by-and-by ; but lie sure that
little by little is not neglected. And you.
Lard-working lad on the farm, or in the
shops look at Franklin, Watts, Morse, Field,
and thousands more who have lifted the
weight of circumstances that wonld hold
them down like millstones, and who have by
tacir steady perseverance risen above their
je iows, easily bearing their burdens, and
.keep pegging away."
