Don't think of passing by the store of

The "Mountain House saloon, which
has recently been refitted, rearranged, new-
Iv papered, wainscotted and grained, is now
presided over by that pleasant and clever
gentleman, Mr. Jamea D. Maltland, who
knows how to preserve good order, keep a
respectable bar, and give entire satisfaction
to all his customers. Mr. M. claims that he
sets up better liquors and cooler and more
refreshing lager beer and ale than can be
bad elsewhere, and those who imbilx) .eem
perfectly willing to substantiate this claim.
A young man named Chas. Meintel, an

We need scarcely invite attention to tlie
announcements at head of precedingoolumn,
as our readers have doubtless ere this be

of course our province to recommend any of
tho aspirants in a special manner, but we
can say with truth that each of the gentle
men named is as clever, competent and de
serving of impartial consideration at the
hands of the convention as any who have

at the next election. May the best man win.

Dr. n. V. Piebcb Your Discovery needs

fifteen I caught cold, and for twenty-eight
years I have been a perfect wreck of disease,

dollars, and never any better but worse,
when 1 give up all liope lat spring of living

after reading it that it was too late to try

He went and bonght two liottles and I fonnd
it was helping me very mncli. Since 1S-H
I was troubled with Catarrh and Soro
Throat, and was almost entirely deaf in one
ear and my voice was as dull as could las.
There was constant pain in my brad. Now
nij head is as sonnd as a dollar, my voice is
clear, and I have used ten bottles of your

My skin was rough. When I put my" band

The loss of property in and aliont Johns
town, resulting from the terrific storm which
prevailed there on Monday afternoon last,
amounts in the aggregate to a considerable
sum, several of the farmers in the vicinity
being the principal sufferers. Mr. Hoffman,
a farmer residing near Geistewn, estimates
liis loss in grain, fruit, etc., at altout Sl,0o0,
and Jacob Werts, Abner Griffith, and others,
of Coneniaugh township, think they are out
of pocket some 300 each, more or less, in
the same way. A farmer's wagon contain
ing several sacks of Hour was deluged by
the storm while standing in the rear of the
Arcade building, Johnstown, and the flour
was so well kneaded in the wagon that it
will probably not he needed in the family
ns a breadstuff. Trees were tiproted by
the wind and window pane. demolished
without mercy by tlie hail stones, some of
which are said to have measured fully six
inches in circumference when picked up fif
teen minutes after the storm.

Carty, a. coal miner residing between Planes
4 and 5, on the old Portage Railroad, con
ceived the idea, on Sunday last, during the
absence of his parents at church, that it
would be a good joke on the potato bugs to
gathpr a lot. of them together and blow them
inro "kingdom come" with the aid of a
quantum xufficit of gunpowder. Acting on
this idea, he herded the hugs in the imme
diate vicinity of a can containing about two
pounds of that explosive material, after
which he placed an ignited match to tho
magazine, and aud in less than no time
found liimself minus tlie sight of lothe eyes
and bis head shockingly burned. How be
escaped even with bis life is a mystery, as
he was leaning over tlie infernal machine
when the explosion took place; yet with
sight gone and features disfigured the world
will have but few charms for tho unfortu
nate lad whose existence thus has been so
providentially preserved.

j Or-K Mineral Wealth. Under this
: caption the (iFceola Kri-eille vf the 3d inst.
disconrseth as follows :
The western slope of the Alics-henics was ef
. one time in our past history xnsidered the
least valuable rKioii In the Slate, but more ro
. cent developments have shown that Pennsyl
vania s richest deposits or mineral wealth are
buried beneath the surface or our roujrh ami
I rugxed wilds.
So little impor'anc ha been attached to
j the value of this part of theSiute. tiiat no at
f tempt was ever made to record its early hislorv.
I No stirring details of bloody battle fomrht
j with "the rcd-skiu braves"' on these mountain
j slopes, thrill the patriotic heart of the histori
cal reader, and even tradition, the million
tonrued .rum peter of doubtful herovs of more
favored place, shifts no sour f honor to re-
vive the forgotten irlorv of doom ted warriors
slain on the hills and vailies that surround our
peaceful, pleasant little town.
The mincr-,1 area of this region Includes
within its limits. Clearfield. Cent re and Cam -
j bria counties, embracing all ihe territory be-
iweeu Clinton tind Somerset. Indiana, find
Jefferson, adjoining, are also mineral counties,
but our purpose, at proFcr.f. is to notice the
mineral resources of Clearfield county in cm:,
nection with Centieand ( ami. I'm.
A series of articles on the early history of
the latter eountv, written by It. L. Johnston,
an able mid well known representative of the
Cambria county bar, appeared may years ago,
and attracted considerable attention from the
public, rrom the fact that the writer dwell to
some extent on the dormant wealth hidden in
the hills of the "'mountain county." Later
articles appeared In tiie Ebcnsburir press, from
a writer at Fallen Timber, who f.illy described
the enormous and extensive vleposits of min
eral wealth In the northern pm t or Cambria
and southern portion of Clearltuld. Later de
velopments ( to; prove tlist tills portion or
lea i 2 wll county U not less favored in miur-ral
resource than thoso districts to which these
articles rerer. The coal tlnd Iron fields of Cam
bria county, beingr fully developed in the vi
cinity ot tho Cambria Jroti Works at Johns
town, necessarily at tract more attention than
could be expect od rroui our comparatively un
developed resources. But our unlimited coal
d-posita are heintr operated as rapidl v as cir
cumstances will justify, mid It is found that
oiircoal is equal, if not superior, to any other,
both in quality and quantity, and is rapirllv
superceding the coal of other regions. Several
hundred cur loads of our eoal are briny dully
sent to market, and yet. the demand is steadi"
y increasim-, and will continue to increase
lonj- after ail other coal fields in Ilia Stale have
become ex ha listed.
Our county is not onlv rich In coal, but
ahoiinds.iii larire :l posits r iron; which, like
the coal, form almost continuous beds rrom
Johnstown, in Cain bria county, to Karthau, in
the lou-or part of Clearlield.
Many years aro. Ashland Furnace was built
on learlield creek, near C hest Fnrinirs and
havinir been operated seyernl rumm ,,. ,..'n. ..ri
iron of a pood quality, but the cost or trans
porting the metal across the Allegheny moun
tain on wntrons, proved too expensive, and the
business was abandoned.
At Fallen Timber, on Clearfield crock, a larj-e
body of iron ore was opened about seventeen
years ajfo, and a few miles up a tributary, at a
point two or three miles troin tho present ter
minus or the Bell's (Jap railroad, there is a
vein of ore fourteen feet in thickness. Speci
mens of iron arn found alony t he entire leiijrth
of Clearfield creek and on all its tributaries,
but at present, the owners find no use for It.
Red ochre, tire clay, and specimens or brown
marble are found throughout the whole ex
tont of the Clearfield coal and iron rcjrions.
Lime is also found, but in limited quantities.
The coal interests are attracting- most atten
tion at present, and our town is the acknowl
edged center of all operations in that business.
Uoutzdale, on the Mo.shMunon Branch road. Is
a new and Uourishinir town, populated chiefly
by miners, and Motdianuon Banks, Beavertou
and Sterling are important minintr points. The
new Branch road leading from Sterling is des
tined to develop new and immense, deposits of
the most valuuhlw coal, and other branchea will
soon extend into other and equally extensive
coal regions.
Fatiikr Lemib and rits Bchooi.s.
The many friends in Cambria connty of the
venerable and much beloved Father Iemke,
otherwise known as I'ather Homy, will
peruse with interest the following "from a
late issue of the Elizabeth (X. J.) Herald:
Tbe insufficiency of eur public school accom
modations in Elizabeth, ami the evident dispo
sition to restrict them to the lowest possible
minimum, has compelled, to a dejrree not often
seen elsewhere, the adoption of other means
or instruction; and we have private schools in
p-reat variety, and. It is claimed, ot superior ex
cellence. In addition to these, too, parochial
schools, under tho charge or pastors of the Ko
uian Catholic Church, arc maintained in each
of the four parishes in which the city is divi
ded : and. as there may be many anionic the
readers of the llrrabl not acquainted with the
extent and efficiency of their operations, a
short statement of thoir present condition may
not be without interest.
SCHOOL or Tn K BKN'RntCTIWK SISTKHS.
All the citfzensor Klizabetli are familiar with
the extensive structure on Matrnnlia avenue,
near the junction or Held street, in tho Third
ward, and occupying, with the grounds, an en
tire block. Ktandinir in a section or the eity
not yet very densely populated, the large huild
inir dominates a wide district; and, from the
windows, commands an extensive view of tbe
sin Toundinir country. It has little of the tra
ditional frloom supposed to characterize he
institutions of which it is a representative;
but built in a lljrht modern stylo or architec
ture, it mljjht be taken for a colleiro, rather
than tho house of a religious Order. It is
healthfully and pleasantly located, and when
time has added to the growth of the trees by
which it Is surrounded, it will be a placeor un
usual attractions. This is the convent of the
Henedictino twisters ; or more properly "Mt.
tValbunra's Convent of the Order ot St. Bene
dict." Sieveral years ur-o, ou the application of
twenty-six ladies who wished to devote them
selves to that life or usefulness which they be
lieved could be found in the education of thoir
sex within tho seclusion of a cloister, the Leg
islature frrantod a charter, and tho Ordor was
founded. The erection of the buildimr which
they now occupy is due to the exertions and
sacrifi -es of Father Henry, at present the pas
tor of St. Henry's Parish; but thon of su.
Michael's Church on East Jersey street. He
purchased the jrround on which the convent
stand from his own prl vato means, and obtain
ed such donations and securities as permitted
tho completion of tho very elojrant structure
which is now an ornament to thejeity. Within
t he buildimr is the chapel, a tastef ul room with
a small nrifiiii, and capable of seating about
eifrht hundred people. Father Henry boasts
the tlnest music in the city. The organist is a
young- lady, whom lie has trained from child
hood to tho practice of the instrument; and
the choir is composed principally of some of
the Sisters of the Order.
The bourdinir and day school, which is the
main object of the institution. Is tho hljrh
school under the etiarire of the Catholics in the
city; and though at present suffering, in com
mon with all other enterprises, from the finan
cial distress, it Is usually prosperous. Music
and needle-work are specialities : and German
and all the higher branches of F.nirlish educa
tion are taug-ht thoroughly. In addition to tbe
high school, parochial instruction is also given
in the Convent ; and nearly two hundred pupils
from tlie neigh oorhood are in daily at tendance.
Father Henry speaks hopefully of the future
of the institution when the extensive grounds
shall lutvo reached their highest state of im
provement, and time shall have added to the
reputation and influence of the school.
The "Victor." It is a well established
fact, which experience more fully demon
strates, that patents are susceptible of im
provements and defects remedied. Jn no
case do we sea this fact more fully exempli
fied than in the Si?wiug Machines of the pres
ent day, many of them being almost worth
less for lack of tbe more recent improve
ments simplifying and adapting them to
more general service. In this particular we
notice in our market the "Victor," intro
duced by Mr. If. L. Shown, agent for Cam
bria county. Mr. It. has had several years
experience selling the "Singer," and well
knows that the " Victor," in its more modern
construction, far excels auy other Sewing
Machine offering in our town or vicinity.
It superiority consists principally in its im
proved shuttle, its interchangeable drop
feed its tension, its straight self-adjusting
needle, running more easily, rapidly and
quietly, and in all motions being positive.
The agent for the "Victor" courts investiga
tion and a thorough examination on the. part
of the public, well knowing that when any
person purchases a machine it pays to look
around. To be seen at bis residence in tbe
west end of Ebensburg.
