A lad named K'or,t7., residing near Lo
re' to, went to his father's carpenter shop,
on Saturday morning last, to start a fire in
the stove, when by some means he set fire
to a lot of shavings near the front door,
which cut. oti" his means of egress, and when
his father reached the shop soon after, he
found his son lying on his face and nearly
suffocated by the smoke. He at once chuck
ed the prostrate boy through thj window,
and succeeded in extinguishing the flames
before much damage was done to the shop.
County Superintendent Chapman in

night with a friend, when upon comparing
mites, it was discovered that his father and
his friend's father were liorn in the same
year; that his mother and his friend's moth

his friend were liorn in the same year, and
that his wife and his friend's wife were

there would scarcely be one chance iu a
million of a similar coincidence.

Mr. Brown it ought to soon gain its way to
many of the households of this county.

j South Fork, April P, 1S74
Dear Freeman I Lave not sent, you a!
letter for several weeks, simply for the reas- j
i 011 that we Lave nothing new or startling to j
communicate. Some suppose that my si- j
lence was caused by the failure of the South
Fork "ring," but such is not the case. Our
"ring" is in good working order, aud we
are prepared now to take contracts to pave '
streets or build post-oftices. We are so '
strong, indeed, that we have no fear of the ;
Siiuimerhill "ring" woriusor any other man. i
By the way, Mr. Editor, that reply was j
: never published. Ko, sir, they did not dare 1
to respond; but, in imitation of LT. S. G., re- I
: luuiued silent. You must know, sir, that '
; we are too many for them, and that our
1 population is increasing rapidly from natu- j
ral antes and otherwise. j
The only interesting occurrence iu fsoutlr !
! Fork since my las w as rather a serious one. j
I refer to the sudden, death of a favorite
! inule, Tobbn by name, but called "Toby"
1 fur short. He had the misfortune to miss .
hi footing and tumbled over the hill at the
! coal mine of Messrs. J. C. Stineman & Co., j
. falling down the shoot about thirty-tl ve feet. I
I Tobias was a faithful mule of an uncertain ,
i age. He was never known to go back 011 a 1
j peck of oats, nor miss a day's work, if he !
i wa needed. None knew him but to love f
: him. My pen would fail to express the
deep sorrow which prevailed our entire com- !
mutiity, and therefore with a teat for the j
departed we pass to other things. j
South Fork ha been quite dull for several j
weeks, but we hope for better things. , The j
coal shipments have increased and the saw ;
mill is kept quite busy. It. deed, sir, I think '
the prospect for a good spring work is
bright. j
We have had quite an interesti.ig revival ,
of religion recently under the auspices of j
the L'uited ISrrthcrn. (Ireat interest was
manifested by a large number. I f-pAKE NOTICE Having bought

Those Fish. Hon. 15. L. Hewit, of llol

to bedelivered to Judge Reese J. Lloyd and
J. Alex. Moore, of this place, who have ta
ken a great personal interest in the experi
ment of introducing fish into the stream of
this section. We understand from these
gentlemen that it is their intention to dis
tribute the fish iu equal numbers in Shinkle's
dam, adjoining our borough, which is one of
the sources of the Conemaugh in Hebe's
dam, about three miles north-east of this
place, whii hrlows into Chest ('reek and in
thedam of Evan J. Evans, three miles north
west of Ebeiisburg, a branch of Itlacklick
creek. We trust the experiment will prove
a decided success, and express the thanks
of our citizens to Messrs. Lloyd and Moore
for their active efforts in procuring the fish,
and to Mr. Hewit for furnishing the same.
There is no object more worthy of State aid
and encouragement than th culture of fish.
It has leen commenced under the most fa
vorable auspices, and if pr per y managed,
as we think it will be, cannot fail to prove
an invaluable benefit to the people, not only
of this county, but of the State at large.
I. S. The tish safely reached this place
yesterday afternoon, the conductor of the

made an extra run to Cresson to receive the

afternoon and this morning placed in the
dams named, and have, ere 'his, gone 0:1
their way rejoicing. A few of the fish are
now on "exhibition in a glass jar at Dr.
