Quite an unpleasant sensation was cre
ated ia Johnstown on Monday last by the
suspension of all operations at thti Cambria
Iron Works, the employes being notified 1
on going to worn tuat morning that their
services would not be needed not at least
for the present. The cause of the suspen
sion is said to be a threatened strike on the
part of some of the mineis. which has since
culminated, the demand being for an in- i
crease 01 wages. 1 be Company have im
mense quantities of railroad iron piled up
waiting purchases F, and the probabilities
are that they w PI fight it out on the suspen
sion line if it should take them all summer.
More's the pity, na an almost complete
stagnation in business and great suffering
must be the inevitable result if this state
of things long continues.
Our friend, Charley Cain, of Minister
township, is the owner of a cow which is
certainly "some pumpkins" on the fecun-
dity question, sl.e having given birth to 110 j
less than three calves on Tuesday night
last, all of w hich are fully developed and
well formed. This wholesale yield of calf
flesh biings the number up to live which
this remaikabic cow has given birth to,
the other two having camo in the usual
order of one at a time, which is doing ex
ceedingly well for a six year old heifer.
Blair ti.d Iiodford counties, as well as the

of a queer specimen of the lamb species,
the peculiarities of which, however, a;o of
a nature which, to be appieciatcu, should
be seen, not read about.

The night was fearfully cold, the v, heels
crinzed on the frosty track, and ihe great
kino-bolt, which holds the car down 0:1 the
truck, would rise and fall with an alarming
found. Even Morre.ll, the great railroad
iron man, who is not easily frightened,
straightened himself up on bis seat, and
g!t.ticcd around with suspicious louks, as if
expecting some casualty.
When th train had passed Kittaunitig
Point, or the "horse-shos bend," as it is
familiarly called, and was on the heaviestup
grade on the Allegheny mountains, the bell
rope tightened with a sudden twang, struck
the top of the car, and streti bed la vend its
utmost extensions, it snapped and slackened
with v rattle that nearly broughtdown thu
lamps.
A short 'Mown breaks" signal from the en
gine caused a few am ions passengers to look
oat, when they immediately discovered that
the two powerful engines had broken loose
and were some three hundred yards up the
mountain.
To old railroad men. like Morrell or Con
ductor Alexander, the breaking of a link
going up t lie mountain caused immediate
alarm, and the first impulse of those who
understood the situation was lo "quittrav
cling on that train" at once.
Most fortunately the train, vhicli was
thought to be going tip the mountain at a
high rate of speed, stopped its upward pro
gress within one length of itself, and there
it stood on that fearful declivity, oyer six
hundred feet to the bottom of the ravine,
and ten milts up from the foot of the grade,
w ith Kittannlug point, or "horse shoe bend,"
mid-way, before reaching which, if the train
had not been checked, would have attained
the speed of a mitinie ball and have left the j
track at that curve like a living machine,
and in all probability not one of thb passen
gers wou'.d have been living to-day. The air
brakes, however, better known as "The
Westinghousi; Atmospheric Brake," clasped
the wheels like a vise this moment tho pres-
sure from tho engine had been taken away I
and the train was saved from destruction by
tois seemingly simple appliance, but what
has proved to be a inagmticent triumph of
modern skill. The passengers were detained
but a short time and were landed iu Pitts
burgh "on time." Pittsburgh. 1'ost.

EntTOit Freeman Dear .St';-: As there
was a very sail accident occurred hers on
the 2il iust., an. I as I hays seen no notice of
it in any of the. Cambria county papers, I
thought I would send you the particulars,
especially as the victim was an old citizen
of Northern Cambria. The facts are these:
Mr. l'eter Flanagan, while on a visit to his
son-in-law, in the vicinity of whoso resi
dence he has been employing himself prun
ing fruit trees, was struck by the engine of
the West l'enu Express and so terribly in
jured that ha died in about forty miuut-ts
after the accident, llo- had come to see tas
wife, but she had died and was buried be
fore his arrival. Just five weeks afterwards
lie too was called away by death in a most
sudden and shocking manner. His acre was
seventy-one yoars and that of his wife seventy-three,
aud both were old residents of
your county. Thir remains now lie side
by side iu the Catholice cemetery at Blairs
ville. May they rest in pttaca.
