Til E MANIAC SEA CAPTAIN
The following thiilling ciicuinsf ances
arc derived from tho history of the New
York m.'triiio :
On abiijjht morning in October IM:4,
an 'American packet sh:p iu t'.u Liverpool
trade left the anchorage in 'be borer bay
of New York, and went on her cay to the
fie.i. She was deeply laden with an assort
ed cat go, but being a staunch, fat ship,
ai.d having expoi ienccd otlieeiH ai:d a fuii
crew, it was expected that her voyage
wiilii be safuly anl speedily pei formed.
Captain Jlenson. the comm.atder, w.isan
"id sc.i dug," as the saying is. Hoy :md
man, he had .spent the best poitiun of his
life un the ocean, and tbeiv was uo captain
tailing out of port who was i t yarded as
inure thoroughly reliable in eveiy particu
lar, lie was now, however, advanced in
years, and lie declared that after a few
mote voyages he would tetiie. I!e had
made money, and besides interests in otln r
vessels, owned one half of the ship which
he commanded, i Hn ii.tr the previous voy
age there were some prculiai it ics in his j
conduct which 'aliiitctcd tho attention of'
his mates, and was mentioned t t.he agents; 1
but noLiiing further was thought of it. I
The gallant ship passed Sandy Hook, t
and when v.ell off the shore the pilot left j
her. The wind was fair and every bail was j
up, and a w illing crew were putting every- ;
thing in order for ocean navigation. When ;
ihe pilot went over the side he remarked :
"Captain llenson, I will report you as hav- !
iny a fair wind, and going like a racer.'' !
-y. ;y," shouted the captain ; "lot a'l I
New oik stand by and look. I'm bound ;
to beat everything that floats or ever will '.
lioat. Look out for .r.y report from Liver
pool or from the bottom cf tic Atlantic I ';
don't know which, lla, ha. ha!''
The language, its tone, ai:d tho laugh, i
were all so strange that the pdot could not
help tinning to give a look of su-piise at
tho face of the captain. This was all,
however, and the next moment he was in
his boat, tossing air.id the wnves, while 1
the ship's sails, under orders from the cap- i
tain, were again tilled, and t-I.e fairly i'zw
on her way.
The captain of a vessel is a lung at sea.
His onk-is iire law, an.l any intet fvrence
with him or them Is mutiny a crime pun-i.-hable
with death. Hence it can be seen .
that when the other oibcers of this New ,
York packet found Captain Benson saying
and doing very strange and dangerous
things, they had little else to do but sub
mit and obey. This course of action began
hs soon as the pilot left, i:id it continued
increasing f;o:u day to day. At length j
tht-y bee. one convinced that he was either
actually insane or bordering upon it. By
his ordt-i s sail was kept on his hip to a myst
alarming extent. She was driven not only
over but through the monster waves. Great
mountains of water fell upon her decks,
and it frequently seemed as if she. woiod :
not again iie to the surface. There was
u great strain upon the hill, and the r.i'Us I
bent and twisted like reeds. Sails and '
Kpars were blown away, but again and j
again came oiders from the captain to re- '
pair damages and set the sails anew. The !
oflieers were in the greatest, distress of
mind, and the crew were muttering and i
thieateuiiig to go in a body to the captain
and remonstrate in legard to this state of
a lairs. But. still no one dared to act, fear- :
i-ig tho terrible conseipiencees of a conflict
with the commander. 1
Captain Benson said little to anybody,
except to issue ciders, lie looked pale. :
a id h'n ees had the dead, glassy look ob
ivalde in those affected with insanity.;
He walked the cabin and deck with hands
-;.,.! h;al. a;uj a-L intervals muttered to
"luglied. It w:w a fact that
;. 't he malad. had been
C on him for Some time. and
a- Kiaking it more deei-
dtd ami ui.coiit rotable. For ton days the j
ship had been navigated by a madman. j
One afternoon the weather looked very I
threatening, and it was evident there was
to be a seveie gale. Still the captain made, i
no preparation for it. In f.ct, he crowded j
ii:.ie sail on as the day advanced. Stand- J
ing on the deck he shouted : '-You tea j
dogs, put on every rag. Winds, blow '
blow blow! We are going no faster than
a New York lighter. Look alive, men. '
Ha, ha, ha! JNott she juir.jis. Blow, ye
winds blow, blow!''
The sail was put on. It was the order
of the commander, and to it-fuse might be
death. The uhipnuhed on v aril, with her
hud shiveiing to the very keel and her
masts threatening to snap asunder.
"Ha, ha, ha!" laughed the captain, as
he la-hed himself to the 1 ail, for there was
danger of his being washed overboard.
'Captain P.enson," said the first mate,
coming up with a serious countenance,
the wind is increasing, and we are going
to have a heavy blow. It is the jndgmeiit
of all your ollictis that sail should be taken
in, i.ot made."
'ir," said the captain, with a wild
glance, '-1 know my business and my duty;
and you are a set of cowards, and do not
want to do the ship or the owners justice.
Sh is no harbor lighter no coaster but
an ocean racer, llegone, sir. to your duty.
1 -hall not take in any sail. Ha, ha, ha!
P.low. ye winds blowblow!"
A crisis was st hand. On 011 Hew the
ship. The clouds grew black and blacker
the sea looked w'.ld ar. 1 ugly. Dowu
went the ship into the vortex, and then she
lose, shaking the torrents of water from
her. C rush again on her de.spe.rate way.
A short consultation of the office is was
he'd, the result of which was communica
ted to the crew who received it with a
cheer. The tirst mate then gave an oider,
L;ch was rcpoited, and in an instant the
crew set about taking in sail. As soon as
the captain saw it he began to gesticulate
fearfully, and cried out 'Mutineers ! vil
liins! I'll hang every one of you ! At your
peiil take in a single sail ! Come down oa
deck, I hav !"'
With wild screams and threats he hasti-
jy loosened lumxcir from the rail, and star- I
id for the caLia. All knew that Le was!
going to arm himself. Consequently two j
of the mates intercepted and seized" him.
In a moment none he was securely bound, j
What little reason there was left, de- ;
parted forever from this moment. His !
n-rcams, oaths, threats and laughter were ;
heard above the roaring wind, lie ru"-
gled until completely exhausted, and then
lay with his glaring eyes wide open.
Ill ship Mas taken fafely into port
tinder Ihe command of the first mate. The
action with tho captain was fully recog
nized as projer and opportune for the sal
vation of the ship and all on board. Cap
tain Benson was taken back on her return
t .if.v York in a most dangerous condi
tion of madness, and was consigned on her
anival to an asylum. He was confined
fov borne five year, when he died. At his
most lucid intervals he imagined himsvlf
on las ship, carrying all sail, but he was
generally violent, and had to be kept under
fcevcre restraint.
Oct west recently, a girl hacked out of
her marriage encasement rvhen the minis
ter got to the houso. The blidegroom
wasn't of the luoken hesuted kind. He
turned to tho assembled ladies ami said ;
"If there's any other gal here that'll oc
cupy this vacant situation, I'm hci'n."
Up jumped the sister of the ldy who had
declined to be a bride, saying. "Count
me tn.- Proceed, old textslinger, with the
je: formanco, I ain't a feared." And the
cnrcmoiiy was performed to the delight of
the iof m and company.
