A curious incid&nt occurred at Alsip's
new saw mill :n Bedford county, a short
time ago. As a large cucumber log was
being sawed through the centre, the saw
struck a small chain that was in the heart
of the log. The chain was four or five
inches long and had a staple attached to it.
The log was about eighteen feet long and
twenty-live or thirty inches in diameter.
It was on the farm of Mr. Nathan Leo, of
Bedford township.
Mrs. nettie Johnston, of West Hun
tingdon, one day last week, says tho Jour
nal, placed amas of taffy in the lower part
of her stove to warm, and went away ; in
the meantime some one noticed that it
was getting boiling hot, and removed it to
a table. Mrs. Johnston coming in and
that then and there, with "malice prepense,"
