The "Curse of O'Kelley," though occa
sionally alluded to, has peihaps never been
seen in print by a great majority of our
readers. Carmac O'Kelley, the celebrated
Irish harper-, went to Doneraile. jn the coun
ty of Cork, where his watch was pilfered
from his fob. This so raised his ire that
ho embalmed the peoplo of that place in
the following
"SIKISI; OF CTRSES."
Alas '. how dismal is my tale :
I lost my watch in Ooneraile
Mv Dublin watch, my chaiu and seal (jwfe),
l'ilfered at once in Doneraile.
May f r and brimstone never fail
To fall in showers on Doneraile ;
Mav all the leading fiends assail
The thieving town of Doneraile ;
As lightnings flash across the vale,
So d.wu to hell with Doneraile ;
Thu fate of l'uinpey- at I'harsaie,

Mar beef or mutton, lamb or veal (re),

On ragged, rotten Doneraile ;

To beam their light on Doneraile; -k

' May no sweet cuckoo, thrush, or quail

May protit small and tardy sale

May fame resound a dismal tale

May Egypt's plagues at once, prevail
To thin thH knaves at Doneraile ;
May frost and snow, and sleet and hail,

Xt'e gather from our exchanges that the
potato bug has begun its aptiual ope rat ions;
that the Hies are going to be a greater pest
than ever; that the season is to be an ex
traordinary one for the development of thc
mos.piito; aud that gt asshcj i ers aie eat
ing everything up in the west. Plans in
numerable are suggested for the extermin
ation of these pests, but none as yet seems
to haveVouud favor. These things must be
expected to come in with the tummer sea
son, which would lose half of its interest
niiiioutiiitiu. iie.itici pest tia j also made
its seasonable appearance, simultaneously
with the hogira to the watering places, and
that is the baggage smasher against whose
depredations a wail of agony is going up
from one end of the country to the other.
This monster has developed into a creature
of extraordinary destructiveness and defies
extirpation. We read of one whose haunt
is between Philadelphia and Cape May,
who, it is claimed, can take a Saratoga
trunk by the handle and pull the entire &ide
out without a seeming effort, and go about
his business as though he were not the least
bit proud of his achievement. L'nfortu- i
nately for him, the owner of the trunk was
seized with a frenzied ambition to pull this
baggage smasher's cars off, and had uearly
succeeded when he was interrupted. We
are very sorr he w as not permitted to con
tinue, as he might thereby have discovered
the long-desired remedy against the further
encroachments of this untiling and devoted
encourager of the trunk trade.
A coiiKEsrosDEST of the Scientific Amerr
ican commends onious as a specific against
epidemics not as an esculent, but sliced
and kept in a sick-room, w here they will
absorb any atmospheric poison. They
should be replaced by fresh ones every hour.
Ic is noticed that in the room of a small
pox: potient they will blister and decom
pose very rapidly, but will prevent tlie
spread of the disease. Their application
has also proved effective in the case of
snake bites.
