W. L. A. Mr. Fditoi: The experience of former County Conventions has fully demonstra ted the impossibility of keeping the dele gates in the Court room after the impor tant nominations have been made. All in terest in tho fin ther proceedings of the con vention is then cast aside aud delegates, as well those who are pleased as those who are dissatisfied w ith the result as far as as certained, leave the room some returning at intervals, but many r.nt again putting in an appearance. The consequence is, that some- of the nominations are made by a minority instead of a innjority of the con vention. There is a sure and effective remedy for the cure of this evil. A German named John Farly, a resi dent of Conemaugh borough, died very suddenly, on Saturday night last, under circumstances which induced the belief that he had been poisoned, aud that too by his own wife. A coroner's inquest was held and the deceased stomach taken ou and sent to Fittsburg for analjbis, and in tho meantime tho suspected woman has been left to come and go as she pleases. A married man named William Huff, and a "grass widow" named Angelina Da is, vee llayneR, eloped together from Jolniktown, on Wednesday night of last week, the former leaving a sickly wife and four children unprovided for, and the latter leaving many relatives and friends to blush for her infamous conrfuc'. The arrest of Huff in Cincinnati has been an nounced, but the report lacks confirma tion. John Boylan, tho young man whose arrest and subsequent tiial and conviction before the U. S. District Court at Fitts burgh on the charge of cutting open a mail bag at Cresson has already been noted in these columns, was on Friday last sen tenced to one year's imprisonment in the Western Feuitentiaiy. lioylau's age is a little past sixteen years, which prevented him from being Bent to the House of Ucf tige instead of the Feuitentiaiy. Geo. W. Lloyd, jr., and Wm. Baum, of Susquehanna township, found guilty hist w eek on tw o indictments for receiving stolen goods, were sentenced, on Monday evening last, to pay a line ?10 and costs, and undergo one year's imprisonment in the Western Fenilcntiary on each indictment; und Martin Oaks, of same township, con victed of larceny, was sentenced to pay a fmo of $20 and costs, and undergo two years' imprisonment in the same institu tion. Horace Atkins, tho lad whom we no ticed last week as having sustained a sc servo fracture of his right leg, caused by falling from a wagon loaded with lumber, and being caught under one of tlio wheels and dragged for some distance, died at the residence of his parents in the Fast U ard. about 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning last, from lock-jaw, the result of his severe in juries. His age was about 9 years, and he, was a bright and promising lad. The af llictcd parents have our sympathies. A Gallitziu correspondent sends tho Altoona Tribune the following item: "Mr. GiUou, of this place, is the owner of a piece of paper money of the value of twenty bhillings. This script was issued in accoidance with a provision of a resolu tion of the Assembly of Fennsylvania, pasted November 18, 17T."i, that being the sixteenth year of the reign of George 111, Kinsr of Filmland. It is dated phia, December S, 1775, and is Messrs. Kcnleer, Grillith, and Leach ! is a ceimine document, and llarrisburg, on that morning. Later ad vices by mail inform us that tlie unfortun ate man's head was almost severed from his body, and the presumption is that both a freight and passenger train had passed over his neck some time during the night. The deceased had escaped from the State Lunatic Asylum two days pre vious, ai d a search had been instituted for him by the officers of the institution, but without avail. It is thought he was try ing to make his way home when overtaken by the fearful accident which so tragically ended his joyless life. The remains were brought here and interred in Lloyd ceme tery yesterday afternoon. The careless ness which permitted his escape from the asylum, where he was taken for safe keep ing, has elicited considerable comment in this community, and an explanation from the authoriUcK of that institution, if they have any to make, would seem to be called for. We are glad to learn that a good oil strike has recently been made near Fetro lia, IJutlcr county, by a company of Cam bria county gentlemen, prominent among whom is our patron and friend, Mr. Jas. D. Flummer, of Summerhill, Croyle town ship, the other members being 1. W. Luke, Dr. John Luke and Flias Faul, of the same place. It is not known, as yet, what the capacity of the well really is, but enough is knoKvn to indicate that it will prove what is termed a good paying well, Und we are sure we are glad to note the success of the gentlemen named, who well doservo the good luck that has befallen them. A young man in our neighboring town of Indiana, seduced a young lady, under j promise of marriage, more than two years ago, and left suddenly for the West, in or der to escape the consequences of his vil lainy. A half brother of the injured lady procured a requisition from Governor Geary, and following the fellow for two years, liually captured him at Lincoln, Ne braska, a couple of weeks ago. Ho re turned with his prisoner last week, aud had him put under bail for trial. ceeding, the followincr would be the order of 'business and nominations: 1st. The election of a delegate to the State Conven tion. 2d. The election of Ihrte conferees to choose a Sdiiatoiial delegate to the State Convention. 3d. Thu election of a Chair man of the Fxeeutivc County Committee. -1th. The nomination for County Auditor. 5th. Coroner. Oth. Foor House Director. 7th. County Commissioner. Sth. Treasu rer. !tth. Sheriff. 10th. Assembly. I recommend this matter to the serious consideration of the Convention, and trust that a resolution of the kind indicated will be adopted. As no possible harm can re sult from it, but much substantial benefit, it ought not to encounter any opposition. A Fou.;ku Dki.ku A'l'id. Mr. EniTon Although the ofiiee of County Auditor is licit generally regarded as of much consequence, it is really one of very great importance, and requires a first rate man intelligently to discharge its duties. It in an cilice of honor and not of profit, and one which no man in tho county ought to be ashamed to fill, or re fuse to furcnpt. lt t.lioi--f.i-?, t-o Ikt hoped that the next County Convention, in the selection of a candidate, will not act hastily, but with due deliberation. I want to see a Board of County Auditors assemble next January which can dis charge its duties iriihout the aid andait anee of a clerk, as has been tho case for some years past. The Auditors have no legal light to employ a clerk at the ex pense of the county. If they cannot per form their duties, and are compelled to have a clerk, they ought to pay him them selves tint of their own salaries. The nomination by the County Convention of a man of sound judgment and good cleri cal qualifications will obviate the necessity of and remove the excuse for the appoint ment of a clerk, fourth Auditor. Trilling as the matter may appear to somo persons, it is nevertheless one in which the people of the county have a deep interest, and ought therefore to be carefully considered and judiciously disposed of by the Con vention.
