ferocious and ungi annua ticstl message cre
ated quite a stir at the hotel, only surpassed
by that at a horse-race or a dog-light. The
nicor who dcliverd the message was asked
the reason for the Mayor's sudden and un
just decision. His reply was, "there i" t
no use in asking old Briars for reasons.

ou see his second wife died about two
l iwnths ago, and some darned old fool has
made him believe that her fust husband,
v ho was an Irishman, is keeping her in
purgatory out o' pure cussedno-ss."
"I'll fix up his spiritual affairs for him in
a few minutes," exclaimed Martiuo stall
ing for tho Mayor's grocery with a merry
tv-irkle iu his eyes denoting success of mis
chief. Ho was followed by as motley a crowd as
was ever about a circus wagon, and many
of the men, while regretting that th show
was not allow ed to open, still declared that
'twas useless to try to induce old Briars to
chango an opinion once given.
Martino courteously listened to all that
was said, and believing only a small jor
tiou, urged himself forward and entered
the grocery just as the village dignitary
was trying to blow into flame a smoulder
ing smudge, in the corner of a large and
old fashioned fire-place.
Just as tho old fellow was in the act of
rising from his hands and knees, and as-f-nining
an upright jiosilion, there came
down from tho w reaths of black curling
smoke in tho old chimney, a wailing, emi
jiino voice exclaiming :
'Oh 1 Dan'l ! Uaii'l 1 For tho lovo of
lira veil, and the lovo you once pledged to
me, fail not to sec the California magician j
ttud have him perform an incantation on j
the ruling spirit of the 'Aiuth S; te,' or
1 perish in.purgatory."
Old Briars trembled as if dying with the
ague, and scrambling to his feet ho in
quired between his chattering teeth ;
"Is z z z z z 7. that you, Molly?"
"Alas, it is too true !" faintly replied the
piteous voice in the black chimney.
"llire Martiuo to invoke the aid of tho
genii goddess that governs his Jtap'c FLuic
ern, and he can prevent the fiendish perse
cutions which I am dialy, almost hourly,
receiving from wicked Mike."
"It's a dommid lie !" growled in hoarse
Irish accents, a voice half-suffocated with
the dense smoke. "It's a doomed lie I I
nivor put her in purgatory at all. at all.
She got there by her own cussed temper,
a:id if I was in your place, I'd let her ret
there till the devil has biuned off her last
toe nail."
"Oh, my Cod! my God ! what shall I
do?" groaned old Briars, trembling till his
l-oot heels rattled on tho old hearthstone
like sticks on a drum head.
'Pity ! O, have pity!" exclaimed the
troubled spirit in a voice that fairly wepc
with pathos and tenderness.
The crowd stood awe-stricken with min
gled emotions of wonder, sorrow, astonish
ment and reverence. They had all heard
the secret and thrilling dialogue each felt
himself almost in tho presence of Death
himself, and many were moved to sympa
thetic tears at seeing the old man broken
down by fear and heart-gushing sorrow.
To remove the deep embarrassment which
had now become really oppressive, Mr. Mar
tiuo politely stepped forward, and intro
ducing himself in the fewest words possi
ble, e.xpiessed great pleasure on havmgen
tercd the room at a moment so very opior
tune, and inquired if his professional s.-rvi-
ces would be required.
Staring at the magician with bloated face
and swollen eyes the Mayor inquired, "Are
you in league with any ruling power in the
world ?"
"Oh, DanT. Dan'l!" pleaded the suffer
ing voice in the chimney, "don't insult the
magic prir.ee with selfish questions, hut
give him at once a hundred dollars, and
have my soul released from puigatoiial
Full'ervngs."
In the agony of despair the old fellow
opened his pocket-book and commenced
counting out a pile of dirty greenbacks,
iv hen Martino exclaimed
'Nver mind about the hundred dollars,
my good sir ; mako me out a license for
this evening's cntei tainment and I viill
render you all the aid in my power for
nothing."
The old fellow grabbed a pen and hastily
wrote "This is to suititi Mr. Martino shall
hav the town hall and lisens this evening
without cost, as 'tis paid for."
l'lacing the document in his pocket, Mar
tino stepped to the old fire-place and throw
ing upon the embers some powder from a
gold anntt-Dox, tne room liisi-.miiy uvcniuv
Idled with a smoky vapor having all the
bright hues of the rinlow. Suddenly
there caoae a harsh crashing of voices in
the cbinmoy followed by a choir of chil
dren's voices singing
"Cherry berry be, cherry berry bo.
Away the evil spirits go I
Away they go! away they gol
Away the evil spirim go I
Then after a moment's silence, the freed
spirit eeemed to come down into the room
and pass out at the doorway, sweetly sing
ing, ; fainter and fainter, as it passedaw ay
toward the setting sun
"Cherry berry be, cherry berry bo.
At last in away 1 gol

The awe-stricken crow J were as much
bewildered aivd impressed with the awful
calamity of the 6ceno as was old Briars
biinself, and the oft repeated tale from so
many eonsipiug ton true 3 s aroned tne al
ready excited public, that the old hall on
that evening was crowded by the largest
audience ever assemblec in lie town
In a prominent seat the serene and
delicrhted Mayor. Hothing escaped his at
tention or applause. He seeme l to be so
. overjoyed at the release and happiness of
the spirit of his second wife that his mind
ww entirely above and beyond the effect of
- any earthly discord
lie seemed, however, to awaken as from
a confused dream as the andienco roso to
leave tho room at tho end of the perform-
. ance, for ho looked back at Mr. Martiuo
through hi long and shaggy eyebrows and
exclaimed in half whimpering accents, as
he ran his fingers through his shaggy locks:
"Ifcoginto expect that that mysterious
