We see a riuss case, a three
bat-ed clock, four feet wide at tl.e I.rst

is placed in the lir-t st, x . .on lour delicate
o.U., within which swrn-s the untiriiift
rei d.-'u"i. which is in the M-mticant form
of a hee hive. Ik-hind the pendulum there
is a picture it prescntiu; mature manhood
tounu jinan behind his plough. The
four comers are carved, and represent the
four periods of life infancy, youth, man
hood and age. The spaces to the ri-htand
left of the clock are ornamented with two
oil paintings, representing the spring time
of life, (children playing in a gadrcn. and
the autumn or ei;d of life (grave diggers in
a cemetery.
Tlm Kei-tViiil fitorv consists of two tower- I
like palaces on the doors of which there J
hie two pifuuca that represent l.oylioor
aud early manhood. In the one a boy is
juMt pushing his little bark away from the
shore, lie stands upright iu this boat, a:id
points to the distance : he is about to begin
hfo "to paddle his own canoe." In the
oilier a young man, who has already tiif.de
Home, progiess in the journey of Hie, enters
a, ioom in which theie is an hourgluss, that
reiainds hhTi "of the lhetness of time. On
this story there are three guardian angels.
.A. majestic tower crowns as third sun-y,
the ingenious structure. Acock, as a sym
bol of watchfulness, stands on the top, di
rectly over the portal, which opens the
tower in front. On this portal there is a
painting which represents the perishable
of earthly things. The entire struc
ture is, in appearance, very much like an
old Gothic castle.
Now let us fee if we can describe the
mechanical action of the clock. W heu it
inarms the first quarter, the d.orof the lefb
piece of the second story opens, aud we see
child issue from the background, come
fo .lid to a little bell, give it one blow,
H.id then disappear. At the st-cond quar
ter a youth appears, strikes the bell twice,
a. .J Lhcu he disappears ; at the third there
Cuics a man in his prime ; at the fouiih
tc have a tottering old man, leaning on a
tsau. w ho strikes t lie bell four times. Kach
lone the door closes of itself. When the j
Jioui-s arc full, the door of the right piece
of tlie stcond story opens, and Death, as a
skeleton, scythe in Jinud, : pilars :uit marks
the hour by striking a beii. But it is at
tno twelfth hours that we have the grand
spectacle iu the representation of the day
of judgment. Then, when Death has struck
three blows on the little bell, the cot k on
the top of the tower suddeuly lhij s his
wind's and crows in a shrill tone; and after
Death has marked the twelfth hour with
his hammer, he crows again twice. 1m-
mediately three angels, who stand as guar-
tiiiins in a central I osition, raise their trum- j
pets with their right hands (iu the left they j
hold swords i, and blow a blast toward each
of the four yuarters of the earth. At the j
last blast the door of the tower opens, and j
the resuriectcd childien of earth appear, ;
