PrATii on the Had.. Frightful Acci
dent near Mifflin. We glean t he 'follow ing
1 artieulais eif a terrible accident near Mif
Hin from Saturday's issue of the Harris
burg Patriot :
Owing to the immense travel on the "Penn
sylvania railroad the Cir.cinniMi express
east, has to be divided into t wo t cetioes, the
one runmrjj about ten mile behind the'oth
er. Ou Thursday night the first section
started from Altoona thirty-seven minute
late and the secemd, one hour and sixteen
minutes, whiih placed the former about
t w-f-nty miles ahead of he latter. Iletween
Altoona and L-w:stow n the second section
made up thirty-four minutes lost time, while
the first lost three minutes. At Kixler's sta
tion, two miles east of lewisti vvn, loth took
water, and before leaving the tiaiuan of the
leading train placed the precautionary per
cussion caps on the track as a warning to
the one following. The ei.f inee r of the lat
ter respected the signal, but seeing no train
before him and supposing it many miles in
advance he resumed his speed. As the first
section approached M ;fllin it sla'-kened from
schedule tipeed to ahcut fifteen miles an
hour. Just west of the town is l.anlier's
curve, and while passing thremgh it the
engineer ef the second section of the ex
presn noticed that the first section was but
1.r)0 feet, ahead. The pr.tent air brak was
immediately applied and the engine reversed
and had it nrt lieen for an unavoidable acci
dent to the coupling which held together tho
express car and the one following the train
could have been stopped in lime to avert
contact with the first section. lint the coup
ling hrok, and the locomotive.- tender and
express ear were detached from the other
ears (the air brake lieing operative on the
latter) and ran into the roar end of a Pull
man palace car, iu which two gentlemen,
two ladies and two children were sleeping.
The engine struck with much violence and
sent tho car whizzing through about one
third of the sleeper directly ahead, tele scop
ing the two. The consequence, was the
berths in the rear end of the letter were
badly demolished and five of the occupants
tightly wedged in, and it is supposed instant
ly, while three sustained slight injuries. Of
the fatal cases, "NV. W. Ihuitz, wife and a
iienutitul little child occupied one berth and
Matthew Knowles and J. Wilhmi Bacon, of
Chicago, separate berths. The names of the
wounded are Thomas M. Say re and wife, of
Elizabeth, New .Jersey, and C II. l'eioy, of
Indianapolis. None of the inmates of the
rear car were hurt, but Mr. Oillingham, the
conductor, was thrown a considerable dis
tance. The porter, a young colored man,
was sleeping in the rear end at the time the
engine struck, and th cemcussion did no
more tl & i arouse h".m '"rem his sleep. A
gentleman and lady occupying a Iwrth at
the other end were surrounded with broken
Timbers (fragments of the wreck), but they
were not injured in the least.
The persons killed in the second hind ear
were extricated with considerable difficulty,
a few hrmrs ('lapsing before the debris could
r-c removed from its entrenched positirnand
the dead readied. Mrs. D.intz's body was
more mui ilatetl than an y of the rest. Broken
bones were numerous in all the corpses.
Mis. Sayre, one of the wounded, was
obliged to endure some pain ami mm h sus
pense before she could be removed from a
very trying position. It appears she was
preparing to retire when the run in took
place, ami while sittiugor standing the ttoor
was torn up and her leg was caught h-t ween
the wootl. From the time her situation was
discovered entil her rescue over an hour
elapsed, ard in order to get out the limb the
rear car hail to be lifted up wilh jar ks.
Those who ac" !sted in freeing her were agree
ably surprised to hear her say that her inju
ries were immaterial and then walk oil' as if
scan elr anything happened h.-.-r.
Mr. Sayre was slight ly cut in th head and
had on- of h'.s hands "bruised, while Mr.
Kemy was hurt in the fool and sustained
several bruises.
The bodies of Matthew Knowles and J.
Wiliard Bacon were s-nt to Chicago last
evening, anil Mr. Blaine, speaker of th" na
tional house of representatives, hart tele
graphed the Pennsylvania raTlroad company
that he Tiili give "instructions as to what
disposition shall le made for the remains of
the Dantz fi-.mi'y. Mr. Pant 7. is either a con
gressman elector a United States revenue
officer.
An inquest was held over the bodies yes
terday in J unii.ta county, whith resulted in
a verdict of censure on the tlngman of the
first section of the Cincinnati express.
The loss by the wreck of the two l'nl'man
palace cars 'will probably reach ?-J,0i'.
The engine attached to the second section
had her pi let broken ami was slightly dam
aged otherwise. About three hours after
the accident it started with the train for
JIarrisburg.
The reason the first section ran behind
schedule speed waH because the requisite
quantity of steam could not be generated
with the inferior coal used. It is said that
gootl fuel could net be produced because of
the obstacles thrown iu the way by the hoise
disease.
TltE CAUSE OF THE CATASTROPHE.
An examination has been commenced t
Harrisbnrg to ascertain tho causes which led
to the drradful accident detailed above.
From the Jonrval we learn that Mr. FirzgT
ald, the flagman of the first tra;.n, set forth
that a few minutes before the collision, and
when the train had pasi"-d about two-thirds
over a two-mile piece of track west eif Mifflin
he observed the second train cemiing, and
swung a red light as a warning signal, which
he f"lt sure was observed by the engineer,
as the speed eif the second train appeared to
slacken. The firt train broke a coupling
juet before the accident.
The engineer of the second train, Mr. .Tohn
Frilihey, stated that when In r-a.-Lod t!ie
two miles of straight track west of MiClin,
he watched for the rear of the first train.
Just as he struck the straight stretch, the
head-light of an approaching freight train on
the left hand track reflected in such a man
ner that he saw no red light at all ahead.
When he had passed the third curve be
beyond, he saw the rear end of the first train,
immediately shut off steam, applied the air
brake mill reversed the engine, but the rr"
liient tun was sueh that when the coupling
broke between the tender and the first car
of his train, he could not stop the onward
course eif his locomotive lu time to prevent
the aceid:it. He had not the slightest idea
that the first traiu had lost time since leav
ing the last station, until his locomotive was
alout to strike it
Mr. Fritchey is one of the oldest, and is
considered one of the most cautious engi
neers on the road.

of politit ai journalism, is merely giving ex

who are familiar with its able anel instruct

in laying before its readers the lrtest and

inhabitable globe. As the admitted organ
of the Democratic ptrty it is invaluable to
the iKilitician, and although on some occa
sions its views ha ve not at the time met with
an unqualified endorsement, they have been
treated with that consideration and respect
to whi h their high source entitled them.
The terms of The Would, esnecially when

and we cheerfully recommend to all Domo

transpiring in the world around them the
propriety of getting up clubs for the weekly

fr. liaitor. Please allow me to say a few
words through your valuable paperin regard
to the wide west, as 1 hope they may prove
interesting to inany of your readers. I know
that there are many farmers in Cambria
county and elsewhere who would be willing
to pell out ami emigrate to the west if the3'
could do so, and I don't blame them for this,
because they have hard work the whole year
round toiling among st ump and stones, ami
when harvest comes round have little to

where is the b -st place to go to in the west?
Some prefer Wisconsin, some Iowa, some
Minnesota, and so on, ad IMtum. For my
part I would rather go to Nebraska, inas
tiim h as 1 consider it the most desirable and
healthiest State in the west to live in. It is
unquestionably the best wheat producing
State in the Uuiou. Some affirm that Min
nesota is better, but if you will examine the
statistics from U.tti States you will see that
Minnesota produces only an average yield
of 17 to HO bushels to the acre, while Ne
braska averages from ii5 to .'JO bushels. Of
corn the former gives an average product eif
I'O to 30 bushels per acre, while the latter
shows a yield of 50 to 75 bushels, i have this
from reliable figuers, to which I have given
considerable attention, and hence it is that.
1 am decidedly of the opinion that Nebraska
is by far the b"st State for a poor man to
settle in. There is plenty of vacant govern
ment land stiil left to give all a pick and
choice of location, to say nothiug of railroad
lauds, which can be bought cheap and en
long credits, but if any ene who reads this
has any notiou of going to Nebraska, my
advice is go along the Cnion Pacific 11. 11.
tie f ire deciding upon a location. . lt parses
through the finest region, in toy estimation,
that the eyes of man ever rested upon. I
bought 160 acres from that Company in
Marrick county, at a place called Chapman's
Station, lt is lietween Lone Tree and Grand
Island, which are both towns of much im-portaue-e
and great promise. IT would please
me exceedingly to get a colony from Cam
bria county to settle in that locality, and if
one was formed, I would go with it at al
most auy time and on the shortest notice.
Nebraska in destined to be among the
foremost States of the Union, as in th mat
ter of health and productiveness it is cer
tainly uusurpassed ; ami as regards the cli
mate, it is not too cohl in winter nor too
warm iu summer. Any person w ishiug to
visit that country should procure tickets
from Pittsburgh to Omaha, and from there
take the Union Pacific to Lone Tree, Mer
rit k county, Nebraska.
