had married his sifter some six weeks be
fore. Mr. Dye's .statement was so dear
and i-atisf.utory that it removed the last
doubt concerning the guilt of the prisoner,
and made assurance doubly sure.
He said that Linitie Rogers was the
widow of Judge William J. lb gers. a
prominent lawyer of Lonoke. Arkansas,
who dud shout" three years ago. He left
her at his decease considerable real estate
and some leady money, whkh gave the
ladva fair suj'jtoit : but iuoidcr to increase
her revenue she oj rmd a boa :d in; -house,
which, together with her other resources,
made hehuancial condition very comfort
able. In June last a stranger speared in
Lonoke, who called himself tl. W. Majors,

with Mrs. liogers. iejresentt d himself a
widower of three years standing, and at
once ttegan paving his addresses to the

Majors now began talking of a fine farm
he owned in Tennessee, and tho necessity
of bis returning to look afier the growing
crop. Hi victim w;u easily j.ersuaded to
sell a nun. Wi of her lots, which produced
about sUMKi in cash, lease the balance for
a term of years, and go with him to his
distant home. They sta-.tcd in a two-horse
wagon, atal were traced as far as a point
near Jennings Loud, where. a has aiready
Ih ou said, iiio wagon broke down. Next ;
dav. Martin having droi j.ed the "Maj.-rs" ,
;,, art iv( d at bis father-in-law's house.
and on the following Tuesday the body of
the unfortunate woman was disoncied in
the pond. The supposition is though we
believe the wretch made, no full confession
that lie decoyed her to the edge of the
water, killed her with a pistol shot, then t
thing the coiiso in. thinking it would im-j
mediately sink, and thus hide all traces of .

swiftly and silent'y away under the soft
rays of tb s-.imiuer moon, Maitin's voice
was heard in passionate appeals for mercy
that mercy which he himself had denied
to the loving, trusting woman he deceived
and murdered. Half an hour after a loud
vollcv roused tho echoes of the forest, tell
ing the crowd of anxiov.s listeners who sur
rounded the jail that all was over. Next
morning the body was found lying by the
roadside Iteneath the branches of a vener
able oak tree, pierced with not less than
frty bullet holes. The w oik of vengeance,
had licen thoroughly done. A i-:nr.ei-'s
