Simply he. ae.se the minds of tho pupils are not bent on study, hut, are roam ing over the hills, in a semi-clairvoyant state. I have known pupils iu hools -to spend four or five months in learning to add, sub tract, multiply and divide simple numbers a task that ought to ! accomplished in from four days to four weeks. And I have seen reading lessons assigned to pupils of one line to each, when pupils the same age will trauslatea'i;e,v,j onesin Latin. Ke.id ing is acquired, like a knowledge of music, by dint of pra. tice. Pupils should l:lVe dic tionaries at hand and should look for the meaning of all words they do not understand, and they t-hould not consider it a grievous task to do so. Little boys who study Latin have to turn the dictionary over a hundred times every day. Why cannot English be learned iu th same way? It is not for want ot time. Pupils h iveplentyof time tostn.lv, especially in winter. The long nights afford ample time to consult books, and the Uii" walks in the country to school afford time to think 1hc;r h ssons over and over a "ain. And this kind of study is of the heTilthful kind. Let body and mind take exercise at the same tine, and no injury is done to either, (ireat men and great scholars study more when exercising than at auy other time. Let the pupils of Cambria county make an effort next winter to excel themselves and to excel the children of all other counties around. Begin the first day of school. Have all the books ready, so that no time be lost. Keep at work from day to day. Laltor at night. Methodize the studies. Divide the time properly. Make a great. r effort each succeeding day, and work as hard all the time as people do ou their farms or in their shops. Teachers can aid pupils, but they cannot study for them. The effort to learn must 1m- on the part of the pupil, while the effort to te ich must be on the part of ths teacher. Let pupils spell the name of every thing they see; read a great deal; count and calculate, not only the problems in tlie books, but the areas of fields, the quantity of lum ber in a load of lumber, the number of cubic feet iu cellar walls, plastering, brick work, roofing, and everything that has length, or length and breadth, "or length, breadth and thickness. Do not stick to the hook, except to find rules. Think outside of the book, for it is thinking makes the scholar. P.OB TJoT. Ax I:;nrM.vx Oi'tr.vok A.
