A Gi-eal Victory for the Miners of Gal
litzin JUiatrict.
Mit. Editor The Kittanning Coal Company
of this place suspended work on tbe 16th of Jan
uary last, because the miners would not oou
sent to dig coal at a reduction of 10 cents per
ton. The miners bad only oneday given them
to consult over the matter, when they unani
mously agreed to juit work and appealed to
their fellow workmen todi vide their work with
them, which they honorably did with the ex
ception of the Uiair Iron and Coal Company.
The bosses backed down from the agreement
they had made with the miners. However, the
miners of the Kittanning Coal Co., raced the
torm. fool with all the scarcity or work, it ap
peal's that their bread multiplied, like tue
manna in the desert, because their cause was
just. On the let inst. the bosses of the Kittan
ning Coal Co., and the miners of said Company
entered into a settlement of the difficulties ex
isting between them the miners not only re
taining their former prices, but also leaking a
gain of 7 per eenf. over old rates. The miners
suffered considerably, vet they taught those
bosses a U strut that will not be forgotten for
some time. The great demand, however Tor
iron at present justities them in giving the
miners their just demands.
The miner- of Johnstown based their de
mand on the same principle as the miners of
Ohio that is, on thegreat raise in the prices of
iron in the market, which would afford the
miner one dollar per ton at the present time.
It the prices r iron had a downward tendency,
how soon the Johnstown Company would resort
to the lowering of miners' wages.
The miners or the Ulair Iron and Coal Co., of
Bennington district, arc still waiting with pa
tience, ex pecting that the Company will be as
liberal with them as they were wiih the Johns
town miners, and by so doing, it might save a
troublesome strike. I sincerely hope- that the
niair Iron and Coal Co. will not remain silent
niHnj days on this tpiestmn. If they do, it is
certain that the miners will mr.ke their demand,
in proportion to the r.dvunee ou iron, which
they would be justilied induing. That demand
niight not l e plcnstrg to the Ulair Iron und
Coal Co. I think, and I profess to know, how
the miners of Itennington district feel on the
(jucstiou. and I hope the Itlair Iron and Coal
Co. will concede portion of their profits to the
hard-working miners of Kenningion district,
wuo just now are digging coal at thirteen cents j
per ton ehei; per than any other miners work-j
mg oi: the four-foot rein, while, 1 am sorry to
say, which makes it worse with the Hci::iir.g-
ton miners, their vein of coal is not juite
three reet. I lope the Company will take all
these faetsinto consideration und save a strike.

A MASTF.nriKCK. -Those who can appre
ciate the mastei-touidi of the sculptor's chisel
have only to visJt I'niuii Cemetery and see tho
grand and massive monument erected last
Tuesday to the memory of tbe late Ebenezer
Williams, fat licr-in-law of Rev. T. R. Jones, of
this place. The stone stands bet ween 11 and 12
feet high, with four raised shields, while the
family nam-. Williams, standout in bold re
lief on the front of the shaft. The whole of
this m ignilicei.t inomitn-sit is of the very best
quality or beautiful Italian marble, ami de
serves to be ranked on auj eqality with the
workmanship ef the great Angelo. We need
hardly say that this beautiful monument, with
its rare original designs, is from the chisel of
that master sculptor Mr. John W. I.ogan of No.
l-i Franklin street, Johnstown. Indeed I.ogan
while here last week syetit more time among
the oV-id than he did among ihe living, as he
was busy all the time erecting monuments,
hendstones, etc. Those who patronize Logan
will save money, besides getting good work.
