Dear Freeman Every year for ten years
we have insisted upon having trees planted on
the Publia Square in Johnstown If they had
been planted ten ycais ago, we would" now
have thriving trees which would soou be cov
red with a profusion of vetd.ut Jeaves and
fragrant blossoms. Bui the Square is as bate
as the street yet. When will tbe council move
in the matter. If they would permit it, the
citizens themselves would plant the trees.

TWO U LA SOX 3 .
There are two strong reasons whv human
beings should not drink strvtig drinks. The
Gist is that man w as so created us to derive heat
from the continual struggle between the car
bon in the food he eats ut:d the oxygeu in the
air he breathes. He noeds no other stiuaulent.
Lsdiea can live without nriifici il stimulen'i.
Why cannot men ? The second reason is that
if it was right to drink pure drinks, it is cer
taluly wrong to drink the poisoned drinks that
ore now sold everywhere It ia not necessarv
to inquire who poisons these drinks whether
it is the manufuc'.urrr, the wholesale dealer, or
the retail gill vendor, it is enough to know
that every drink one buys has more or less poi
son in it, and some has enough in it to kill,
and some of it i)06 kill. If a person stops at
a hotel and sake for something to eat, ho would
expect that the victuals he pays fr weuld not
be poisoned. Why, then, should tbe public
submit to pisonc4 drinks? There should be
cuimical inspectors&ppiiuted to anilyie sam
ples ot ull the liquor that is offered for sale,
and tbuawwho sell poisoned drinks should tor
feil their licenses. If this were done this thing
of making three barrels out of one would cease.

one month. The drain upon the pocket-book

of the papers in question have been nskitijr for

seen that the "frauds and robberies" in other
counties, if there were any siren anywhere, far

Now of the seven counties above compared

of course iiothuijr wtouk could be done.
The Tribune Hunts lilit on a certain item
called Miscellaneous about tJ which the ed

t i il'unc like to have li&bt sulliclent to enable
him to seu on what the btnall "Miscellaneous,"'
amounting to 12,1.00, was expended in Indi

of the said "Mile whisky." l.ijcht was also
wanted so as to know who jrot tlie 204 dollais,

Well.it is easily explained thus : The Auditors
by mistake ch.uve'd the Treasurer with money
received from Collectors tMi more than he
hud received therefore the Treasurer was tlie
loser to that amount. Well, would any hone.it
man refuse to rectify a mistake 't Suiely not.
iSo the S2.J4 were retundod to tho Treasurer.
The Ti iliunc made a noise about the Military
1 und. inking ir "wnr or insurreeiioii existed in
tho iivi'rtli of Cambria county,'' that so much
fnoucy was needed? On rfmkiifr inquiry, the
writer tuts discovered, that Jeliiistowu must be
the place where the "war or insurrection" had
its existence, as over l.uuu of thw militarv fund
went to parties in that place. As regards the
otlice time made by the Commissioners l.mt
j iar, writer knows nothing; : but this much he
does know : Last year was the triennial for assessments,-
and it is well known that the Com
missioners revised them and altered every lim
ine in tbe assessment list making caleuia'tioiis
for every individual property, in order to make
a fair ratio. It was also the year for making
t he enumeration of I he taxable inhabitants for
apportioning the State ; also, tho new Jail, trv
ii to maka sale of Hoods', V Surely ail this
must have taken a great ileul of time. It is
also well known to a:l iu and around Ebens
bmx that the Commissioners worked often
from 7 o'clock in the inortun until 10 and 11
o'clock at night ; und would any liberal man
aliow that much time to go for one day at the

official whose name is tiaunted at the masthead
of the Trilmni'. and who attempted to charge
the county about 0 more fees tor oue term
of the District Court than the law allows him,
should not complain if tho Commissioners
char-red more than t2 for 15 or l'i hours' work,

A mountain steep cbove the plain nprcars

A hoary hermit manv a season dwelt.
