JoHssfoN, May 10, 1871. Dear Freeman ilr. Stemmer has finished his new house up in superb style - with- neat window shutters arid a splendid verauda. The entire house looks us clean a? a new pin. The Cambria lfor. Company a?e now en gaged in filling up the old canal, westward towards Coopersdale. The places that know us now here will soon know us no more forev tr, or we will not know them at least. Several persona in Johnslon, it is reported, are heirs to an estate in Germauy, worth $C3, 000,0'JO. They are now proving their title, and w ill soon reap the reward if it is reap.ible. A young man named Simon llecd, whose parents live in Keruville. was instantly killed, on Tacsday mori.ing last, on the Cambria Iron Company's railroad near the rolling mill. lie trus bi caking on the "Echo" train, and had got off the caia to turn a switch when he slipped nnd fell under tLe wheels, liis head .whs crushed to a jelly There is a talk again of s'ni ting a subscrip tion for a railroad from Johnstown to Somer set a very niuch needed improvement. On last Saturday we counted fifty new houses goinr up in Johnstown ai.d neighboring borough. This loots like improvement and protirtss. We hate received the copy of a new paper called "The Four Quarters,"' published in Philadelphia oy Messrs. J. Trainor King and CI. NeUon Smith. It is political ud literary and takes the democratic side of the question. We wish the editors sueciss. The Cambria Iron Company having bought out the right of i!r. Louis Luckhardt, our popular jeweler, has low ered his tluor3 on the first 6tory, so that any ptis'-n can go in and putchase jewelry without doiug any damage to their intellects'. Our Cambria borough neighbors by Home means got iuto their heads at the election last fall that una councilman should be elected lor one year, another for two years, and so on, and they tun the machine in that way. The mis take caused things to become considerably mixed in that borough, and the result has been that a special act providing lor the election of four councilcnen in that borough on the third Friday of thin month has, through the efforts of Representative Kose, passed the Legislamic and received the sanction of the Governor. lioB Itov. Sabbatu School Convention. The Cam bria County Sabbath School Association met in convention at tho First Congregational church in this place, on Tuesday, May Uth, at 2 o'clock, p.m. A very large number ol dele gates from the Sa;jr;aih Schools of Johnstown, Millville, Co.iejiaugli, Summerhill, Wilmore, and other places in the south of the county, arrived ou the noun train, uud were at once taken in charge by committees composed of ths different SaLbath Schools of Ebensbutg. Nearly ail the schools of the county were rep resented. The following gentlemen were elected dicers for the ensuing year: President, W. W. Vv alters, M. D., Johnstown; Vice Pres ident, X. J. lloier:s, Kboiisburg; Secretary, J. C. Caldwell, M. D., Johnstown; Cor Sec'y, liev. A. C. John ion, Johnstown; Treasurer, G. A. ivinkead, Ebensburg. A great many questions relating to Sabbath Schools were oiscussed in the afternoon ses sion, and ut 5 p. ni convention adjourned until 7 p. m At the hour of 7 o'clock, the church was lull. to overflow! ig. Rev. Fiuk , of Johnstown, gave some very interesting exercises on the blackboard, and fpleadid singing by the child ren, as well as by a cnoir composed of vo'uu teers from the several Protestant church choirs in town.was rendered w kh pleasing effect. Sev eral qnestions were also disous-ed. and at 1) p. m., adjourned to meet in Wilmore at the next annual session, the time for yvhith will be made known at the proper season. A Fcbstaxtiai. FarsKNT. AVe'jo not knew whether it is owing to our pood looks, our ge nial disposition or our proieibial mode;y- with all of which good qua lues we are ot course abundantly blessed, but certain it 18 that we number mong our friends some of tho most generous 'gentlemen this side of sundown a tact not uufrequently manifested to our great profit and pleasure. The latest indication ot this interest in our behalt reached us a few days ago in the 6hape of a keg of lake herring aud three splendid corn brooms, the gift f '-r good friend, Mr. James Connor, wholesale grocer, No. -355 Liberty street, Pittsburgh Mr. Conaor, with whom wo helJ business in tercourse for several year in the days of "lang syne," is a gentleman whom to know is to es teem, and il the Smoky Cilv member among its business men one person more deserving than another ot the m st unlimited success, that man in our opinion is Mr. James Connor Wo speak whereof we know when we say that he is the right kind of a man to tie to hon orable, prompt, reliable and liberal aud if country merchants aud others making pur chases in Pittsburgh will but give him an order, our word for it they will be tempted to con tinue their patronage as long a3 he is in a po sition to supply them and they are dosirous of being supplied, for there is no deception in either Mr. C. or his wares. A Singular and Shocking Accidf.nt. Wm. Quinten, an old German reside.it of Biacklick township, and a turner by occupation, had his skull fractured in a somewhat singular man ner on Thursday afternoon last, ar.d his ii juries, it is feared, will prove fatal. He was engaged at the time in gumming a ww at tho turning lathe, when the horse which operates the latho became frightened at something and set the machine in such rapid motion that it caused the emory stone be was using to 11 y in pieces, one of which flew up and 6truck him on the forehead with such force as to crush in the skull and inflict injuries from which it is not likely he can recover. Dr. Evans, of this place, wag sent for and rendered medical assist ance, but does not look for favorable results. Mr. Q.. who is over fifty years of age, is a man of family, and was a faithful soldier in tho late rebellion. Diato of a Prikst Rev. Johu O. G. Scan Ian, pastor of the Mansfield congregation, died very suddenly of apoplexy at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, on Tuesday last, and his mortal ra mains were ou Thurslay placed in a vault at St. Mary's cemetery. A tolemn mass of requiem was celebrated at St. Paul's Cathedral by Rt. Rev. M. Domenec, who also preached a very impressive and affecting funeral oration on the occasion. In the sanctuary, assisting at the lut sad iites to a greatly beloved priet, were Rt. Rev. Bishop Shanahan.of Harris burg, besides upwards of forty priests, a9 well as the Rev. professors and students of St. Mi cbael'tt Seminary. The attendance of the laity was also very large, and the funeral altogether was of the mosii mousing and soirow-express-ing character. Requiescat in pace. Another of those knock down arguments, or rather a series of them, for which our town has of late become somewhat notorious, had its occurrence on the Diamond ou Tuesday night lust. Two of the combatants, at least, came out of the contest with their phizs very badly demoralized, and one of the victors, for the first time probably, discovered that he could "hoe his own row" in any emergency, and of couise feels greatly rejoiced thereat. Ko ar rests were made. Tuesday, May 30th, will be the day for decorating the graves of the Union soldiers, and although we know nothing positively as to the programme iu this place, we deem it fair to presume that this beautiful and appropriate ceremony will be attended to on even a more elaborate seals tbu it was last year. COHKVKK'ATION. SuMMEimrLt, Twp., May 9, MTf. 1'nrEND MAPThe Wilmore man Vho wants to make out that he is a JSluek woman, fisrurcd Bifain last week in tho Frerman.- Wishing to no wittjvand having no wit himself, he borrowed a little from an Irishman, but Irish wit, coming1 from the lips of Mr. Majra-ie, loses its effect.-and mny be compared to a golden thread run thro H. hempen sack. Mr. Maifp-ie completely lesos sfpht. of his sub ject, lie boian by defeinlSnpr Miss l'.lack's course as a tfacber in the uut-lic school, and now he is enjrajred ubusintr Catholics and their Church. Ibis may gratify his own desires, but will not prove what he undertook to defend, or convince anybody that ho himself has a sound mind. Let mc now brinjj him back to the subject in dispute, by putting to him thrco )ucstions, which cmbracu the matter of our controversy and should beanswered before any other point is introduced : I. llid Miss lilack meddle with :-o'irio:i in the public school? bhedid. Contrary to their own wishes, and in. opposition to their parents, she annoyed tho scholars with her prayr-rs, mid in vited tin; Lutheran preacher of Wilmore to hold religious exercifos in tho school, and the Kv. trenilemitii readily complied. Tho preach er Told tne this himself. II. Had Miss liiack, us a teacher in the com mon schools, a right to do these things? I hold that she had not. Jews and Gentiles, sis well as ull denominations of Christians, art; taxed for the common schools, and ail should havcc-ouul rights and privileged in them. No sect should daieto introduce its tmet.-into them, much less attempt to force its doctrines ou the chil dren of the rest of the community. If tho le liKion of one sect be allowed to be practiced iu the publio schools, nil other denominations Jews as well as Christians aro justified in de manding aud insisting upon t he same privileges for their respective creeds. Grant this general permission and you will have a nice time of it. That Miss lilac k was wrontr is, I Ihiak, unques tionably, and instead of allowing anybody to undertake to defend her course, she should npoloi.e to the parents whose rights she iuva ded, and to this community, which she has dis till bed by her conduct. III. Is Miss liiack the author of the commu nications tnat appeared in the Freeman over her name? S-he is not. I have already shown, in the columns of the Freeman, that she does not compose litem, and I will do no more now than reler the reader to Miss Black's owu let ter, published in your paper of March :15th. Any one that reads that epistle will not only con clude that Miss Bluek has not tho ability to write, but will also admit that it was a shame to ontfajre the services for years of Mich a teacher in a public school. Our people have been im posed upon, and the result is that their children hae learned but little, although teachers have been pai l to instruct them. 1 hope Mr. Ma.srjfie will attend to the main question hereafter, and either show that 1 am w roller, or else uckuowlcdire that he is in error himself. To abuse my religion aud nil Catho lics is no if. -ply lo me. and ttie public are not so ehalluw-uiiudcd us net to see into the matter. He nuiy bo Miicero in what he says about us, but, as his statements are false, we must regard Mr. Majitric as either ignorant or vicious. N e know our religion, and only laugh at his stu pidity or pity his malice when he represents it to us under faise colors. The calumnies lie urges have been ofteu urged before, and are plagiarisms as far us he is concerned. 1 will now brieily pursue Mr. 31aggie in order to take notice of some of his assertions, l.u therauisui, he says, had its foundation in Christ. This I do no! believe aud 1 will tell him why. Christ established one religion, and that existed iu every age sincj it was established, and will continue to exist to the end of lime. Lulheran ism, however, was never heard of before the fifteenth century. It is clear, therefore, that Christ is not its founder. There was never a Lutheran preacher before I.u liter. No nation, no people, no individaal ever professed it dur ing the first fourteen hundred and more years of Christianity. Such is certainly mv convic tion, aud 1 am satisfied that Mr. Mairgie cauuot show me that I am wrong. Martin'Luther, an apostate monk, whose morals were extremely bud, was really and truly thu father of Luther otiism, and it is but proper that a religion founded by him should be called after him, as a child is named after its parent. God forbid that 1 should die iu buch a religion! Luther gained some of the petty princes of Germany over to the new-fangled creed, uot becau.-e he convinced them i f its truth, but by tho promise of temporal gam. Just listen t Schiller, a Gorman Protestant, and, 1 think, also a Lutheran : "The ri i pundVr o mmuMie irtstiltdiiifi.i inttdr the A'; fui iiuil inn athactive in the w. of prince." The same sc h:licr also de clares that "tlie L.uthtrnna uvrc yree'Ju for Vie l)ro1ierlu " ('ttthfliex." Lutiu-rauistu also employed the sword to prop:i;r.tte its tenets. Luther himself was an avowed advocate of persecution, as tiny one who ever read his writings is fully aware of. "Wij do v. l licti u.iu'thi.e," " sj-s, "uwf iut ijire ui'ti' till it bailie nur In: laid in tiuir hljudl" Aud, addressing his disciples, or rather urging them to persecute, he says: "A fmifj a Ifiere trill rent a drop of IjOhI in jour reim punnie an u ild heat anil aniunte iil;e uolvex tiire mier ttilc ptaiHint." Now, Mr. Maggie, did Luther unism ever persecute? You should not have introduced tho puhjcrt of persecution, for '"those who live in gla.-v houses should not throw stones." Why, sir,.yoor sf?ct, just springing in to life, not only persecuted the Catholics whr-re-ever strong enough to do so, but likewise other Protectants denominations that refused to be lieve in Lutheranism. Listen again to Schiller: " LiUheranr, far fnun crineir.'j a. tuleraiit pirit toward iiotuna 'Cutholiex, ;'. .". it wan in !lu ir jiower, cren fl) trcni the. CrJeiniytn." The fact is that Lutheranism drenched Germany in blood and if my opponent is ignorant of tho fact, it only proves tttat his curly education was fadly neirlected. Perhaps the poor man had the mis fortune to be placed in l.is youth under the tu- til life of a tf-acher like Miss Maggies ISlack. The tes ti irony I produce to substantiate facts is Protectant, and on bat account has special weiarht. I could also show the would-be femal", on similar aut hority, t hat Lut heraid n Is a fail ure and b-c trays signs of weakness in f very part, nnd that the Catholic Church U full of lite and youthful vi.jror, and is.Vstined to set- tho cn.i of Lutheranism, as she saw its commencement. In conclusion, I would say to Mr. M:urgie, that raiher thaucxiiose himself further, or longer persist in making his protege- a subject of laugh ter, ha should inform the public through the press that bis cau-e is bail nnd unablo to be de fended with any show of decency. Should li3 not follow this advice, we will see who will have reason to regret it. Now is the time for him to make known to the public that ho is u man. and not a woman. Let him lay tiside the mask of hypocrisy, never again to as -ume it , and let him speak with the spirit of a man und iu the lan guage of a gentleman, und his: imprudent course heretofore will be forgiven and forgotten.! Soltkho. Our accomplished photographic friend, Mr. T. T. Spence. detdres us to say that he has about five hundred "negatives'' which were t kcn by him duringthe years 13h8 '9,and will furnish persons da-iring any of these "nega tives" at the lateol 25 cents each, or will sup ply photographs printed from them at the low price of six for one dollar. None of these old "negatives" will he kept longer than the first of June so now is the time to call at Spence's Photograph Gallery, opposite tho Post Office. Hay and Miss Annie, daughter of Conrad Suppes, Esq., all of that place. Tho matrimonial disease seems to be raging among the stove und tinware men at both ends of the Hue. It was only last week that we chron icled the taking off of an Altoona friend of that persuasion, aim now we aro called upon to re cord tho matrimonial alliance, of one who holds an ci jo.-: !ly prominent position in our good will and highest esteem, llad we the timeand space we would take pleasure in spreading ourst-if on John's wedding, for it id not often we have the opportunity to congratulate such a genial, puii tfhiuy, cheery and big-hearted young benedict on ei happy un event ; yet we feel that we could say nothing that would add to his felicit3-at the present moment for we are sure that heis brim ful and running over with all those joyful sen sations peculiar to one who has just hegnn to revel in the blissful delights of double-breasted happiness. John aud his accomplished young bride enjoy in an eminent degree the respect and esteem of all w ho know them, and if they live for an hundred years in the full enjoyment of all theblessings which attend those who arc properly matched in the matrimonial hurness, it will bo nothing mere than what hosts of car nest friend wish them with all their hearts. Miss Annie has indeed "made Hay while the sun shone," and if she has secured, as we know she has, a husband well worthy of any woman's purest love aud liHe-loug devotion, we are equally confident that "His house she enters, there to be a light Shining within, when all without is night ; A guardian angel o'er his life presiding. Doubling his pleasures aud his cares dividing." OJUTl'AKY. EVANS. Tiod. in thifi borough, on Friday. 5th instant. David II. Lva.ns, aged 'M years, 7 months aud HO days.
