A story c imos from a vi!l n tJermany that the historic " Wandering Jev" Las been seen in that neighborhood, lie is re porled as liAvms; passed rapidly through the market place, and as having on the outskirts of the village addresi-ed a few words to some children, who, bolder than the ir companions, had followed in his path. lie wa dressed in worn and diuu'V antique garments, carried a loig s'aff, and with his profuse beard ftreamin in the winJ, presented tuch an awe-inspiriei appearance that the terrified villagers fl 1 fr.ni him in fright. When he paused and p..ke t. the children, he told them to go bac': lad inform the people that a new ruler had arisen in Europe who would bring Belgium, Holland and other c-uiirics under hia sway that many ktranae vicissi tudes would be witnessed, and that many proud heads would be brought low. On being questioned as to his name, he replied, "Seek not to know. I have been here be fore in the past I shall be here again in the future. Uutil the cud of time shall I walk the earth unceasingly." The apparition, then waving its hand, turned from ths chil dren and resumed its pk-dding walk, disap psaring in the distance. The report nf this appearance of the "Wandering Jew" has caused a very great excitement among the believers in the le gend, and the truth of the story is credited throughout Belgium. The legend of the Jew who had witnessed the crucifixhn, and had been condemned to live and wander over the earth until the time of Christ's sec ond coming, originated in the middle as. and cau be traced back to the chronicle of the Abbey of St. Albans, which was copied and continued by Malhew Paris. This chron icle relates that io 12128 a certain Archbishop of Armenia Maj r came to England on a visit to sacred places, and while enj ying the hos pitalities of St. Albans, among other ttrauge stories, related that there was a man Joseph lived in Armenia, who had witnessed the crucifixion. This man, originally called Ca taphilus. was a porter ;in Pilate's service-, and when Jesus was passing out from the Judgment Hall, imptouslv struck him on the back, saying, '"Go quicker ; why do you j loiter?" Jesus looked b.ick ou him witii a severe countenance, and said, "I am goii'g. j but you will wait till I return." And ac- j cordiugly Cataphilus is still waiting his re- turn. After Christ's death he v;u converted and baptised, and his name was then chang- '; ed to Joseph. Ju 1S42 the Wandering Jew j appeared at II imburg, tel'.iug a story similar j to the abo7e. lie, however, said that his j name was Ahasuerus, and that Le was a thoemaker who struck Jesus on the back j while on the way to CJolgotha. This par- j ticular person is described as a tall man, 1 with long hair hanging down to his shoul- i dors, barefooted, and wearing a strange cos- ' tume, consisting of sailoi's trouseis, a gown hanging to the knees, and a long mantle flowing to his faet. lie spi.ke go id Herman, in the Saxon dialect. 1 1 1575 the Wander ing Jew appeared in the Netherlands, and at this time used tho Spani.-h language. A few years later tho Wandering Jew ap peared at Stiasburg, and going bc-f re the magistrates, informed them that he had vis ited the city just two hundred years bef re, which statement, it is asserted, was proved to be true, by a refer nee to s'.ine town re cords. He next was heard of iu the West Indies, and again in Franco, where, in 1CG4, he caused considerable j-ensetiein, in his pres ence being accompanied by destructive hur ricanes. On April 2o. 1774, an individual claiming to be the Wandering Jew appeared in Brussels, and toM his story to the com mon people ; he, however, had change! the popular name of this character, and called himself Isaac Lnquedem. This legend has formed the- subject of numerous popular bal lads in the d.lf-rcnt hmguagts of Europe, and alpo of poems, tales and novels, by dis tinguished authors. It miy here be said, that this curious myth seems to have origi nated in that passage of the Gospel cf St. John, twenty first chapter and twenty-second verse, where Jesus says of Jnlm, "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow the V mo. Then went this baying abroad mining the brethren that that disciple should not die." St" RE CfUK fou Corns.
