A Hard Winter Impending. With- J
out claiming to be especially weather- wise I
uurielvef, although we have fome views j
of our own on I he subject of the seasons, i
d. duced from observation, experience und j
study, we cannot hot attach pufficient
credit to the signs nnd tokens which old
banter and woodmen on this continent,
imd scientific calculate in Europe are
ndducing Hif sustain the prediction that
we are to huve nn early nod severe win
ter throughout the Northern Homis; here.
The Renvois nnd prairie dops in the
West und Northwest of America, along
with many other animals that' house them
flves tiwtiy in the cold season, have
ireHtly advanced their preparations for the
frost this jear, and on the Atlantic const
the Storm Iving send ua no equivocal or
frqoent warning.
In Europe, no less important an organ
of learned opinion than the Hul!tin of the
Scientific Society anno-ince? that the wiu
tvr ot" 1SG8 and 1870 will be exception
ally severe on the Eaicrn Hemisphere.
It rem'uds its reader" of the fact that the
winter of 18C8 and 18G9 whs very re
icarkuLlo for its mihines?. The three
most moderate preceding winters of the
century had been those of 1822, 1823 and
IS34.
M. riehon, writing to the bulletin above
mentrnd, tells the world that since the
atmospheric pert ubcrnf ions of 1859 CO.
the years have been warmer, clearer and
dryer, and the barometer pressure lighter
than before. The anotcnlies, he thinks,
cannot fitil to find their compensation ere
long, the winter before hist closely corres
ponding wiili that of 1823, and every
thing betolening that about 1870 we
hall Iihvo a great winter like that of
1H2D 30.
To those whose business consists in the
tale of all forts of winter wear and se
portable raateiia', this is no unwelcome
news ; especially when comtort and plenty
nlready fill their homes but to the poor
it is ahwmii). Fuel, clothinp, bread and
all, they apprehend, will be dearer, and
work harder to get.
The i'iii.ihU are not invariably right,
but there is accumulated evidence in their
favor to !iow that on general indications,
fand careful comparisons kept up for years
pnt-t, tl.ey can make some fair predictions
concerning the year to come. At all
events, thrift and wise precaution never
d any harm, and should the phenominal
Iy severe seasons thus predicted ensue, our
friends may not blame us for havinc piven
them thin hint in good time. A. Y. JJ-r-cunt

A WoNDKRFL'I. Stohy. It is faid thut
in tombs of the Necropolis of ancient
Egypt two kinds of mumujies have been
found. One is incomplete that is to say,
all orpuns necessary to life have been sej
nrated from them ; the other, on the con
trary, is quite complete, llavir.p ob
served this, a Swedish chemist, Dr. Grus
selbach, who has the leputatit n of beirg
both preat and learned, l ro feasor at the
University of UpsaJ, has come to the con
clusion that the Egyptian mummies are
not all, as has been sai I and believed for
some thousands of years, bodies embalm
ed by any process of preservation whatev
er ; but they are really the bodies of indi
viduals whose life has been momentarily
suspended, with ihe intention of restoring
theiu at some future time, only the secret
of preservation has been lost. Professor
Grusetlbach adduces many proofs in sup
port of his idea ; among others, his cspir
lments durinp the last ten years, which he
says, have always proved successful. lie

allowed it to fall, it w, u'.d have broken
into fragments. In this state he kept i:
tor several years, and then restored it to
life by sprinkling it with n stimulating
Moid, the con. position of which is his se-c-et.
For fiiteen years the snake has
been undergoing an existence composed of
successive deaths and resurrections, ap-
jaenily without sustaining any harm
The Professor is leported to have sent a
petition lohis Government, requesting tuat
a criminal who has been condemned to
death may be piven him to treat in the
same manner as the snake, promising to
retore him to life in two years. Ii is un
