    fit. Peter's Carelessness.
One night, as old St. Peter slept,
He left the door of heaven ajar,
"When through a little angel crept.
And came down with a falling etar.
One Bummer as tho blessed teams
Of morn approached, my blushing brido
Awakened from somo pleasing dreams,
And found that angel by her tide.
God graDt but Jhia I auk no more :
That when ho leaves this world of sin,
He'll wing his way to that blest phore
And find that gate of heaven again.
BT. PETEB'S REPLY.
Full eighteen hundred years or more
I've kept my doors reenrely tied :
There has do "little angel" strayed.
Hot one been rrisbing from inside.
I did not sleep, as yon supposed,
Nor left the door of Heaven ajar;
Nor has a "little angel" left.
And 2one down with a falling star.
Go ask that blushing bride and see
If ah woa't frankly own and say
That when ub found that angel babe.
She fouad it in the good old way.
God grant but this I ask no more.
Thai should your number you enlarge,
That yoa will not do as before,
, And lay U to old liter's charge.
EsTAOCrSAKT Musical MECnASIEM-
A beautiful ok was constructed by M.
Droy, aa Ingenious mechanic of Geneva, iu
Switzerland, capable of the following sur
pribing movements. There were seen on it
a negro, a dog, and a thepherd. When the
block struck, the tbepheid played six tones
on Hi flute; and tLe dig as if delighted with
the music, jumped up ami fawned upon bin:.
This musical machine was exhibited to tho
king of Spain who was greatly struck with
Its wonderful powers.
"The playful gentleness of my dog," raid
Droy, ia his loast merit; if your "majesty
will be pleased to touch one of the apples
which aro in tho shepherd's basket, and
you will admire his fidelity."
Tho king took an apple, and tho dog
In a musical tono barkeJ so loud, that the
kind's dog began also to bark 8
Ingonious as this machine undoubtedly
was, it haa been fully equalled by Maclzel,
well remembered for his extraordinary skill
in nautical mechanics particularly. Not
many years since, in 1809 or 1S10, he ex
hibited a masterpiece of art. From a tent
Mr. Maelzel led out a fine, manly martial
figure, in tho unifoim of an Austiian dra
goon trumpeter, with his instrument to his
mouth. Tho figure being pressed on the
shoulder, played not only the Austrain cav
alry march, and the .different signals for the
manoeuvres of the army, but also a march
and an allegro, which was accompanied by
the whole orchestra. After this, tho dress
of the figure was completely changed into
that of a Faench trumpeter of the guard. It
then began to play the French cavaliy
march, with the signals for cavalry ma
cccuvreft, and a lastly march of Dussck's
and an allegro of Pleyd, also accompanied
by a fuU orchestra.
This fjure produced a clear and perfect
tone, and only required to bo wound up
twice during the programme, and this was
effected on the left hip. This very curious
figure was exhibited in various cities in the
United States, aud probably etill remember
ed by many.
First Use of Gunpowder. Dr. ner
mann Meynert, In his work entitled "History
of the Art of War and Organization of
Armies In Europe," shows that gunpowder
was known to the Arabs long before the
time of Berthold Schwartz. About 1285,
Nedjm-Edin-Hassan-Alammah describes a
pyrotechnical mixture composed of saltpetre,
brimstone, and charcoal, which, he states,
was known both to his grandfather and
father; consequently, at least forty years
before the date of the manuscript. The hit
ter is illustrated with diagrams of the madfan,
a sort of wooden mortar, as wide as it was
deep, into which the mixture was rammed,
for the purpose of projecting balls (Londoc)
Oi bol'a. 'Let tin (shooter be on his guard ! "
adds the writer. The madfaa was provided
with a handle, and miut, therefore, have
been a portable weapon. Among Alam
m ah's recipes there is the following : "Take
ten drachms of saltpetre, two drachms of
charcoal, one and a half of sulphur. Mako
these up into a fine powder, with which fill
one third of the madtaa; put no more, for
otherwise It might burst." The word bon
doc Originally meant a hazlenut ; in the tenth
century it had already acquired the meaning
of a ball to be shot from a crossbow, and it
now means a musket or pistol ball. Another
contrivance mentioned by Alimmah is an
iron lance, or arrow, with a hole drilled
lengthwise in the shaft, and filled with gun
powder. The first mention of this Mihstaure
in the Chiiuse ancalj occurs in 12o'J. under
the Song dynasty. Alberlus Magnus and
F.oger liacdi (1280-1205) seem not to have
beeu aware of the pr-j-ctilo power of gun
powder, but only cf its explosive quality.
A Small Pox I'Ikukdv. A correspondent
of the Stockton (California) A red J, writes
as follows :
I herewith append a recc'pt which has
been used to my kuowledgo in hundreds of
cases. It v. ill prevent or euro tho small
pox, though the pittings are filled. When
Jenncr discovered eow-pox iu England, the
world or scienco hurled an avalanche of fame
upon his head ; but when the most scientific
school of medicine iu tho world that of
Paris publishes this receipt as a panacea
for small-pox, it past unheeded. It is as
unfailing aa fate, and conquers in every in
stance. It is harmless when taken by a
well person. It will also cure scarlet fever.
Here is the receipt as I have used it, and
cured my childreu cf scarlet fever ; here it
is as I have used it to cure the srnall-pox ;
when learned physicians said tho patient
must die. It cured :
Sulphate of zinc, one grain; foxglove
(digitalis), one grain; half teaspconful of
Bugar ; mix wun two tauesnooafu s of water
"When thoroughly mixed, add four ounces of
water, lake a spoonful of it every hour.
Either disease will disappear iu twelve
hour?. For a child, smaller doses according
to ago. If counties would compel their
physiciana l0 use this, there would be no
need of pest-houses. If you value advice
and experience, uso thU for that terrible dis
ease. Metallic ceilings, wWh consist In the
application to the joisting 0f Tery thin
stamped metal In ornamental embossed
panels, have recently been Invented. These
stamped panels are fitted for every kind of
decoration In color, and if Inserted as plain
surfaces, may bo Ubed as the ground for
every discription of cartoon painting, com
bining with lightness and durability artistic
and ornamental effect, at a comparatively
small cost.
