cluding Alaska, says a Washington cor
repondont of tb.3 Cincinnati (Sommrcialy
we own ic public hind nearly a billion
and a half of acre?- Including Alaska,
we own a billion and eight hundred mil
lions. Flair a million of acres of this hs6
been surveyed. At the rate we sold and
gave away land last year, two hundred
years will fea the State, like a profligate
heir, run through its wholo possessions.
In Florida we still poesess seventeen and
n half million of acres ; In Ohio only five
hundred acres unappropriated; in Missouri
nearly two million acres ; in Alabama
rcven million acres ; the same amount in
Louisiana ; in California one hundred and
hix millions of acres, so that that State
really owns only about one-eighth of her
self. Very few of the new States have
any land claim to State sovereignty.
Kansas, for example, belongs more than
half to the United Slates, and Mississippi,
when bho seceded, as now, owed one
eighth of hpr pnl to the United States.
A vast portion of country is the p 'operty
of nobody, but is the commonwealth of
our confederacy, while spotting its surface,
like sails at sea, are little tracts and ham
lots set a fide in obedience to some inter
national law, or by the good ptlicy of
beneficence.

At a parish meeting in one of the towns
In the interior of Pennsylvania, where a
liew meeting house had just been erected,
the question was agitated with respect t j
having a lightning rod nut up. Opinions
wore freely interchanged, und the project
seemed to meet with general favor, until
an influential and wealthy old German
thus let himself swing, giving utUr i:ue !o
a rather novel statement, one not in ac
cordance with the generally received opin- j
ion of the established laws of Jtature and
IVovidence :
"Now, gentlemen, I tells you vat I
tinks. I links we hash beens to much
troobl nnd expensh, and none has gin
tollurs more as I to build a church for te
J-ord, and next Sunday we gives it to him,
and if he will dounder down his own house
den I eavs let him dounder away I
gives no vote nor tnonish for douudering j
rod!"
This mult am inparvo speech proved a
settler of the question, the enterprise was
abandoned, the meeting was adjourned
sino die, and tho worthy parishoners har
monized beautifully over a glass of larger
at the village inn.
A I'UAve Iitisit Gmr.. Several women
were bathing at Nahant, lately, when one
was carried out by the sen beyond her
depth, nnu after screaming for assistance,
suddenly went down. One of her friends
close by, not knowing- the depth of the
water, went to try and save Iter, and she,
too, as quickly disappeared. A joung
woman residing in the family of Dr. Mif
tltn, at Nahant, n.med Hridgct Alary O'
Toole (her naroe is given, to her praise, in
full, for it is worthy of record), at a great
ri-ik, instantly swam out to them, and
after a hard struggle brought them into
shoal water havins her own bathir.2
dress almost torn from her, and being
twice drawn under tho water herself
Those who witnessed the scene at once
reported the facts to the Humauo Society,
and the girl is to be presented with a
medal for her heroism and humanity.

Soai. Get from a druggist a pint box
of concentrated lye for 40 cents. Empty
contents into a gallou of boiling water.
Let it have ten hours to dissolve. Then
empty it into a boiler, add another gallon
of water, and when the two gallons boil
pour in four pounds of liquid grease, stir
ring it well until thoroughly mixed. It
it simmer for four or fix hours, and half
nn hour before taking it off a gallon of hot
water may be addtfd. Two tablespoonfuls
of pulverized borax and four of rosin add
greatly to its detersive qualities ; but a
teacup full of salt must be thrown in.
When thought done, dip in a casi ferufr,
and if the mass drops clear, ropy and
chills quickly, it is soap. Empty into a
wash tub having the sides wet, and in a
few hours you will have twentyfive
pounds of hard white soap ready to be
cut for use.

An exchange says : It is convenient to
farmers and cruppers to have an easy and
correct rule by which to measure corn in
cribs. Here is otic: Having leveled the
corn in the crib, measure the length,
breadth, nnd depth, and multiply tbetn
together, and deduct from the product
one fifth ; and you have the number of
bushels in the ear. For shelled com take
ore Lalf of this. To Le strictly;correct,
add half a bui-htl fr every one hundred.
Farmers who are fond of cyphering can
test the correctness of this rule by taking
1,728 solid inches for a foot, and 2,159
inches in a bushel, and see that the latter
is nearly one-fifth larger t'uau the former.
Ccue Foit Ix-GnoAvrsG Nails. It is
fetated that cautcrizat ion by hot fallow is
an immediate cure for in-growing nails.
Put a small piece of tailow in a spoon,
and heat it over a lamp until it becomes
very hot, and drop two or three drops
between the nail and granulation. The
effect is almost magical. Pain and ten
derness are at once relieved, and in a few
days the granulations all go, leaving the
diseased parts dry, so as to admit of being
pared away without any inconvenience
The operation causes little if any pain, if
ine tallow is properly heated.
To Remove a Mote from the Etk.
-Take a horse hair and double it, leav
ing a loop. If the mote can be seen, lay
the loop over if, close the eye, and the
mole will come out when the bair is with
drawn. If the irritating object cannot be
een, raise the lid of the eye aa far as pos
sible, and place the loop na far in as you
can, close the eye and roll the ball around
a few times, then draw out the hair; the
substance which causes eo much pain will
La sure to come with it. This method is
practiced by ax makers and other workers
