Another Carbon Oil Fxplosion. A
Youny Lady Burned to Death. The most
shocking aud heart-reading accident, per
haps, that has ever transpired iu Ebensburg,
had its occurience at the residence of Mr.
Edward Humphreys, on Friday evening last,
and resu'ted in the terrible injury and subse
quent death of a youDg lady named Catha
line Davis, aged about twenty years. The
facts aa we have learned them are that Miss
Davis was in attendance upon her sister.
(Mrs. Humphreys,) who was confined to bed
by sickness, and by her was tequested, about
nine o'clock on the evening io question, to
go down stairs and bring her a drink of water.
The unfortunate girl started to comply. with
the request, taking with her a carbon oil
lantern, and while descending the stairs she
Doticed the flame ia the lantern blazing up
to an on usual height. Becoming alarmed,
she attempted to blow out the light, when
the oil became ignited and exploded in an
iustant, euveloping her in flames, which soon
communicated to her clothing, almost every
thread of which was burned frotn her person,
and herself injured beyond any hope of re
covery, before available aid repched her from
any quarter. There was no one about the
bouse, it arcms, able to render her any assist
ance, aud those of the neighbors who reach od
the scene first thoughtlessly attempted to
subdue the flames by drenching the unfortu
nate victem with water, which only rendered
the matter worse. Mis. Wm. Williams had
the presence of mind, however, to run from
her bouse with a quilt, which she succeeded
in rapping around the poor girl, after having
burned her own hands severely, and by this
means the flames were overcome not, how
ever, until internal and external injuries had
resulted which proved fatal about 9 o'clock
on the following nighl.tlie unfortunate young
lady having in the meantime borne the most
excruciating torrceuts which human mind
could conceive of.
The charred remains of the young victim
of this heart-rending catastrophe were ac
companied to their last earthly habitation
in the Union graveyard, on Monday, by an
immense throng of sympathizing people,
and while the greater portion of the females
in attendance gave vent to their feelings in
weeping and lamentations, the stouter heart
ed manifested by their subdued looks and
low sobbings that their hearts too pulsated
with pity and commisseratiou for the sad and
tragic fate of one so young, so buoyant and
so lull of bright anticipations for the future.
Ths Nkw DisciPLfcs Church. The new
church building erected bv the Christian
congregation, or Disciples of Christ, on Hih
street. :n this place, is now completed, and
was ( n last Friday evening, Hay 1st, opened
for the worship of Gi-d. The building is of
brick, is 66 feet long by 86 wide, having a
vestibule of 8 feet at the entrance, over
which is a gallery 8x36 feet, capable ol
seating about 60 persons ; height of ceiling,
'20 feet, and the whole house will comfrta
b!y seat about 300 persons. The eutire
cost, S4000. Cn Friday evening, a goodly
number of the members of the church and
others being assembled, a sermon was de
livered by Joseph King, of Allegheny city.
On Saturday evening, the congregation was
addrpsjed by George Loliugier, of Indiana
county.
Lord's day morning: The house this
morning was thoroughly filled, and its con
gregation aain addressed by Joseph King,
after which, the dedicatory prayer was of
fered by James Darsie, of Somerset. A
hymn was then sung, and after n lew re
marks by Jame6 Darsie in reference to the
debt remaining n the building, a collectiou
was taken up, amounting to $37 ; aud af
ter wards, pledges were given by the mem
bers of the church which amounted to SoTO,
making the whole sum contributed $067.
Duriug the wefck thus fas, other sums have
been given, amounting to between $100 and
S200. Fo that the lemainiug indebtedness
is small but about $200.
At 3 p. m., the house was pgiin com
pletely filled, and a sermon preached by
James Darsie and again at 7J o'clock in
the evening, when the congregation was ad
dressed by Joseph King.
There will be preaching in this church
every evening this week ; also next Lord's
Day. morning and eveniog, and the public
are cordially invited.
A sermon was delivered last evening
(Tuesday) by Joseph King, of Allegheny,
to young men, on "Nobility of Character."
Anotheh Candidath toh Pi-blio Pat
honage. It is a fact patent to mot of our
citizens that Mr. M. L. Oatmai has taken
the store-room recently occupied by J. A.
Maguire & Co., into which he haa this week
introduced a well selected and varied stock
of dry goods, groceries, notions, confection
eries., tobacco, cigars, etc , and as this means
business, be has made up his mind to 6ell
all hisgoods at prices which cannot fail to
tempt the buying public to give him a call
when in quest of bargains. We need not
attempt to enumerate the many articles
comprised in Mr. Oatn an's vtock. but ad
vise all our friends to look in on him and
see if he baa not got many things which
they ueed, and then determine from his pri
ces whether money cannot be saved in deal
ing with him. Mr. Oatman designs making
a specialty of the sale of the justly celebra
ted Metropolitan Oil, and when it is fully
introduced, we have no doubt that it will
be used by every family in this community.
It can be furnished at a much less price than
carbon oil, produces a more brilliant light,
and is stiictly non-explosive. In view of
the recent shocking accideut in our midst,
the latter fact alone will beyond doubt com
mend the new oil to general consideration.
Worth t of Cummendatkn. Our artist
friend up street. Mr. T. T. Spence, is cer
tainly worthy of special commendation for
the aitistic and perfect style in which he ex

his Gallery bear testimony to his proficiency
as an artist, and evince the fact that he is
fully as competent to render satitfaction in
his art aa auy photographer in the country.
Very few people cau resist the temptation
of "seeing themselves as others see them,"
and when the temptation comes on them we
advise them to consult Mr. Spence. His
work is excellent and his prices low. He
baa recently taken a negative of the altar in
the Catholic church of this place, as it ap
peared most tastefully and beautifully deco
rated for the Easter festival, and is prepared
to furnish copies at one dollar each.

stated.
