    ExcRLLExr Whitewash. A corres
pondent Pc'nJj us the following, with the
remark that she has found it to be excel
lent and the bst ever tried. Fho wishes
the readers of the llejrah to have the
benefit of it
Aa the huuso cleaning time will soon be
here, it niay nut be wmiss to pay a few
wordd in regard to whitewashing. There
are many recipes published, but we believe
the following to bo the best that can be
used : White chalk is the best substitute
for lime as a wash A very line and
I. ri limit whitewash pivparati-n of chalk is
called "Paris White." This we buy at
the paint stores fur three cent? a pound,
retail. For each sixteen pounds of Paris
White we pr.-cure half a pound of
white transparent glue, costing twenty
live cents (!if;y cents a pound). The six
teen pounds of l;ris White is about as
much as a p-rSon will use in a'day. It is
pvp:;r.'d a follows : The pine is coven d
w'.th c 1 1 water at n ght anl in the mrr -ing
is carefully heated, without scorching,
until dissolved. The Paris White Is
stirred in with hot water enough to pive
it the propt r milky cor.fi ton ry for apply
ing to the wall?, and the dissolved glue
is then added and thoroughly mixed. It
i thi applied with a bush like the com
man lime whitewash. Except on dark
and srnoky walls and ceilings a single
coat is f-uifici.-nf. It is nearly equal "in
brilliancy to "zinc white," a far more ex
pensive article. Gcrmantoicn TJpgrapli.
A Vi j-v heavy fog once visited the
State of Massachusetts, which probably
somewhat surpassed the famous fops of
London. A young man was sent out into
h field to nail on a few courses of shingles
up n a barn, the roof of which was near
ly completed. At dinner time, continues
the farmer-, who is responsible for the story,
the fellow came up, and pays he : '-That's
i;u alarming long barn of yours."
".Not very Ions," savs I.
Well," says he, "I've been to work
all this forenoon, and haven't got one
coursa laid yet."
'If that's the case," says I, "you're a
very lazy fellow."
So, after dinner, I went out to see what
he had been about, and I'll be thundered
it he had not shinghd more than a hun
dred feet right out into the fW.
In a Western village a charming, well
preserved widow had been courted and
won by a physician. She has children :
among them a crippled boy, who had been
pelted, and, if not spoiled, certainly ;d'ow
ed very great "freedom in debate." The
wedding day w;.s approaching,, and it
was time the children should know they
were to have a new father. Calling the
crippled boy, sd,e said : -'George,, I am
c:i:i to do something before long that I
would like to talk about with you."
"Wei!, mi, what is it ?"
"I am intending to marry Dr. Jones
in a fiwdays, and in a few days, and "
"P.ully for you, ma ! Does Dr. Jones
know it !''
Ma caught her breath, but failed to ar
ticulate a reponse.
