The ttkgp hotel that is known by the !
nuE'i "i'Ange Garden," on the route
itoiu Laon to Son-sons, balaaan LaiTau
and Charignon, was- formerly an obscure
hovel called t e Set le, (wllow,) whose is- I
olated situation made it a lit place for the
perpetrations of crimes.
In 1700 this tavern was purchased by
one Mr. (Jalland, the owner of the farm ;
of Vauxrain. He caused the old build- i
inp to be torn down, and the present one
10 be erected on the ?ame site. Hut in j
pulling down the tavern and digging the j
foundations lor the new one what was the
surprise of the new proprietor to find a
great number of dead bodies buried undvr
the soil of the court, under the barn and
cellar, some of which nppeared to have
been buried at no very distant period.
Unfortunately, the supposed author of
the supposed assassinations Lad been dead
homo yean, and the earth covered alike
the criminal and his victims.
Mr. (Jutland sought for all the informa
tion which could he likely to solve the
mysteiy of this horrible affair. Jlclow
are a couple of facts which he has made
known to many of his friends. He says :
"I hud lived iu the new house about
five years when a peddler one day entered
and asked it wine was sold there as for
merly. Afterwards he inquired if the
landlord was still a'iv. Upon replying
that lie died tare years before 1 had bought
the place, he said to me
"I fear nothing now ; I can with safe
ty relate to you the horrible deed I wit
nessed here ten years ago. Having come
to this place iu the evening fur a lodging,
the master said to KM ;I have only one
hay lofi to offer you, as the beds iu the
house are ah full.' I was too tired to go
farther, and 1 accepted. After I had
gone up in the hay loft, I heard them take
away t ho ladder by which I had ascend
ed. This seemed very strange, and made
me feel so uneasy that I could not close
my eyes to sleep all night. Towards
midnight, J. heard plaintive and stifled
groans in the court ; I threw off the hay
witti wlneu 1 bad covered myselt when I
lay down, and approached the badly joint
ed window of my confinement, and per
ceived distinctly through the cracks, by
the light of a caudle placed near the en
trance of the lower door, the tavern keep
er and his son murdering a traveler, who
begged nmst piteondy for mercy, offering
them all he possessed, to spare his life.
Soon the light disappeared and I could
hear nothing more. The tortures I expo
rieoced were horrible. I expected every
moment that my time would come next
to be massacred. At length day dawned,
nnd the ladder was put back in its place ;
1 descended and paid my hill, went away
and said nothing about the robber's den.
This is the first time I have ever told
what I Saw that horrible night."
"Hut," aaid I to him, "why did you
not make a declaration as you passed
through SoilBOni V
"Oh, I could not do it very well, as
my time was limited , I was obliged to be
back in the country at a certain time, and
if I had made a declaration, it would have
detained me perhaps a month or two."
To this fact, Mr. Caliand adds the fol
lowing, the circumBtances of which he
relates thus :
"One day a person from a neighboring
town Came to me and said :
"Did you know that he of whom you
bought the tavern was a very wicked
man ? You recollect that the little gar
den behind the house w.13 enclosed by a
hedge ; a beggar from the community of
L , eras one day resting himself in
the shade of 'his hedge, the thickness of
which prevented him from being soen by
the father and son, who were weeding in
the garden. They worked for some time
without speaking, when the son suddenly i
br ko silence au i said to his father
"To-morrow, you know that I depart.
1 thail go away from this country, and
never return."
you always atraij, then, of see
ing ghosts f asked the old man.
"I can no longer endure this life that
we lead and I have not the courage to as
sist you in assassinating poor travelers
who beg of you in vain for merer. "
"Very well, you are free then," replied
the father.
Here the conversation ended, but the
next morning it was reported that the son
of this bad man had died suddenly in the
night. The father had poisoned him for
fear that in an excess of dread or remorse,
be might betray him. In regard to the
father, he died in his den, without h-.'in
dislurbed."
For destroying the sad souvenirs at
tached to this place, Mr. Callar.d gave it
the name of the "Guardian Angel," in
the place of the "S;.ule," which it for
ruerly bore, and wbich it received in 1050
from a 1'iedm jntesc, who driven from his
country for his crimes took refuge in this
isolated place, covered with willows and
brambles. This outcast built a cabin of
branch- s and mud hy the side of the road,
and begun BBS kind of life, which was
continued by his successor, until the old
building was pulled down an 1 the
hotel erected.
