Clearfield township, ot the Loopf as well

And while the "stumpage" of a 6inglbcre
is worth aa much to the owner, in many .m.
ses, as fifty acrea were ten years ajo, h an.
swers tho additional end of preparing for
tlie plough eome of the finest land in Cam
bria county. This portion of the county de
rives its immigrants mainly from Clearfield
and Blair counties, .with a few industrious
New Eiifclandars ; while Chest and Susque
hanna are like avenues to wealth, and have
become the homes of many Clearfield lum
berers, as well as Indianians.
But Chest and Carroll townships, and es
peciallj' the latter, are increasing, perhaps,
more permanent!!, as well as more rapidly,
than any other country portion of the coun
ty. This is owing to the fact that tho Ger
man farmers, by whom these townships
have been mainly Eettled, and who are still
seeking homc3 there, do not desire more land
than they can cultivate. Ilenco they buy
small firms, and cultivate thoroughly every
acre they purchase. This portion of the
county is receiving almost faily accessions
to its population from Germany, from St.
Mary's, from Eastern and Western Pennsyl
vania indesd from every point of the com
pass. More recently this class of settlers has
been overflowing its original boundary, and
extending into Cambria and Blacklick town
ships, southward, Susquehanna, northward
and eastward to Clearfield and Allegheny.
Yherever they settle the neighborhood bears
unmistakeable marks of good husbandry.
The universal Yankeo nation never will
be still. Thty jnay bs likened to a flock of
pigeons in a buckwheat finid those behind
constantly rising, fluttering over the heads
of those more advanced, and settling down
beyond, to be again left in the rear in their
turn. Bni Cambria county has Buffered less
from Western emigration than any of her
Bisters, and whenever the vicissitudes of
business, or the whim of a discontented
mind, takes a Cambrian from uf, his place
is sure to be tiled before it grow eoIJ.

LOCAL tORRESPOSDCXC'L.
Joh??9towc, Jak. 13, 1868.
D:t7r Freanan After the exciting scenes
which marked the exit of the old and the
entrance of the new year, our town has set
tled down to the dull routine of every day
life, and now that the festivities peculiar to
the dividing line between the decrepit past
and tho elastic present are over, we h.ve
time to retrospect or build air caatle for the
future.
"The year has gone,
And with it many a glorious throDg
Of heppy dreams ! It's mark is on eaoh
brow
It's shadow in each heart-"
Aad though many of us may have little
cause to remember it kindly, yet we must
still remember that it has left us upon the
stage of life, buoyant and hopeful, while in
the storm and darkness of a cold December
midnight it laid its weary burden down and
passed from earth forever. Another leaf is
added to the rausty scroll of the past, and in
bold, clear characters is impiinted on the
title page of the present 1863. Our re
cord for the past is indelibly written in the
books just closed, whether of good or of evil
God and our consciences host know, but for
tho future, time and our actions will deter
mine what shall be entered on the pages of
the year of grace now with s.
Your correspondent is compelled to apol
ogise to his friends this week for a brief and
uninteresting letter, owing to the fact that for
6everal days past he has been confined to

can only promise to make ample amends
in the future.
In conclusion, S. B. wishes t perform a
debt of gratitude heretofore neglected.
which is, to tender his thanks to Mr. James
Murphy ,'of the renowned Star Hall Clothing
Store in this place, for a valuable present
received on Christmas morning. Mr. M.

VEGETABLE SICILIAN
HAIR
I TS EFFECT IS BXIRCULOUS !
It 16 a perfect and wonderful article.
Cures baldness. Makes hair grow. A bet
ter dressing than any "oil" or "pomatum,"
Softens brash, dry and wiry hair into Beau
tiful Silken Tresses. But, above all, the
great wonder is tho rapidity with which it
restores GRAY HAIR TO ITS ORIGINAL
COLOR.
The whitest and worst looking hair re
sumes its youthful beauty by its use. It
does not dye the hair, but strikes at the root
and fills it with new life and coloring matter.
The first application will do good ; you
will see tho natural color returning every
day, and BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, the
old, gray, discolored appearance of the hair
will be gone, giving place to lustrous, shining
and beautiful locks.
Ask for Hall's Sicilian Hair Ronewer ; no
other article is at all like it in effect.
See that each bottle has our private Gov
ernment Stamp over the top of the bottle.
Ail others are imitations.

Fibis Cambbia Towkship. On Sunday
-morning last the dwelling house of Recso S.
Lloyd, Esq.. situated iu Cambria township,
about one mile from thl3 place, was, with a
portion of its contents, entirely destroyed by
fire. The family were at breakfast, and Mr.
Lloyd, .chancing to look out at the window,
discovered an unusual umount of sniokc dri
ving past, and on going out found the flames
bursting from the roof. Deeming it useless
to attempt to save the building, the family
and a namber of persons who were early at
tracted to the'spot, turned their attention to
the removal of the furniture, and although
they succeeded in getting out the principal
portion of the goods, we learn that Mr. L.'a
loss in personal property alone will not fall
much short of 4500. The fire originated
through a defect in the chimney, which was
built of stone. The house was a comforta
ble but not a very Taluablo structure, being
built ef logs and weather-boarded. Wo have
heard no estimate made of its value, but of
course tho misfortune Evolves much more
than the mere loss of the property destroyed.
There was no insurance.
This calamity is another verification of
the old adage that "misfortunes never come
singly." It Is not a month since we chron
icled the fast that Mr. Lloyd had sustained a
severe fracture cf one of his arms, and just
the night before the fire a valuable horse be
longing to him was kicked very severely on
one of its shoulders by another animal. Mr.
L. certainly deserves to be commisBerated
iu the midst of such an accumulation of misfortunes.
Mabble Wgkks. Mr. Ottiuger Reed, a
competent and experienced worker in mars
ble, has taken the room adjoining Williams'
tin store, until now ocupied by Mr John
Parke, and proposes to locate himself per
manently among us, provided ho can get
work enough to justify him in so doing.
We recommend hm to a liberal patronage.

over an otners wnerever Kuown. A poor
time-piece of the machine make will be as
rare ia the future as a crood one of hand
make has been heretofore, for machinery is
arbitrary in its performance, and can make
a perfect article just as easy as one that is
worthless. It will be a cause cf congratula
tion if this highly useful American Enter
prise shall have the effect of driving out of
market the thousands of trashy foreign arti
cles miscalled time-keepers, by furnishing so
excellent and economical a substitute."
N. Y. Timts.
"We have had one of the works of this
Company in a case for some considerable
time, and comparing them with former first-
class works of different manufacture posses
sed by us, they have established in our opin
ion their superiority over any ever introdus
ced for correctness as time pieces." The
World.
"We notice with regret ( writing of the
Pari3 Exposition) the absence of specimens
of American manufacture, which although
only comparatively of reeent birth among
us, is already prodacing results of the most
cattafactory character. The watches manu
factured by the Waltham Company Are cer
tainly, so far as strength, durability, and
excellence as timekeepers are concerned, as
gpou as anything produced by the French or
Swiss manufactures." N. Y. Hmrald.
'The beauty, the preclaoin, the greater
cheapness, the uniform excellence of a watch
constructed by machinery co exquisite that
the mere spectacle of Its operation Is poetic,

public preference which will not be deceiv
