Vali k of Cons Cous. A friend who
had read an nrticle in fime paper recom
mending corn cobs, ground or unground,
r.s jm excellent and valuable feed for 8tock,
indertook to left tbe trutb of the gt-teuieni
for himself. He had a Hi-Re quantity on
hand, and after providing himself with the
proper vest-el, (n half hogshead tub,) he
idled it with cob, and then" ad ted a
Kilution of salt in water. In tbp3 steep
tho cobs were suffered to remain till they
Jiad imbibed a sufficiency of the fluid to
mate them soft. In this condition they
were (hen f.d out to the stock, at tho rate
i.-f halfa peck to a full-grown cow or ox,
i;j the morning and the Fame at mV.it.
He remarked that all his animals wero
extremely fond of cobs; that they con
f umed a much less epiantity of grain and
hay than before he commenced giving them
this feed ; neither did they require salt in
ita natural t-tato. lie has also ground
several bushels of cob., and finds the
moal an excellent artieh for making mush.
I have used corn and cab meal, ground
with and without oaU, for horse?, the last
twtlve or fourteen years, and I think it
nn excellent feed. Ii keeps a hoite locsa
in his bowel?, his hair lies smooth, and
make a great improvement in his looks.
I also used the meal with wheat or oat
chaif, to feed horses. When I first came
to live in the neighborhood, I was ridiculed
by the neighbors, who Fnid my horses
would nl! die before spring; but when
eprirg came, they were fatter, ami in far
belter condition than theirs. I found that
they took my advice after this, and fed
the same as myself, making a great saving
in feed. American Agrtxu'luralnt.
Wood Ashks ion Manuke. We re
commend the farmer carefully to save for
va in tl;c spring all the ashes lie can col
lect from the home consumption of fuel
during the winter; and, where he has op
portunity to procure from other sources a
supply, leaded or unlcached, of this valua
ble fertilizer. If people knew from ex
perience the worth of this simple manure,
there would be no ashes wasted, neither
would there be any to soil, except by those
who have no soils to improve or no crops
to raise. To retain all their virtue, it is
highly important that ashes should be
kept dry, for water will dissolve a large
proportion of the most valuable salts ; jet
even leached ashes need not be thrown
iiway as of no account ; for though far
inferior in fertilizing qualities to ulneached
ashes, they are by no means useless. One
very important result of the employment
of this manure in tha growth of cereals is
the increased strength acd luxuriance of
Ftraw thereby promoted a result due to
the presence of silicates, on which so much
of the straw depend. 0:her ingredie nts,
essential to both straw and grain, a:e

Ashes arc valuable also for promoting the
growth of grass; and -Professor Lie-big

A PowEiirix Fertilizer. Every far

Uiis agent for evil is one of the most val

u-flct it to remain a standing menace to
Ufo-pnd property, when it can etB'ly be
rioaoved and turned to good account in the
csrden and field. Twelve quarts of soot
u a hogshead of .water will muk a pow

the grow th of flowers, gardan vegetables
er root crops. In cither a liquid or solid
e'.ate it makes an excellent top-dressing
for grass or cereal crops.

Is a recipe for making ginger beer, a very
wholesome ar.d refreshing drink, more
healehy and far better than whisky : Put
two pall? ns of cold water into a pot upon
a fire 4 add two ounces ef good ginger,
bruiced, and two pounds of sugar. Let it
come to a boil and continue "boiling for
half an hour'. ' Then skim the liquor, and
pi ur it into a jar or tub, along with one
shced lemon and half an ounce of cream
tartar. When nearly cold, put in a cup
lid of yeast to cause the mixture to ferment.
The beer is now made, end after it has,
worked two eiiys, strain and bottle for
use. Tic down the corks firmly.

formation that by procuring any of the
gums that exude from the peach, phim or
cherry trees, and which is found to exist

pardon or orchard, and dissolving it in
water will furnish as good mucilage as can

To Deaden the Sound of an Anvn.
If a chain about cn? foot long, formed
(-fa few largo links, i su?pendVd to the
mall end of an anvil, it destroys that
thrilling and deafening noise produced
by striking on it with the hammer; the
vibrations of the anvil are extended to the
chain, which absorbs them without pro
ducing any sound. This is good advice,
?r which anybody who has a blacksmith
cr worse yet, h coppersmith for a neighbor,
will be duly thankful.
A correspondent of the Maine Fanner,
says : "Many a housewife may be glad to
kuow when sho has a piece of fresh meat
she wishes to keep a few days, that it can
be successfully done by placing it in a
dish and covering it with milk. Sour
milk or buttermilk will do as well. I
have practiced tho plan for years."
