UErCxIHED XEtVS ITE7I,
Tt intimated that the head of the
Radical tariff business, Congressman Mor
rill, has come back from Europe a free
trader. Two St. Louis Radical war preachers
lately went to see the Black Crook, (to get
a good text, of course,) but they acted so
strangely that the polica arrested them.
. A barrel of new cider in a state of
fermentation exploded in a store in Pari,
111., tho other day, knocking one man eight
or ten feet, bursting the barrel into frag
ments, and scattering the contents in every
. direction.
A new feature is about to bo intro
duced in New York journalism. It is to
be a critique of all the clergymen of any
note in the metropolis. Their matter and
manner are to be as coldly and impartially
judged as they would be were they actors.
A terrapin was found in Chesterfield
County, Va-, a faw days ago, with the
incription "1775 V. W." upon his shell,
After submitting to a rigid inspection from
liia finder, the venerable animal walked
away with the slow step of age, the spec
tators perfectly satisfied of the date.
-Three years ago a little girl, five years
old, in Fall River, Ma.-s., pushed a button
up her nose, where it remained, and has
fincj been a constant source of pain. On
Tuesday nighf, after annoying the girl
three years, the button came cut of her
nostril, greatly to the relief of the girl arid
her parents, who had doubted about its be
ing then?.
A Richmond paper speaks of a girl
thirteen ycrs old who committed fifteen
hundred consecutive verses of the Jsew
Testament in one week, wearied out sev
eral teachers in reciting her lesson, and
had brain fever next day. The Hartford
Times says that a girl of sixteen is dying in
that city from the effects of a disease
caused by over study at school. And the
Uoston Traveller notices the case of a
young lady who recently died in a subur
ban town, and her physician says that her
death was undoubtedly caused by hard
sludy.
A hotel keeper at Lancaster, Pa.,
recently learned something in this wise :
Two countrymen took lodgings at his
place, and fared sumptuously, drioking
three bottles of wine daily. The last
day, and before they had settled their bill,
a dispute arose about the speed of their
horses. They at last settled upon a race,
and appointed the landlord judge. When
they were ready, the judge, like those of
the Olympian games, gave the word one,
two, three, and go. Away they went,
nnd have neither been seen or heard of
fincc.
TALVADLB RECIPES.
A SrEcinc. The medical profession
lire generally severe on specifics, yet some
times recommend them. The London
Scalpel, the highest medical authoiity in
the world, gives the following as an infal
lible cure for small pox and scarlet fever:
Sulphate of zinc, one grain ; foxglove
digitalis), one grain ; half a teaspoonful of
water. Take a spoonful every hour.
Either disease will disappear in twelve
hours. For a child smaller doses, accord
ins to age. It is stated that if countries
will compel their doctors to use this there
would be no need of pest houses.
' To Extekminate Rats. We find the
following going the ropnds of oar exchan
ges : "Take a bunch of matches and soak
them over night in a teacupful of water ;
then take out the matches and thicken
tho water with Indian meal to a thick
douh, adding a 6poonful of sugar and a
little lard. Lay about the premises where
the rats are and nothing else will get it.
It is decidedly the best exterminator
known." Giv9 it a trial.
Remedy for Ear-ache. My wife wai
once suffering intenso pain from ear-ache
caused by a tumor infide, and after our
remedies all failed to give relief I called
in a neighbor, who poured vinegar upon a
hot brick, and with a funnel conducted
the steam into the ear. Relief was quick
and permanent.
A Remedy foh Toothache. One
drachm of alum reduced to an impalpable
powder, three drachms of nitrous spirit or
ether ; mix, and apply to the tooth on
cotton.
