r.Ir. Pepper is a very shrewd lawyer.
I -examining a witness he exhibits a tact
" generally enables him to secure a tri-
!ipU fur truth, lie unco in a while,
; ever, meets with a uecr customer.
S;,( l! fi no turned up on Tuesday last.
A Mr. Doyle wan complained of for keep
ing i-.n ni:pnpcr house. The complainant
ri-nd Mr. Pepper (o manage the case.
The iir-t witness who testified was Cornc-lin-i
ONeil. Wc give his examination :
"Do you know the defendant, Doyle?"
"Divil the man better."
"'Vhnt U:ivl vl a house does he keep?"
'Brick house."
"I don't mean that. What arc its pe
culiarities ?"
"Two stories, with a back kitchen,
which joins onto Sheridan's fence."
'You still misunderstand me. I wish
to know the reputation of his house is it
good or bad ?"
"Had intircly."
Mr. Pepper called the attention of the
Court to tins answer, and desired the Jus
tice to make u note. The Justice did k.
'What do you mean, Mr. OhNeil,
when you tay the reputation of the house
is bad t"
"That it has the divil's own chimney,
and a roof that lakes like a sieve."
"You still misunderstand me, Mr. O'
Neil. Let me try again. What kind of
people visit lLat houe V
"Men and women, principally. At
least that's the only kind J ever met there."
"Well, what kind of women are they?"
'Female women, as near as I could
judge."
"Well, what do you know of their char
acters ?"
"Only one of them has got the article."
"The Court will please note that only
one of tho females has got a character.
And who is that woman ?"
"A young lady by the name of AIc
Shnne." ".She, you think, has a character?"
"Think ? 1 know it. I saw it on
Monday."
".Saw what ?'.' '
"Her character. It was written by
Mr. Davis, the gentleman she has lived
with four years coming next Tuesday fort
night." "You still persist in misunderstanding
me. Let me try once more. Have you
ever seen women of the town at Doyle's?"
"No, sir, not of the town, but a divil
av a rait from the country."
"By women of the town, Mr. O'Neil,
I mean common women prostitutes."
"What is that ? '
"Prostitutes have you ever seen pros
titutes drunk and darn ing at Dojle's?"
"Ah ! inu.-ha, listen to that ; an i3 ft
the likes o' Doyle that would allow pros
titutes to misuse his shop ? liy the pow
ers of Cromwell, if his boy Mick was here
but he'd twist your nose till you could use
itfor a girublet. Prostitute! Go way

that Mr. Pepper told him that ho could
stand asid and make room for the next
, witness. The cast resulted in a verdict of
acquittal.
A cnxTUCMAN visiting the family of a
worthy deacon in a neighboring town, had
been showing the children, one evening, a
beautiful musical box, after which he
wound up and put the instrument in his
pocket. At the hour of retiring for the
night, the visitor was called upon for a
prayer, and having got upon his knees,
was in the midst of what promised to be a
fomewhat prolonged petition, when sud
denly in consequence of a changed of po
sition on the part of the suppliant, the
musical .box started gayly otf with the
tune, "lake vour firno. lr;a T.m I

1 o say that the prayer was brought to a
rather ubrubt termination, and that even
the worthy deacon rose from his knees all
but convulsed with laughter, is drawing
the effect of the incident quite mildly.
