1 TIic nccummendallon of Mrs,
Surratt lo Mercy.
The Washington correspondent of the
Nov York rwiM writes :
' 1'bc recommendation for mercy for Mrs.
Surratt, made by some of the members of
the military Commission which tried the
HhfciUisination conspirators, lias at last been
unearthed, and rends as follows :
"The undersigned, members of the Mil-
' itary Commission detailed to try Mary E.
Surratt and others for the conspiracy and
the murder of Abraham Lincoln, late
IVeeideat of the Lnited folates, ecc, res
pectfully pray the President, in consider
ation of thj sex and age of Mary E. Sur
ratt, if hi on, upon all the facts in the
case, find it consistent with his fense of
duty to the country, to commute the sen
tence of death which the Court have been
constrained to pronounce to imprisonment
in the Penitentiary for life. Respectfully

The recommendation was drawn up by
Hon. John A. Bingham, Judge Advocate,
and the following members of the Court
refused to ficn it : Gens. Lew. Wallace,
A. P. Howe and T. M. Ilarria, and Col.

Judge Pierrepont, in his address to the

J tho age and tcx of Mrs. Surratt, it might
possibly be ripht to change Lor sentence to
, imprisonment for life, the President feigned
V the warrant for her death with the paper

commencement of the trial of John II.
Surratt. He then denied, ii3 ho now de-

The Washington correspondent of the

It is understood that Mr. Johnson un
equivocally denies that the papers and

One of the wot whimsical and unheard

which her huiband had brought from

poured the gunpowder upon the plate and
; put the cannon ball on top of the powder.
.Having thus got her artillery into position
, and everything in readiness, she then set

burning taper in one hand fired the pow

lxnatined. The exploding powder burned
and blackened the woman's lower extremi-
