LATE NEWS ITEMS.
Japanese Tummy has been made a
captain in the Japanese army, and intends
another visit to this country.
' Lightning struck the Court House i
of Orange county, Va., on the night of
tha 2d inst, setting it on fire and destroy
ing it and five other buildings.
The silver chalice of fct. Michael
Church, Charleston, S. C, has been res-
cued from a pawnbroker's shop in New i
York and restored to the church.
Prentice says 'tis a pity that elections
in the South cannot take place at this time,
for although the negroes there are strong
Bow they will be stronger in the dog days.
Mrs. Hannah Armstrong, residing in
the lower part of the city of Philadelphia,
committed suicide by taking laudanum
Friday night. She said her domestic
troubles were more than she could bear.
Two boys who were standing in a
harvest field about four miles from Litch
field, 111., were struck by lightning during
a storm on the 3d, and instantly killed.
A house in Gillespie was struck during
the same storm, and one boy killed.
.A man named McCarthy, in Balti
more, took a girl named Ruth Langford
out riding in a buggy, Friday afternoon,
and, when a few miles from the city, the
pair got into a quarrel, when McCarthy
drew a pistol and shot Ruth, killing her
instantly. The murderer was arrested.
Mrs. Swisshelm says there is a little
"sculptress" at Washington who "is as
lavish in the dispUy f her own bust as
that of her Congressmen patrons." This
must be the same fascinating creature who
got an appropriation of 1 5,000 from the
Rump for doing up the "late lamented" in
marble.
A few days ago a gentleman went
into a saloon in Boston, and upon calling
for some strawberries, observed a man
near him eating some with his fingers.
"Don't you furnish your customers with
poons r asked the astonished stranger of
the proprietor. 4tOh yes, sir," said he,
"but that is General Butler at that table!"
The following is said to be a eure
cure for neuralgia : Take two large table
tpoons full of cologne, two tablespoonsful
of fine salt, and mix them together in a
mall bottle ; every time you have any
acute affection of the nerve or neuralgia
simply breathe the fumes in your nose
from the bottle, and you will be immedi
ately relieved.
Among the novelties abroad is a
small steamer, made of steel, as thin as
card board, to be used by the exploring
party in search of Dr. Livingstone. The
boat is thirty feet in length, and from
gunwale to gunwale eight feetMin breadth,
the weight being rather more than one ton.
The boat can bo taken to pieces in a very
short time, and taken across the country
by negroes.
The following hints are seasonable,
and may be true ; they are at least worth
trying : Oil of pennyroyal will keep mus
quitoes out of a room, if scattered about
in small quantities. Roaches are exter
minated by scattering a bandfull of fresh
cucumber parings about the bouse. No
fly will light on the window which has
been washed with water in which a little
garlic has been boiled.
A terrible riot occurred last Friday
week, at a circus, at Marietta. It seems
that a quarrel took place between a show
man and a citizen, when the former shot
the latter through the head, killing him.
A general fight then ensued, when a citizen
truck the above showman on his head
with the butt of the piece, killing him.
At the same time the gun was discharged,
the bullet passiug through the heart of the
man in whose hands it was.
A man in Brooklyn having reason to
suspect tbat his wife was criminally inti
mate with a male friend, bored some holes
in the ceiling of her apartment, and,
stationing himself in the room above, arm
ed with a bottle of vitriol, awaited the
course of events. He saw conclusive
evidence of guilt, and used the vitriol with
euch terrible effect that both eyes of the
woman were destroyed, and her visitor
was burned so badly tbat he could not be
removed from the house.
A convict named Dewitt Clinton
Schoil, undergoing a sentence at the New
Jersey State prison, a few days since re
ceived a letter containing the highly im
portant and satisfactory information, that
by the death of bis great grandmother be
had fallen heir to a fortune of thirty thous
and dollars. His comrades and others in
prison warmly congratulated the lncky
camp, who seemed iwtensely elevated
with the idea of good fortune, although he
Las to serve five years longer in the prison
before be can enjoy it.
